Background

The prevalence of childhood and adolescent obesity in the United States has steadily risen over the years and has become a public health concern. Obesity is defined as a BMI at or above the 95th percentile for children and teens of the same age and sex. Obese children and adolescents are at risk for poor health and poor quality of life. Furthermore, there are numerous comorbidities associated with childhood and adolescent obesity. While some of the associated diseases are acute, others can become chronic and result in lifelong conditions.

Childhood adversity is linked to poor cardiometabolic outcomes, but less is known about positive childhood factors. Using data from 4,007 members of the 1958 British Birth Cohort, we investigated whether children with greater psychological well-being had lower adulthood cardiometabolic risk. At age 11, participants wrote essays about their future. Two judges rated each essay for nine psychological well-being items (Finn’s r = .82–.91), which were combined into a standardized overall score (Cronbach’s α = .91). When participants reached age 45, nurses assessed their blood pressure, heart rate, lipids, glycosylated hemoglobin, fibrinogen, and C-reactive protein, which were standardized and summed for …

Background: Generalized pustular psoriasis (GPP) is characterized clinically by yellowish sterile pustules surrounded by erythema. GPP in children is very rare and may appear following steroid withdrawal in psoriasis vulgaris.
Case Illustration: A 14-year-old female presented to the emergency unit with generalized erythematous plaques and multiple pustules with lake of pus after abruptly stopped oral and topical corticosteroid for two weeks. The patient had used topical and oral corticosteroids for almost a year to treat psoriasis. Background: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common cutaneous malignancy. It usually arises in sun-exposed areas of the body, with the face and neck being the most common sites for BCC. BCC is typically found in older individuals, but it is becoming more prevalent in people younger than 50. However, such cases in children under 15 are rarely encountered. Pigmented BCC is a common presentation in people of color, while such presentation is relatively unusual in Caucasians. Introduction: Preterm birth (PTB) and socioeconomic status (SES) have both been associated previously with the onset of childhood asthma in high income countries. Yet, these factors have been studied minimally outside of an exposure or confounded relationship, and amongst the Canadian population.

Materials and Methods: Merging household interview data from Cycles 2 to 5 of the Canadian Health Measures Survey, this study analyzed data from weighted respondents in early (3-5 years, n = 1,096,609) and middle (6-11 years, n = 2,112,059) childhood. Bivariate, stepwise logistic regression, and logit decomposition were performed using STATA software. Intersectionality guided the study’s methodology.

Background/Objective: Advancing knowledge about energy balance (EB) is important for helping to reverse the obesity epidemic in many modern societies. This study examined adolescents' experience and perception of using an objective self-monitoring tool (SenseWear armband; SWA) and a portable diet journal to track EB for 7 days.
