Effects Of Full-Time Versus Part-Time Clear Aligner Wear On Periodontal Health, Pain And Compliance In Orthodontic Patients, Mohamed Adel Afify, Ahmed Medhat Eltimamy, Fouad A. El Sharaby, Hala Monir Abdelmajeed

Future Dental Journal

INTRODUCTION: Clear aligner treatment's main drawback is that the patient decides how long to wear them each day. For clear aligner therapy to be successful, compliance is essential. A poor treatment outcome would arise from noncompliant patients.

METHODS: The study was a randomized clinical trial of 2 parallel groups (7 patients per group) who underwent clear aligner orthodontic treatment having an age range of 17-24 years. A part-time group wore the aligners for 16 hours per day and a full-time group wore the aligners for 22 hours per day. The study investigated the first eight aligners of the treatment. Compliance …

Emergency Department And Dental Clinic Perceptions Of Appropriate, And Preventable, Use Of The Ed For Non-Traumatic Dental Conditions In Hot-Spot Counties: A Mixed Methods Study, Shawnda Schroeder, Judy Beck, Nick Medalen, Anastasia Stepanov

Indigenous Health Faculty Publications

Objectives:Frequency of emergency department (ED) use for nontraumatic dental conditions (NTDC) is a well-researched community health concern. However, research predominately relies on ambulatory ED discharge records. This explanatory sequential mixed methods study reviewed NTDC ED use in hot-spot counties and assessed perceptions around preventable and appropriate use among EDs and dental clinics.

Methods:Tooth pain data (2015-2021) were drawn from State Medicaid, and the Early Notification of Community-Based Epidemics (ESSENCE). NTDC data were compiled using International Classification of Disease, Ninth and Tenth Revisions. Employing extreme case sampling, providers in counties with the highest per-capita NTDC ED use were interviewed.

Results:North Dakota …

The Effect Of 980 Nm Diode Laser In Relieving The Periodontal Pocket Symptoms: A Clinical Study, Hareth A. Alrikabi, Lamyaa A. Saeed Jul 2023

The Effect Of 980 Nm Diode Laser In Relieving The Periodontal Pocket Symptoms: A Clinical Study, Hareth A. Alrikabi, Lamyaa A. Saeed

Al-Ameed Journal for Medical Research and Health Sciences

Introduction: Periodontal Pockets are pathological spaces located between the teeth and the adjacent soft tissue. Some Periodontal pockets asymptomatic, while others My have significant symptoms. Patients with active periodontal pockets may feel pain, bleeding and swollen gingiva (adjacent to pocket). These symptoms appear because of a microbial invasion to this space and the accumulation of food debris. Objective: This study aims to explore the effect of diode lasers in relieving the symptoms of active periodontal pockets. Materials and methods: The method is based on irradiating the active periodontal pocket by using 980 nanometer diode laser and recording the condition of …

Background: Skeletal anchorage devices have been developed for case requiring absolute anchorage during orthodontic treatment. One of these anchorage devices is the Infra-zygomatic mini-implant type. However, the pain associated with this type of appliance have not been sufficiently evaluated from the patient’s point of view. Aim: The aim of this study was to survey patients for one week after insertion of the infra-zygomatic mini-implants and 1 week following every reactivation in order to evaluate their pain and discomfort as well as the percentage of mini-screw failure. Materials and methods: 10 patients requiring infra-zygomatic mini-implants were selected. All participants completed questionnaires …

Traumatic neuroma is neuronal tissue proliferation developed in a nerve injury site, often associatedwith increased sensitivity and spontaneous or evoked neuropathic pain. The mechanisms leading to the disorganized nerve proliferation are not completely understood, though inflammation in the injured nerve vicinity most likely has a role in the process. Inflammatory cytokines are also known to be involvedin the maintenance and development of post-traumatic and neuropathic pain. The goal of this study wasto quantify and compare pro and anti-inflammatory cytokines (TNF- , IL-1 , IL-6 and IL-10) levels innerves that formed neuromas and nerves that did not, following sciatic nerve transection. …

An Instrument To Measure Dental Students' Communication Skills With Patients In Six Specific Circumstances: An Exploratory Factor Analysis, Joanna Alice Aalboe, Mitzi M. Schumacher

Center for Oral Health Research Faculty Publications

The aim of this study was to explore the internal structure of an instrument assessing dental students' confidence in their ability to communicate with patients in six specific circumstances (anxious, in pain, etc.) using exploratory factor analysis. In a Communication in the Dental Health Care Setting course at a U.S. dental school, second-year dental students in two years (2013 and 2014) responded to the six items on a survey instrument. Of the total 123 students, 122 fully completed the instrument, for a response rate of 99%. Analysis of the results identified a unidimensional scale with regards to patient-specific communication self-efficacy …

Comparison Of Injection Discomfort And Anesthetic Duration Of Plain Polocaine Versus Epinephrine Containing Articaine And Lidocaine, Dana Doan

Theses and Dissertations

Purpose: To determine possible differences in the pain level and soft tissue anesthesia duration of plain polocaine versus epinephrine-containing articaine and lidocaine during intraoral injections. Methods: Forty-eight subjects received plain polocaine and one epinephrine-containing anesthetic. Injections were randomized according to the first injection a)left or right buccal sulcus and b)epinephrine or not. The second injections were the opposite conditions. Subjects then recorded discomfort on a VAS and the time anesthesia wore off. Result: The second injection’s pain rating was influenced by the first. This carry-over effect makes it impossible to analyze all of the data. An analysis of the first …

Comparative Efficacy Of 2 Topical Anesthetics For The Placement Of Orthodontic Temporary Anchorage Devices, Derek S Reznik, Arthur H Jeske, Jung-Wei Chen, Jeryl English

Journal Articles

This study compared the effectiveness of topical benzocaine 20% versus a combination of lidocaine, tetracaine, and phenylephrine in providing sufficient analgesia for the placement of orthodontic temporary anchorage devices (TADs). The 2 topical anesthetics were tested against each other bilaterally using a randomized, double-blind, crossover design. The agents were left in place for the amount of time prescribed by the manufacturer. The TAD was then placed, and each subject rated the degree of pain on a Heft-Parker visual analogue scale. A pulse oximeter was used to record the preoperative and postoperative pulse rates. Statistically significant differences in perceived pain (P …

Differential Diagnosis Of Orofacial Pain I: Associated With Intracranial And Extracranial Structures And Psychogenic Disorders, Rodolfo Acosta-Ortiz

HPD Articles

Orofacial Pain (OFP) is a common problem among the general population and represents a condition that is potentially debilitating and deteriorating. The correct diagnosis is the principal base for an adequate management; in patients with DOF this may be a simple task or a very complex and frustrating experience for both, clinician, and patient. However, the clinician's knowledge of all possible pain condition that can affect the orofacial region can facilitate the diagnostic process. It is important to emphasize that is very difficult to diagnose something unknown for the clinician and even though "common things occur commonly", it is not …
