Despite an increase in the promotion of early progressive mobility, its decrease in hospital-acquired complications and improvement of patient outcomes, there remains a reluctance in staff commitment to daily evaluation and implementation. This is largely due to the fact nurses or other interprofessional staff are the primary individuals responsible for this change in process. Background: It was estimated that up to 30,000 primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) procedures would be cancelled each week during the moratorium on elective surgeries in the United States. The purpose of this study was to analyze the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on elective total joint arthroplasty utilization in the United States. Background

Patient engagement is a patient’s capacity and willingness to participate and collaborate in their own health care. This scoping review aimed to identify tools used to measure engagement among surgical patients, the levels of engagement and the association between engagement and surgical outcomes. We hypothesise that highly engaged patients are more likely to achieve better surgical outcomes.

Review methods

MEDLINE/PubMed, CINAHL, SCOPUS and Embase were searched for studies that assessed adult perioperative patients for engagement. Analysis from charting the data identified the measurement tools, levels of capacity to engage and relationships between engagement and surgical outcomes.

Clavicle fractures are common injuries that occur across all age ranges, but are largely seen in young, active males. The majority of these fractures (70-80%) occur in the midshaft of the clavicle. The purpose of this review was to compare non-operative treatment to operative treatment of midclavicular fractures and determine whether treatment for adolescent clavicle fractures more closely aligns with pediatric or adult management. Cobalt-Chromium alloy is commonly used in total joint arthroplasty (TJA). Several studies have investigated evidence of inflammatory-cell-induced-corrosion (ICIC) causing pitting in TJA retrieved implants. Others have determined that placing orthopedic alloys into lower pH solutions will increase the rate of corrosion. We have determined that electrochemical potential and corrosion rates of human knee synovial fluid show a variation greater than an order of magnitude. This means there is going to be a significant variation between a patient’s local environment of the TJA implant and may affect how macrophages interact with alloy oxide layers. Distant metastases are rare, and intraventricular cardiac metastases are even more infrequent. Bladder cancer represents the 6th most common for men and is classified into muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) and non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). NMIBC (T1, Ta, Tis), accounting for approximately 75% of new bladder cancer diagnoses, is limited to the mucosa, submucosa, and lamina propria. Studies have approximated the rate of recurrence in NMIBC between 50 - 70%, which sometimes progresses to muscle invasive disease. Intraoperative proximal femur fractures (PFF) occur in 3.7% of total hip arthroplasties (THA) using the standard mallet broaching technique and increase a patient’s risk of revision surgery from 3.4% to 10%. The Depuy KINCISE automatic broaching system is designed to attenuate the risk of these fractures by applying consistent co-linear force to the broach. The aim of this study is to determine if the KINCISE system decreases the rate of intraoperative PFF fracture during THA compared to the standard mallet technique.

Appendiceal diverticula present as rare clinical findings and are most often confused with acute appendicitis due to similar presentation. The incidence in such cases is reported at a rate no greater than 1%.

We present a rare case of a 65-year-old female treated for acute appendicitis who was instead found to have acute sequelae of appendiceal diverticulosis.

Background: Predictive factors for performing remplissage concomitantly with arthroscopic Bankart repair include the presence of humeral or glenoid defects >11% and/or revision surgery. International and societal consensus statements support these findings, as surgeons recommend the Latarjet procedure for patients with significant glenoid bone loss (>15-20%) while remplissage is recommended for patients with off-track or engaging Hill-Sachs lesions without significant glenoid bone loss. While several studies have compared outcomes between Latarjet surgery and remplissage, these studies have only evaluated patients with engaging Hill-Sachs lesions, not consecutive patient cohorts indicated for each surgery.

Those who suffer a partial thickness ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) tear often undergo a period of nonoperative management including physical therapy rehabilitation. This treatment is aimed at optimizing range of motion (ROM) and strengthening the supporting structures around the elbow to help offload the UCL.

Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) has been adopted as an approach in kidney surgery. Laparoscopic kidney surgery has been introduced in the 1990s with robotics emerging a decade after. The minimally invasive approach has been technically feasible and has been shown to be noninferior with preserved oncology standards to open surgery. In 2015, healthcare-associated infection (HAI) prevalence survey found that there were an estimated 110,800 surgical site infections (SSIs) associated with inpatient surgeries in 2015. Consequently, instruments and implants sterilized by immediate use steam sterilization (IUSS) have been found to increase the patient’s risk for an SSIs. Due to these risks, the Joint Commission (TJC) determined that organizations should implement evidenced-based protocols to reduce IUSS use. We conducted a prospective multicenter cohort study to determine any association between patients’ satisfaction of care and their outcomes 1 year after lumbar spine surgery.

Methods: Satisfaction with care was recorded through telephone interviews and a standardized questionnaire.
