Journal of Dentistry Indonesia

Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the correlation between ultrasonography (USG) and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and the accuracy between histopathological diagnosis and preliminary diagnosis in the diagnosis of periapical lesion. Methods: 20 patients with periapical lesion in the jaw, were included in the study. The presence of expansion or perforation and dimensions of the lesion were performed with CBCT. In the examination of the lesion with USG, shape, echogenicity, vascularization of the lesion and the presence of buccal expansion and perforation, were determined. Subsequently, a biopsy was taken from the lesion for histopathological examination and …

Stereomicroscopic Evaluation Of Dentinal Microcracks After Instrumentation Of Curved Canal With Rotary Files In Two Motions, Nupur Vasava, Shreya Modi, Chintan Joshi, Sweety Thumar, Anisha Parmar, Kruti Jadawala

Journal of Dentistry Indonesia

Objective: This study aimed to examine the effects of three distinct file systems with two motion types—rotary and reciprocation—on the development of dentinal microcracks after root canal preparation using a stereomicroscope. Methods: Sixty mandibular molars with a curvature of 30° were decoronated and divided into three groups (Vortex Blue, Mtwo, and ProTaper Next) and two subgroups (rotary and reciprocating motions). The samples were then instrumented with the files, dyed with 1% methylene blue dye, and sectioned horizontally at 3, 6, and 9 mm from the root apex. The dentinal microcracks were inspected using a stereomicroscope at 40× magnification. One-way analysis …

Clinical And Radiographic Features Of Nevoid Basal Cell Carcinoma Syndrome: A Case Report, G Subhas Babu, Devika S. Pillai, Shruthi Hegde, Padmaraj Hegde, Vidya Ajila

Journal of Dentistry Indonesia

Nevoid Basal Cell Carcinoma Syndrome, also called as Gorlin Gotz syndrome is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by the presence of multiple odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) of the jaw, basal cell carcinomas and skeletal anomalies. Presence of multiple OKCs is the first clinical manifestation in majority of the cases. Early diagnosis and treatment are of utmost importance in reducing the severity of this syndrome. We hereby report a rare case of Gorlin Goltz syndrome in a 28 years old female patient who presented with multiple cystic lesions in the jaws. Present case also highlights the clinical, radiographic and histopathologic features of …

Journal of Dentistry Indonesia

Objective: Root canal anatomy significantly impacts the working length determination. This study aimed to investigate the effect of the preflaring technique on the accuracy of four electronic apex locators. Methods: Forty-five single-canal central maxillary teeth were selected. The working length was measured before and after the coronal preparation by four types of electronic apex locators in the range of ±0.5 and ±1 mm matched for the apical constriction. The actual working length was calculated under a microscope. Data were analyzed using ICC and paired t-tests in SPSS16. A p < 0.05 was considered significant. Results: The accuracies of Root ZX, DTE, Denjoy, and Coxo apex …

Journal of Dentistry Indonesia

Introduction: The masseter and the anterior part of the temporalis are the muscles mainly responsible for the clenching function. Clenching patterns and the activity of these muscles are not expected to differ between male and females, nor between different occlusal classes. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine whether the activity index of the masseter and temporalis muscles is related to occlusal class and gender. Methods: This study involved 145 eighteen-year-old Caucasian volunteers who underwent surface electromyography. The sEMG was analyzed at the moment of 100% occlusal contact. Occlusal classes were determined used plaster casts. …

Effects Of Lime (Citrus Aurantifolia Swingle) Peel Extract Addition To Periodontal Dressing On The Number Of Blood Vessels In The Gingival Wound Healing Process, Malianawati Fauzia, Savira Pratista Oktaviana

Journal of Dentistry Indonesia

Background: Periodontal dressings that are currently available can only protect wounds from mechanical trauma, but have no ability to accelerate wound healing. Lime (Citrus aurantifolia Swingle) peel extract added to periodontal dressing contains flavonoids which can stimulate the formation of new blood vessels, thus accelerating the healing process. Objective: To determine the effects of adding lime (Citrus aurantifolia Swingle) peel extract to periodontal dressing on the number of blood vessels in the gingival wound healing process. Methods: 32 rabbits with 2 mm wound made on the gingiva were divided into 8 groups. For the control groups of …

Endodontic Management Of Mandibular First Molar With Four Roots - A Rare Case Report With Clinical Management Guidelines, Shaikh Shahbaz, Huma Iftekhar, Sharique Alam, Zehra Shavez

Journal of Dentistry Indonesia

Mandibular molar is usually two rooted with one mesial and one distal root. Additional roots are rare which requires accurate diagnosis and a methodical and scrupulous endodontic treatment. Objective: This paper aims to report the endodontic management of an unusual case of a mandibular permanent first molar with four roots (two mesial & two distal) and provide a clinical guideline to detect and manage these variant cases. Case report: A 15-year-old boy reported with a deep carious lesion in the lower left first molar (#36). The apical root contour of #36 on an intraoral periapical radiograph taken in different angulations …

Journal of Dentistry Indonesia

The success of orthodontic treatment depends upon the accurate assessment of mesiodistal widths of unerupted canines and premolars in mixed dentition stage. There are several methods available for mixed dentition analysis with dubious reliability in our population. Objective: To statistically develop new prediction equations for Pakistani subjects to predict the widths of unerupted upper canines and premolars (U345) and lower canine and premolars (L345) using mesiodistal widths of lower incisors (I1I2) and lower incisors and first molars (I1I2M1) and compare their performance with previously established methods of Moyers and Tanaka-Johnston. Methods: Study was conducted using the data from the dental …

Drug-influenced gingival enlargement (DIGE) among hypertensive patients is commonly associated with antihypertensive drugs such as calcium channel blockers (CCBs). Immune response alteration is one of the proposed mechanisms for DIGE. Immunoglobulin A (IgA) in saliva which involves in defense mechanism was shown to be affected in patients with DIGE. Objective: This study aimed to determine the association of salivary IgA level with DIGE. Methods: This cross-sectional study comprised 47 hypertensive patients who had consumed antihypertensive drugs for at least 3 months. Twenty-one (44.7%) males and 26 (55.3%) females had participated in this study. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 26.0. …

The Effect Of Crowding On The Accuracy Of 3d Printed Aligners, Tonya Spangler Jan 2022

The Effect Of Crowding On The Accuracy Of 3d Printed Aligners, Tonya Spangler

Theses and Dissertations

Purpose: To evaluate the accuracy of three-dimensionally (3D) printed aligners compared to conventional vacuum-formed thermoplastic aligners with varying levels of dental crowding.

Methods: Digital intraoral scans of 10 different cases were assigned to their respective groups (n=10, each, 30 total) as follows: no crowding (control), moderate crowding, and severe crowding. Using 3Shape software, digital aligner samples were created in standard tessellation language (STL) file format and randomly 3D printed. The same STL files of each case were also sent to a dental laboratory for the fabrication of vacuum-formed samples, which is the current technology used for manufacturing aligners. The intaglio …
