Periodontal disease is the primary cause of tooth loss in the adult, and therefore, early diagnosis of periodontal disease by the general practitioner is important in terms of prevention as well as treatment. The present study was designed to develop a periodontal screening examination which would fulfill the following requirements:

  1. It should utilize precise and easily understood criteria.
  2. It should take a short period of time.
  3. It should enable the practitioner to accurately place patients into various disease categories.
  4. It should enable the practitioner to easily and quickly relate these disease categories to treatment.

Inflammation of the connective tissue adjacent to the periodontal pocket may depend on the continuous presence of bacteria. Following periodontal treatment, subgingival plaque accumulation may interfere with healing. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of irrigation with chlorhexidine or oxytetracycline on the cultivable bacteria in standardized chronic periodontal pockets in dogs. Chronic periodontal pockets were irrigated with either 5 ml. of 2 percent chlorhexidine or 250 mg. of oxytetracycline in 5 ml. distilled water. The pockets were irrigated dally for two days and were sampled on the first, fourth, seventh, fourteeth, twenty-first, thirty-fifth and forty-second days …
