Dermatology Technique: Mohs Micrographic Surgery, Michelle J. Volis

Mako: NSU Undergraduate Student Journal

This paper aims to educate the readers about a novel surgery approach that is becoming popular among dermatologists. This technique, Mohs surgery, is implemented in order to treat malignant skin cancer types. This paper incorporates the history of Mohs micrographic surgery, the advantages and disadvantages of the procedure, and alternatives to this approach. The main advantage is healthy tissue preservation while disadvantages include holes in fragmented tissue margins and tissue orientation complications.

Efficacy Of Low Level Laser Therapy In The Treatment Of Postherpetic Neuralgia, Lili Legiawati, Marsha Bianti Dec 2018

Efficacy Of Low Level Laser Therapy In The Treatment Of Postherpetic Neuralgia, Lili Legiawati, Marsha Bianti

Journal of General - Procedural Dermatology & Venereology Indonesia

Background: Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is the most common complication of herpes zoster (HZ) and defined as pain that persists for more than 90 days after the onset of HZ rash. The chronic pain of PHN is debilitating and often associated with significant morbidity. It is a neuropathic pain and manifests as allodynia, hyperalgesia, or spontaneous pain. Although it is not considered to be life-threatening, sometime HZ is inadequately treated and may result in more severe PHN. Various treatment protocols for PHN are available; however, the result remains unsatisfactorily. The use of low level laser therapy (LLLT) in pain management …

Skin Cancer: Causes, Prevention, And Treatment, Lauren Queen Apr 2017

Skin Cancer: Causes, Prevention, And Treatment, Lauren Queen

Senior Honors Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the causes, prevention, and treatment of skin cancer. Skin cancers are defined as either malignant or benign cells that typically arise from excessive exposure to UV radiation. Arguably, skin cancer is a type of cancer that can most easily be prevented; prevention of skin cancer is relatively simple, but often ignored. An important aspect in discussing the epidemiology of skin cancer is understanding the treatments that are available, as well as the prevention methods that can be implemented in every day practice. It is estimated that one in five Americans will develop …

Treatment Options For Hidradenitis Suppurativa: Efficacy, Risks, Benefits, Katherine A. Hennager Jan 2017

Treatment Options For Hidradenitis Suppurativa: Efficacy, Risks, Benefits, Katherine A. Hennager

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Papers

Hidradenitis suppurativa is a chronic, recurrent follicular occlusion disease with painful, sometimes debilitating, cutaneous draining lesions and subcutaneous abscesses (DynaMed Plus, 2016). Hidradenitis suppurativa is understood to be a multifactorial disease that is hard to treat in some patients, especially those with a severe form of the disease. For this project, the efficacy of adalimumab for hidradenitis suppurativa was assessed and whether it is more beneficial than traditional treatments used. Adalimumab is a TNF-alpha inhibitor which belongs to the biologic DMARDs drug class. Kimball et al. (2012) found that at week 16 of their trial 3.9% of the placebo patients, …

Pulsed-Dye Laser Efficacy In The Treatment Of Psoriasis In Adult Patients: An Evidence-Based Case Report, Made Ananda Krisna, Hanny Nilasari Dec 2016

Pulsed-Dye Laser Efficacy In The Treatment Of Psoriasis In Adult Patients: An Evidence-Based Case Report, Made Ananda Krisna, Hanny Nilasari

Journal of General - Procedural Dermatology & Venereology Indonesia

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease known to be highly responsive to phototherapy. Narrow-band UVB (NBUVB) phototherapy has been one of the standard treatments for its moderate to severe form. However, its lack of efficacy in treating stable psoriatic plaques on extremities has lead researchers to find alternative treatments, one of which is pulsed-dye laser (PDL). Laser has been known to be effective in treating vascular lesions; in psoriasis, elongation of rete ridge along with tortuous dermal capillaries are one of the first pathologies identified early in the disease progression. Several in vivo and preliminary studies have found the …

Treatment Options For Skin And Soft Tissue Infections Caused By Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, Renee Weinberg Jan 2016

Treatment Options For Skin And Soft Tissue Infections Caused By Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, Renee Weinberg

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Staphylococcus aureus is a pathogen responsible for common skin infections, such as impetigo, cellulitis, folliculitis, and abscess and it is the most common cause for skin and soft tissue infections (SSTI). Humans are carriers of this microorganism and are responsible for facilitating its spread around the world. Over time it has developed resistance to multiple antibiotics, such as penicillin and methicillin, which has made S. aureus a persistent problem in the healthcare world today. Its methicillin resistance has given it the more commonly known name methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA). MRSA was initially discovered solely in the healthcare environment and thus …
