Collagenous Myofibroblastic Tumor Of The Mandible: Case Report Of A Unique Locally Aggressive Neoplasm Journal Head And Neck Pathology, Jason W. Nash, Amy C. Hessel, Nadarajah Vigneswaran, Adel K. El-Naggar

Journal Articles

We report a locally aggressive collagenous myofibroblastic neoplasm of the mandible in an 18-year-old male. Clinically, the lesion presented with rapid growth and irregular mandibular bone destruction. Grossly, the tumor was 10 cm in greatest dimension, light-tan, firm, and involving the posterior one-thirds of the body and inferior half of the left mandibular ramus. Histologically, the lesion was composed of a loose spindle cell proliferation interspersed with periodic dense bands of collagen. The spindle cells reacted positively to smooth muscle actin, calponin, and focally to desmin and were negative for S-100, pan-cytokeratin, CD99, CD34 and caldesmon, supporting myofibroblastic derivation. At …

Pulp Polyp Associated With A Natal Tooth: Case Report, Brian D. Hodgson, Rodney Vergotine, Lance Lambert

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

Natal teeth are an infrequent occurrence at birth. Often these teeth are extracted because they are very mobile and pose a risk of aspiration. This is a rare case in which a natal tooth was extracted by the pediatrician with his fingers. A root fragment remained and out of this developed a large pulp polyp. This relationship has not been previously reported.

Adding Dental Therapists To The Health Care Team To Improve Access To Oral Health Care For Children, David A. Nash

Oral Health Science Faculty Publications

Oral Health in America: A Report of the Surgeon General, and the subsequent National Call to Action to Promote Oral Health, contributed significantly to raising awareness regarding the lack of access to oral health care by many Americans, especially minority and low-income populations, with resulting disparities in oral health. The problem is particularly acute among children. The current dental workforce in the United States is inadequate to meet the oral health care needs of children. It is inadequate in terms of numbers of dentists, as well as their geographic distribution, ethnicity, education, and practice orientation. Dental therapists, paraprofessionals …

Effects Of Different Denture Cleansers On The Tensile Bond Strength Of Denture Liners, Selda Keskin Nov 2009

Effects Of Different Denture Cleansers On The Tensile Bond Strength Of Denture Liners, Selda Keskin

The effect of two denture cleansers (Polident1 and Protefix1) on the tensile bond strength between four soft liner materials (Molloplast B1, Permaflex1, Sofreliner Tough Medium1, and GC Reline Soft1) and a conventional denture base resin was investigated. For each of the liner materials 35 test specimens were prepared according to test the requirements and assigned into seven groups (n¼5). Before tensile testing, five of the liner specimens were kept in water or soaked in two cleansing solutions during 2 and 7 d. Five other samples served as a control group subjected directly to tensile testing. The bond strength values were …

Tensile Bond Strength Of A Highly Cross-Linked Denture Tooth To The, Selda Keskin

This study compared tensile bond strengths between conventional compressionmolded heat (HC)-, auto (AP)-, and microwave-polymerized (MC) poly(methyl methacrylate)-based denture resins and a relatively new injection-molded, microwave-polymerized polyurethane based resin (MI) bonded to a highly cross-linked denture tooth. In the first part of the experiments, denture teeth were used as received. In the second part, they were treated with dichloromethane to see its effect on bonding of conventional denture bases (HCS and APS). Bond strength was tested in tension according to ADA specification No.15. The results showed that the HC group failed cohesively because of higher interface bonding (49.95 MPa) compared …

The considerations for admissibility suggested by the Daubert trilogy challenge forensic experts to provide scientific support for opinion testimony. The defense bar has questioned the reliability of bitemark analysis. Under an award from the U. S. Department of Justice, via the Midwest Forensic Resource Center, a two-year feasibility study was undertaken to quantify six dental characteristics. Using two computer programs, the exemplars of 419 volunteers were digitally scanned, characteristics were measured, and frequency was calculated. The study demonstrates that there were outliers or rare dental characteristics in measurements. An analysis of the intra-observer and inter-observer consistency demonstrated a high degree …

New Tfii-I Family Target Genes Involved In Embryonic Development, Aleksandr V. Makeyev, Dashzeveg Bayarsaihan

SoDM Articles

Two members of the TFII-I family transcription factor genes, GTF2I and GTF2IRD1, are the prime candidates responsible for the craniofacial and cognitive abnormalities of Williams syndrome patients. We have previously generated mouse lines with targeted disruption of Gtf2ird1 and Gtf2i. Microarray analysis revealed significant changes in the expression profile of mutant embryos. Here we described three unknown genes that were dramatically down-regulated in mutants. The 2410018M08Rik/Scand3 gene encodes a protein of unknown function with CHCH and hATC domains. Scand3 is downregulated during mouse embryonic stem cell (ES) differentiation. 4933436H12Rik is a testis-specific gene, which encodes a protein with no known …

Using Cone Beam Computed Tomography To Identify A Prediction Model For Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Jodi Parker Sep 2009

Using Cone Beam Computed Tomography To Identify A Prediction Model For Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Jodi Parker

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Introduction: Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) patients have increased risk of morbidity and mortality. Early diagnosis may reduce morbidity and mortality. Prediction of OSA from imaging may help to identify OSA patients earlier in life. CBCT can be used for OSA diagnostic imaging due to its three-dimensional (3D) visualization of the upper airway and craniofacial complex. Magnification associated with conventional 2D radiography is eliminated with CBCT, and radiation to the patient is significantly less than previous modalities used to measure craniofacial & airway measurements associated with OSA. During a CBCT scan, the patient's image is taken supine, rather than the upright …

Influence Of Stainless Steel Orthodontic Brackets On Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Christian James Hoybjerg Sep 2009

Influence Of Stainless Steel Orthodontic Brackets On Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Christian James Hoybjerg

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Introduction: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines provide 2D as well as 3D images that are excellent in contrasting soft-tissue in the maxillofacial region and are void of ionizing radiation. The drawbacks include the lack of depiction of cortical bony detail and image degradation caused by substances in the scanned area. Specifically, in the orthodontic field stainless steel brackets cause more distortion of MR images then any other bracket material. It is unknown what type of stainless steel alloy causes the most MRI distortion. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the degree of craniofacial MR distortion caused by various …

The Influence Of Work Of Fracture On Six Orthodontic Bonding Systems, Tyler S. Pritchard Sep 2009

The Influence Of Work Of Fracture On Six Orthodontic Bonding Systems, Tyler S. Pritchard

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Introduction: Bonding is the primary method of attaching brackets to teeth in modem orthodontics. Thus, many studies have focused on the maximum shear bond strength values of orthodontic adhesives. In contrast, very little research has been performed considering the work of fracture of orthodontic bonding systems. Work of Fracture is defined as the area under the curve of a stress-strain graph. Previous shear bond strength studies measured the force necessary to produce bond failure. The purpose of this study was to measure the maximum shear force and displacement of six bonding systems and to calculate the work of fracture.

Effects Of Functional Appliances On Pharyngeal Airway Dimensions: A Cone Beam Computed Tomography Study, Melissa K. Lee Sep 2009

Effects Of Functional Appliances On Pharyngeal Airway Dimensions: A Cone Beam Computed Tomography Study, Melissa K. Lee

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Introduction: Functional appliances are intended to correct by incremental advancement of the mandible for correction of skeletal Class 11 relationships. Similar in design to functional appliances, mandibular advancing devices (MAD) are used for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients as they increase the size of the airway by drawing the tongue and soft palate forwards, and thus maintain its patency during sleep. It has been shown that significant increases in airway dimensions and decreases in airway resistance were gained in OSA patients while evaluated with a MAD in place. This retrospective study evaluated volumetric, cross-sectional area and linear changes in the …

Observer Reliability Of Cephalometric Landmark Identification On 3-D Mr Images, Michael S. Pollack Sep 2009

Observer Reliability Of Cephalometric Landmark Identification On 3-D Mr Images, Michael S. Pollack

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Introduction: Cephalometric analysis is a cornerstone of orthodontic diagnosis, yet much information is lost when 3-dimensional structures are assessed with 2-dimensional methods. CBCT offers 3-dimensional imaging but at the cost of higher levels of ionizing radiation. Magnetic resonance imaging provides 3-dimensional imaging without ionizing radiation and additionally imparts visualization of soft tissue structures. Prior to employing MR images for cephalometric analysis, reliability of landmark identification must be assessed. The purpose of this study was to evaluate intra- and interobserver reliability in 3-dimensional landmark identification using MR images.

Materials and Methods: Fifteen cranial MR images (3.0 T, MP-RAGE) from subjects between …

Effects Of Functional Appliances On The Tmj And Mandibular Length Of Skeletal Class Ii Patients: A Cone Beam Computed Tomography Study, David C. Lee

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Introduction: Functional appliances have been efficiently used in the treatment of Class II malocclusions caused by retrognathic mandibles. Cone beam computed tomography has enabled us to make more accurate linear measurements by eliminating superimposition of other structures and to analyze skeletal anatomic detail in all three planes of space. This retrospective study evaluated the osseous changes in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and length of the mandible in skeletal Class II malocclusion patients treated with the fixed functional appliances and compared measurements with Class I malocclusion patients treated with orthodontic mechanics that did not alter skeletal relationships.
