Pain is often a disabling symptom in Parkinson’s disease (PD), and is currently underassessed, underdiagnosed, and undertreated in this population of primarily older adults. Guided by the Rugh Model of Psychological Components of Pain, an exploration of the characteristics of pain experienced by individuals with PD, and the relationships among the emotional, cognitive, perceptual, and behavioral aspects of pain was undertaken. A convenience sample of 125 patients with PD reporting average daily pain as 2 or greater on the Brief Pain Inventory-Short Form, were recruited for a cross-sectional descriptive survey from two large urban movement disorder centers. Embryonic Stem Cell Derived Neural Precursor Grafts For Treatment Of Temporal Lobe Epilepsy, Janice R. Naegele

Temporal Lobe Epilepsy (TLE). For many TLE patients, there is an initial traumatic head injury that is the precipitating cause of epilepsy. Severe TLE can be associated with neuropathological changes, including hippocampal sclerosis, neurodegeneration in the dentate gyrus, and extensive reorganization of hippocampal circuits. Learning disabilities and psychiatric conditions may also occur in patients with severe TLE for whom conventional anti-epileptic drugs are ineffective. Novel treatments are needed to limit or repair neuronal damage, particularly to hippocampus and related limbic regions in severe TLE and to suppress temporal lobe seizures. Ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) are emitted by rodents and can signal either negative or positive affective states in social and nonsocial contexts. Our recent work has utilized selective breeding based upon the emission of 50 kHz USVs in response to standard cross species hand play—namely experimenters ‘tickling’ rats. Previous work has shown that high-tickle responsive animals (i.e., rats emitting abundant 50 kHz USVs) are gregarious and express enhanced positive emotional behaviors relative to animals exhibiting low 50 kHz USVs. This study examines the relation between the error-related negativity (ERN) and post-error behavior over time in healthy young adults (N = 61). Event-related brain potentials were collected during two sessions of an identical flanker task. Results indicated changes in ERN and post-error accuracy were related across task sessions, with more negative ERN associated with greater improvements in post-error Accuracy. This relationship was independent of any cross-sectional relationships between overall task performance, individual difference factors, including personality and self-efficacy, and indices of self-regulatory action monitoring. These results indicate that the relation between ERN and post-error accuracy remains intact and consistent regardless …
