Cervical Cancer: Are There Ways To Reduce The Risks?, Madelyn Dorn Aug 2021

Cervical Cancer: Are There Ways To Reduce The Risks?, Madelyn Dorn

Symposium of Student Scholars

History has shown us that when caught early, cervical cancer is curable. Past research has found that the sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), herpes and human papillomavirus (HPV), have been associated with cervical cancer. In contrast, my dataset on 859 women has many more STDs and lifestyle choices compiled on 36 variables. The diagnoses in the dataset are many: cervical condylomatosis, vaginal condylomatosis, vulvo-perineral condylomatosis, syphilis, pelvic inflammatory disease, genital herpes, molluscum contagiosum, acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B, HPV, and cervical cancer. In addition to the demographic variable on age, there are many lifestyle choice …

Oral Minimal Model For Gestational Diabetes, Sarah Peters Aug 2021

Oral Minimal Model For Gestational Diabetes, Sarah Peters

Symposium of Student Scholars

Gestational diabetes is one of the most common issues that a pregnant woman encounters that could result in harm to both the woman and child. Due to this issue, the woman’s glucose and insulin levels should be carefully monitored throughout her pregnancy to assess the need for prescribed diabetic medication to help regulate those levels. In this research, the objectives is to develop a MATLAB computer program of the Oral Minimal Model, which is a model that can be used to estimate a person’s insulin sensitivity from an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) where plasma glucose and insulin levels are …

The Impact Of Exercise On Pregnant Women Aged 18-40 And Fetal Development, Jinisha Patwa May 2021

The Impact Of Exercise On Pregnant Women Aged 18-40 And Fetal Development, Jinisha Patwa

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

68% of those who performed minimum level exercise prior to pregnancy stopped completely during early pregnancy.

Women stop exercising during pregnancy due to worries about the impact it may have on the development of the fetus.

Starting moderate-intensity, weight-bearing exercise early in pregnancy increases placental growth rate and volume.

Exercise reduces the risks of excess gestational weight gain and high maternal body weight before pregnancy.

Physical exercise reduces the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus.

Ethnic Differences In Maternal Cytokines And Adipokines And Their Association With Spontaneous Preterm Delivery, Yelizavet D. Lomakova, Xinhua Chen May 2021

Ethnic Differences In Maternal Cytokines And Adipokines And Their Association With Spontaneous Preterm Delivery, Yelizavet D. Lomakova, Xinhua Chen

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Spontaneous preterm delivery (SPTD, birth at <37 weeks’ gestation) is a leading cause of infant mortality in the United States [1]. Infants born prematurely are more likely to suffer from both short and long-term complications including neurodevelopmental delay, visual and hearing impairment, and chronic diseases such as heart disease, hypertension and diabetes in later life [2-4]. African American women have a 2-fold increased risk of preterm delivery compared to Caucasian women [5].The reasons for this disparity are poorly understood. This limits the ability to predict and prevent preterm delivery in the most high-risk populations.

Assessment Of Factors Preventing Adequate Decline In Cervical Cancer Rates Amongst Minority Women In New Jersey, Rosie Wenrich, Jillian Baker May 2021

Assessment Of Factors Preventing Adequate Decline In Cervical Cancer Rates Amongst Minority Women In New Jersey, Rosie Wenrich, Jillian Baker

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Background

• Nationally declining cervical cancer rates are still high amongst minority women in NJ, with Hispanic women being affected the most.

• The Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection and can lead to cervical cancer

• Administration of the 9-valent HPV vaccine can prevent infection and progression to cancer

• Regular cervical cancer screenings allow for better outcomes

• Various barriers prevent people with a cervix receiving the vaccine

• Various barriers prevent people with a cervix aged >/= 30 from receiving regular cervical cancer screenings

Conclusions

  • Improved physician recommendation is required for the …

Retrospective Analysis Of Post-Operative Sepsis Rates, Stone Composition, And Ureteral Stent Duration After Ureteroscopy And Laser Lithotripsy During Covid-19, Young Son, Julia T. Scali, Ian Madison, Paul Chialastri, Thomas Mueller May 2021

Retrospective Analysis Of Post-Operative Sepsis Rates, Stone Composition, And Ureteral Stent Duration After Ureteroscopy And Laser Lithotripsy During Covid-19, Young Son, Julia T. Scali, Ian Madison, Paul Chialastri, Thomas Mueller

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy is routinely used to remove stones but results in manipulation of the genitourinary mucosa and has a well-established relationship with post-operative sepsis under certain conditions. Postoperative sepsis represents a significant morbidity and mortality cost to patients and the healthcare system. Several studies to determine risk factors for sepsis after ureteroscopy have been completed. Such risk factors include positive preoperative urine cultures, female gender, prolonged preoperative stent time > 1 month, and patients with sepsis at the time of initial stenting. To improve sepsis rates, procedural alterations such as the use of disposable ureteroscopes have been introduced, as …

022— Examining P27 Expression And Quiescence In Clobetasol-Exposed Umscv-4 Vulvar Cancer Cells, Nina Mustico, Vincent Scalcione, Jani E. Lewis Apr 2021

022— Examining P27 Expression And Quiescence In Clobetasol-Exposed Umscv-4 Vulvar Cancer Cells, Nina Mustico, Vincent Scalcione, Jani E. Lewis

GREAT Day Posters

Vulvar cancer is rare, mostly afflicting women aged 60 and older [1]. The cancer is often preceded by a common vulvar rash, lichen sclerosus, that is usually treated with the ultra-potent corticosteroid, clobetasol propionate. This treatment may, in turn, be associated with vulvar carcinogenesis. Our previous findings suggest that clobetasol is causing UMSCV-4 vulvar carcinoma cells to enter a state of quiescence. Quiescence is temporary removal from the cell cycle and can be thought of as a dormant state in which cells are not actively dividing [2]. There is growing evidence suggesting that quiescence may play a role in allowing …

Efficacy Of Anti-Mullerian Hormone In The Diagnosis Of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, Cassidy Prewitt Jan 2021

Efficacy Of Anti-Mullerian Hormone In The Diagnosis Of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, Cassidy Prewitt

Capstone Showcase

Introduction: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a complex condition that presents with a wide variety of symptoms. The PCOS diagnosis standard is the Rotterdam criteria, which includes hyperandrogenism, oligo-anovulation, and polycystic ovarian morphology (PCOM). Transvaginal ultrasounds have traditionally been used to evaluate PCOM, however, they are highly dependent on technician skill. This paper will evaluate research regarding the use of anti-Mullerian (AMH) in PCOS diagnosis as an alternative to transvaginal ultrasound.

Methods: A literature search was conducted using PubMed and Academic Search Ultimate in January 2020. A total of eight articles were selected based on relevance to the research topic …
