Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Cigarette smoke contains high concentrations of oxidants and reactive oxygen species. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of long-term cigarette smoking on glutathione (GSH) levels in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid. Nineteen current cigarette smokers and seven healthy nonsmoking volunteers were included in the study. BAL was performed by infusion of five sequential 20 ml aliquots and each aliquot was immediately aspirated. The levels of GSH were determined in BAL fluids. The epithelial lining fluid volume was calculated by the ratio of urea concentration in BAL fluid to that in serum. Lower GSH levels were observed in …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Cardiac Troponin T (TnT) is a regulatory contractile protein not normally found in blood. Its detection in the circulation has been shown to be a sensitive and specific marker for myocardial cell damage. This study was designed to evaluate the diagnostic efficiency of TnT enzyme immunoassay in detecting myocardial damage in patients with stable angina pectoris undergoing visually successful percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) and to compare this newly developed test with the conventionally used cardiac enzyme tests. The study population consisted of 24 patients (3 females and 21 males) with a mean age of 55±9 years. Serial blood samples …

A Comparison Of The Effectiveness Of Sublinguallosartan, Sublingual Captopril And Sublingualnifedipine In Hypertensive Urgency, Yüksel Gökel, Sali̇m Satar, Sai̇me Paydaş

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The use of sublingual captopril and nifedipine has been indicated in hypertensive emergencies and in patients with essential hypertension, with the assumption that by this route, there would be a faster absorption and thus a more rapid effect on blood pressure (BP) than by the oral route. A comparative study of the effects of Losartan, angiotensin II receptor antagonist, captopril and nifedipine on blood pressure was carried out in patients with hypertensive urgency. Sixty patients with hypertensive urgency were subdivided into 3 groups of 20 patients each. The first group received sublingual captopril (25 mg), the second group received sublingual …

Recent few studies revealed that increased levels of oxygen free radicals might play a role in tissue damage. There are some studies in the literature proposing that increased levels of oxygen radicals might play a role in tissue damage, as also seen in Behçet's disease (BD). The aim of the present study was to measure plasma malondialde-hyde (MDA) (as an index of lipid peroxida-tion) levels in 23 patients with BD (13 men, 10 women with a mean age of 34.5 ± .2 years) both in active and in remission periods. Twenty-one healthy volunteers (11 men, 10 women) formed as the …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Regional odontodisplasia is a developmental anomaly of dental tissues with characteristic clinical, radiographic and histologic appearances. It most commonly affects the maxillary anterior teeth of both the primary and permanent dentition, and occurs in females twice as often as in males. The pathogenesis is unknown. A case of a twelve- year old female with regional odontodisplasia is presented. Although the affected teeth displayed the radiographical and clinical features of odontodisplasia, the patient appeared with significant soft tissue swelling on the anterior region of the mandible.

A Combined Variation Of The Arteries And The Nerve In A Leg, Zeli̇ha Kurtoğlu, M. Haluk Uluutku Jan 1999

A Combined Variation Of The Arteries And The Nerve In A Leg, Zeli̇ha Kurtoğlu, M. Haluk Uluutku

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

During the dissection of an amputed leg, we discovered a combined variation involving the branching of the popliteal artery and tibial nerve. The popliteal artery showed a trifurcation pattern, and one of its branches, the posterior tibial artery, was hypoplastic. In addition, a small branch arising from the tibial nerve in the upper part of the leg distally crossed the peroneal artery and contributed to the medial plantar nerve. In this article, such a case of embryonic origin is discussed, along with the clinical significance of these variations. The variant nerve and its relationship with the variant artery have not …
