An Investigation Of Motor Speech And Motor Limb Movements Following A Sport-Related Concussion-An Extension Study, Linda Phan Jan 2016

An Investigation Of Motor Speech And Motor Limb Movements Following A Sport-Related Concussion-An Extension Study, Linda Phan

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Background: Minimal research is available regarding the effects on motor speech and motor limb movements following a sport-related concussion (SRC). A sensitive measure is necessary to detect subtle deficits in motor speech, as it may provide diagnostic insight involving return-to- play decisions.

Purpose: This research aimed at replicating and extending a previous research study, Hewitt (2015), conducted at the University of Texas at El Paso. The Hewitt (2015) study examined motor speech tasks and motor limb tasks which included the following: oral diadochokinetics (DDK): sequential motion rate (SMR)(i.e. /puh-tuh-kuh/) and alternating motion rate (AMR) (i.e. /puhpuhpuh/, /tuhtuhtuh/, /kuhkuhkuh/); speech rate …

The Contribution Of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury/Concussion To The Development Of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms, Kylie Lauren Marshall Jan 2015

The Contribution Of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury/Concussion To The Development Of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms, Kylie Lauren Marshall

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

A controversial issue is whether TBI is a necessary precursor to the development of PTSD symptoms, or if the two variables are mutually exclusive. Recent rodent-models reveal that a stressful environment cannot cause PTSD symptoms directly without TBI, yet it is unknown if PTSD symptoms can develop following a TBI. This study provides a potential analogue to study this relationship by evaluating the effects of sports-related concussion. Purpose: This study investigated two questions, 1) Is there a significant difference in the frequency of PTSD symptoms reported by athletes at baseline (BL) testing and post-concussion (PC) testing over time? 2) Is …

A Comparison Of Performance On The Wii Basic Balance Test Between Concussed And Non-Concussed Collegiate Students, Vanessa Eileen Fernandez-Vivar Jan 2013

A Comparison Of Performance On The Wii Basic Balance Test Between Concussed And Non-Concussed Collegiate Students, Vanessa Eileen Fernandez-Vivar

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The Wii Board Basic Balance Test has served as a useful tool for assessing balance in concussion management. In the event that an athlete is concussed, baseline data will be useful when managing a concussion. In cases where baseline data is not available, having normative data is useful to refer to in order to make appropriate return-to-play decisions. To date, normative data on the Wii Board Basic Balance Test is not available. Purpose: This study will compare the performance of concussed and nonconcussed individuals on the Wii Basic Balance Test. Method: A between subject design between the two groups of …
