Purpose: Detrimental effects of using non–patient-centered language (nPCL) have been reported for diabetes, mental illness, and obesity, and both the American Medical Association (AMA) and International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) recommend using patient-centered language in medical literature. Heart failure is a common yet stigmatized disease, and nPCL may further propagate stigma. This study analyzed current use of nPCL in journals focused on heart failure research and also examined whether the journals steer authors to adhere to AMA or ICMJE guidelines regarding nPCL.

Introduction

Serum levels of pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) and N-terminal (NT) proBNP are measured at admission to assess the likelihood of acutely decompensated heart failure (ADHF). Elevated NT-proBNP levels on initial presentation are a reliable marker of ADHF. However, the prognostic significance of NT-proBNP levels measured on admission remains unknown. With a better understanding of how admitting NT-proBNP levels impacts readmission rates, length of stay and mortality, future prospective studies with specific interventions can be developed to reduce all-cause readmissions, shorten length of stay and reduce mortality.

Isolated left ventricular noncompaction cardiomyopathy (LVNC) is a rare congenital condition occurring due to arrest of myocardial compaction in the first trimester, resulting in a thin layer of compacted epicardium and thick hypertrabeculated myocardium containing deep recesses. This article presents a 44-year-old female with progressive dyspnea, orthopnea, paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea, and pleuritic chest pain. Examination revealed elevated jugular venous distention, lower extremity edema, and bibasilar crackles on lung auscultation, while the electrocardiogram (EKG) exhibited left bundle branch block.
