Journal of Mind and Medical Sciences

Nasopharyngeal hemorrhage is one of the most common ear, nose, and throat (ENT) emergencies that present in a hospital or primary care clinic. While many cases of hemorrhage are self-limiting, in more severe cases medical intervention is necessary, either to cauterize the bleeding vessel or to pack the nose with various materials (thus involving specialized medical care and time, which implicitly lead to additional costs). In the case of the packaging, the medical treatment can in some cases be extremely painful and unpleasant. Tranexamic acid is an affordable, inexpensive, easy-to-use antifibrinolytic agent and with no notable side effects, as demonstrated …

Assessing Post-Operative Complications In Pediatric Cochlear Implant Surgery, Nina Brahmbhatt, Andrew Stefan Md, Bianca Siegel Md Mar 2024

Assessing Post-Operative Complications In Pediatric Cochlear Implant Surgery, Nina Brahmbhatt, Andrew Stefan Md, Bianca Siegel Md

Medical Student Research Symposium

Cochlear implantation (CI) surgery is the standard of care treatment for pediatric patients diagnosed with severe-to-profound sensorineural hearing loss. There is compelling evidence that supports the use of CIs to improve hearing, language comprehension, and speech development significantly in children of all ages. While the operation is considered relatively safe, invasive procedures involving the skull can put patients at risk of adverse events.

This study aims to help pediatric otolaryngologists identify high risk patients and take preventative measures to ensure minimal complications.

The specific objectives include the following:

1) To determine the incidence of postoperative complications in pediatric patients undergoing …

Objectives: The Salivary Gland Committee of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery seeks to standardize terminology and technique for ultrasonograpy used in the evaluation and treatment of salivary gland disorders. Methods: Development of expert opinion obtained through interaction with international practitioners representing multiple specialties. This committee work includes a comprehensive literature review with presentation of case examples to propose a standardized protocol for the language used in ultrasound salivary gland assessment. Results: A multiple segment proposal is initiated with this focus on the submandibular gland. We provide a concise rationale for recommended descriptive language highlighted by a more …
