Advancements in veterinary medicine have resulted in an increased number of geriatric horses being presented for medical or surgical procedures that require general anesthesia. Due to the physiological changes associated with aging and the likelihood of concurrent disease conditions, the geriatric equine is at an increased risk during anesthesia. The main physiological changes associated with aging, and their impact on anesthesia, are discussed in this review.

Effects Of Reiki, Yoga, Or Meditation On The Physical And Psychological Symptoms Of Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy: A Randomized Pilot Study, Paul G. Clark, Geronima Cortese-Jimenez, Eric Cohen

Sociology, Anthropology and Social Work Faculty Research and Scholarship

Three complementary approaches for managing physical and psychological symptoms related to chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy were evaluated against an education-only control arm. This study included 26 participants who were randomly assigned to weekly, hour-long sessions of yoga, Reiki, meditation, or an educational control experience for 6 weeks. Each participant completed pre–post measures of neurotoxicity, quality of life, psychological distress, and mindfulness. Descriptive analysis of the data indicated that all experimental group participants demonstrated improved within-group scores on quality of life and neurotoxicity outcomes following intervention; however, the improvements were not statistically significant. Ginseng is one of the most commonly consumed herbal medicines in the world. Consumption is highest in females, thus my purpose was to define the concentration responsive effects of North American alcoholic and aqueous ginseng extracts on preimplantation development in vitro and on pregnancy and post-partum development in the mouse. 2-cell embryos from female mice were cultured with 5 different concentrations of both extracts, ginsenosides Rb1, Rg1 and Re, a combinatorial ginsenoside solution and a polysaccharide fraction. Indigofera tinctoria Linn. (Family: Fabaceae) is traditionally used for the treatment of various ailments including nervous disorders. In homoeopathy too, I. tinctoria is used in the treatment of epilepsy and other nervous disorders, but no data has been scientifically documented to establish its central nervous system activities. A 6 year old boy, presented at Mother and Child Health clinic of Regional Research Institute (Homoeopathy), Mumbai, suffering from very rare neurological syndrome sub-acute measles encephalitis (SME) with early neurological sequel, treated with Zincum metallicum on the basis of totality of symptoms. The auxiliary measures, nursing & medical care was provided along with homoeopathic treatment. The effective response was observed without any post viral neurological deficits. Xylose is a natural monosaccharide found in biomass such as straw, pecan shells, cottonseed hulls, and corncobs. Using this monosaccharide, we report the green synthesis and characterization of biocompatible, biodegradable xylose encapsulated gold nanoparticles (Xyl-GNPs) with potential antibacterial activity. GNPs were synthesized using the bioreduction property of xylose on the chloroaurate anions in an aqueous solution at room temperature and at atmospheric pressure. The characterization of synthesized GNPs was examined by UV-vis spectroscopy; transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). This study examined the usage patterns of nondrug alternatives and obtained knowledge that will be beneficial to future drug abuse prevention and rehabilitation in college students. The purpose was to identify the specific nondrug/drug alternatives used to alter mood by non-Hispanic Whites and Hispanics. Analysis revealed that engaging in discussion with spouse/friends was used most frequently to alter mood. The overall distribution of drug alternatives and nondrug alternatives differed significantly from chance in 72 participants. Further pair-wise analyses found there were significant differences between five drug and nondrug alternatives endorsed by non-Hispanic Whites and Hispanics. In conclusion, it was found …

Musicians are a high-risk occupational group for musculoskeletal disorders. Often manifesting in muscle tension, pain and paresthesia, musculoskeletal disorders can drastically affect comfort, mentality and endurance while performing. This study sought to examine the effects of electromyography (EMG) biofeedback training in reducing musculoskeletal symptoms in music performance. The subjects were university-level violinists and cellists. Over a period of 2-4 weeks, all participants underwent EMG biofeedback training while performing their instrument using audio feedback. No significant results were found, but patterns of decreased muscle tension and increased performance comfort and endurance were observed.

OBJECTIVE: Adiponectin (APN) system malfunction is causatively related to increased cardiovascular morbidity/mortality in diabetic patients. The aim of the current study was to investigate molecular mechanisms responsible for APN transmembrane signaling and cardioprotection.

METHODS AND RESULTS: Compared with wild-type mice, caveolin-3 knockout (Cav-3KO) mice exhibited modestly increased myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury (increased infarct size, apoptosis, and poorer cardiac function recovery; P

CONCLUSIONS: Taken together, these results demonstrated for the first time that Cav-3 plays an essential role in APN transmembrane signaling and APN anti-ischemic/cardioprotective actions.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the crude extract of H. antidysentrica seeds (Ha.Cr) and its fractions, n-hexane (Ha.Hx), n-butanol (Ha.Bu) and aqueous (Ha.Aq), for their diuretic effect in Wistar rats and to investigate whether the activity is concentrated in any of the fractions.
