Standardizing Documentation Of Patients’ Measurable Decline To Increase Medicare Compliance In The Hospice Setting, Julia A. Gines
Master's Projects and Capstones
Problem: Staff nurses have difficulties standardizing documentation of patients’ measurable decline during the admission and recertification process to justify the need for hospice services. Context: According to Murrin (2016), the average Medicare compliance rate of hospice organizations is 86%. This quality improvement (QI) project aims to increase an outpatient hospice organization’s Medicare compliance rate of 66% to the average, nationwide level through standardization of documentation (Frontz, 2021). Interventions: The proposed intervention is to implement a QI project of the following assessment tools: Palliative Performance Scale (PPS), Functional Assessment Staging Tool (FAST) and Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC). Clinical nurses will attend …
Supporting South Korea’S Aging Population: How Ai And Iot Acceptance Connects The Young And Old, Bobby Im
Supporting South Korea’S Aging Population: How Ai And Iot Acceptance Connects The Young And Old, Bobby Im
Master's Projects and Capstones
In 2024, South Korea surpassed every other nation by becoming the country with the lowest fertility rate (below 0.7%). Population decline will hinder future ability to care for their aging population and although the government and private corporations are investing millions of dollars on developing Artificial Intelligence-Internet of Things (AI-IoT) devices to support the aging, the acceptance levels and the amount of family support required is undervalued. By examining AI-IoT’s current use and role in South Korea’s public health system this paper shows how intergenerational support helps optimize existing procedures and equipment, increases the level of acceptance and use, and …
Intervention To Increase Home Preparation For Colonoscopies, Joshua Victor Stone
Intervention To Increase Home Preparation For Colonoscopies, Joshua Victor Stone
Master's Projects and Capstones
Abstract
Problem: Inpatient colonoscopies are costly to healthcare systems and inconvenient for eligible patients. The cost for a two-night inpatient bed is currently $4800.00 currently. The department manager led a five-month quality improvement project that was initiated in one 180-bed community medical center in Northern California to increase outpatient options, reduce the census and decrease the admission rate.
Context: Overburdened medical facilities often miss the opportunity to utilize ambulatory procedures due to competing operational priorities. In this setting, the Care Without Delay (CWD) department microsystem addresses barriers that impact operational throughput, efficiency, and unnecessary admissions.
Intervention: A …
Implementing Nurse Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Specialists To Maintain A Sustainable Program, David L. Boyd
Implementing Nurse Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Specialists To Maintain A Sustainable Program, David L. Boyd
DNP Qualifying Manuscripts
Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) offers hope for patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome when other treatment methods fail. However, ECMO requires continuous hourly management leading to extremely high operating costs. With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the high number of patients on ECMO led to a significant increase in the costs when using perfusionists to manage ECMO. Switching to a nurse-driven model resulted in a 52% decrease in costs related to the hourly management. Changing to a nurse-driven program provided increased nursing support and sustainability, and with determination and support, other ECMO centers can change to nurse-driven programs too.

The effectiveness and mechanism of a low temperature air plasma torch in clotting blood are explored. Both blood droplets and smeared blood samples were used in the tests. The treated droplet samples reveal how blood clotting depends on the distance at which the torch operated, and for how long the droplets have been exposed to the torch. Microscopy and cell count of smeared blood samples shed light on dependencies of erythrocyte and platelet counts on torch distance and exposure time. With an increase of torch distance, the platelet count of treated blood samples increases but is less than that of …
