Surgical site infection (SSI) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in operative patients worldwide. The American Society for Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) published the most recent clinical practice guidelines for antimicrobial prophylaxis in surgery. These guidelines are based upon the available evidence and provide a standardized approach for the safe and effective selection, dosing, and administration of antibiotics for the prevention of SSI (Bratzler et al., 2013).
