BACKGROUND: Anesthesia providers use adhesive tape to secure advanced airway devices. Rolls of adhesive tape serve as reservoirs for pathogens. Rolls of tape do not have instructions on how they are to be reused, cannot be disinfected, and should not be repurposed. The re-use of rolls of tape poses a risk to patient safety.

Background: Overdose deaths have exceeded US war fatalities since WWII. Central Appalachia faces high substance use rates and poor health determinants. The opioid epidemic costs $740 billion annually. Providing 100 million chronic pain sufferers alternative pain control is efficacious, equitable, and reduces opioids. The author collaborated with a nurse-led mobile clinic in Central Appalachia to identify evidence-based non-opioid pain relief options for practice translation. In patients with hypovitaminosis D, the body will increase parathyroid hormone production to absorb calcium resulting in skeletal or muscular pain. Opioid pain medications are currently viewed as a standard part of pain control in the vast majority of surgical procedures. However, opioid pain medications can have harmful effects on patients leading to increased length of hospital stay, unplanned readmission, and contribution to relapse or development of opioid use disorder. An opportunity for improved practice of pain management lies within opioid alternative pain medications such as dexmedetomidine. Children born with spina bifida, a neural tube defect, can have associated loss of bowel control resulting in bowel incontinence. The National Patient Spina Bifida Registry found that 87% of those living with spina bifida had bowel incontinence, and less than 30% were bowel continent (Sawin et al., 2015; Wiener et al., 2017). Neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS) is related to opioid exposure in utero, and cases of NOWS have been increasing. In Tennessee in 2020, 824 newborns were born with NOWS. NOWS treatment involves pharmacological and nonpharmacological treatment. Breastfeeding, a nonpharmacological treatment, decreases the need and length for pharmacological treatment, the length of stay, and NOWS symptoms. Skin-to-skin may also reduce symptoms of NOWS.
