Gene Alterations By Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor Gamma Agonists In Human Colorectal Cancer Cells, Maria Cekanova, X Li, J Yuan, K B. Kim, Seung J. Baek

Faculty Publications and Other Works -- Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Biology

The peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARgamma) is a nuclear transcription factor that controls the genes involved in metabolism and carcinogenesis. In the present study, we examined the alteration of gene expression in HCT-116 human colorectal cancer cells by PPARgamma agonists: MCC-555 (5 microM), rosiglitazone (5 microM), and 15-deoxy-Delta12,14-prostaglandin J2 (1 microM). The long-oligo microarray data revealed a list of target genes commonly induced (307 genes) and repressed (32 genes) by tested PPARgamma agonists. These genes were analyzed by Onto-Express software and KEGG pathway analysis and revealed that PPARgamma agonists are involved in cell proliferation, focal adhesion, and several signaling pathways. …

Use Of Origanum Vulgare Essential Oil To Combat Human Pathogenic Yeasts, Amber Adams

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

With the outbreak of autoimmune diseases, pathogenic yeasts have begun to pose a serious medical threat. This threat is compounded as more of these yeasts evolve resistance to existing antifungal drugs. In the ever-widening search for new, effective antifungal treatment, the realm of herbal medicine offers some interesting and potentially valuable alternatives. Origanum vulgare is one herb that has demonstrated broad spectrum antimicrobial activity against bacteria and fungi alike. This study undertook to examine the effects of the essential oil of Origanum vulgare on Candida albicans, Cryptococcus neoformans, Rhodotorula rubrum, and Cryptococcus albidus, with the hypothesis that Essential Oil of …

The Influence Of Medicinal Plants On The Spiritism, Religion, And Science Of Tulear, Madagascar, Meghan Sweet

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Medicinal plants are polyvalent remedies used in industry and medicine. They have curative and preventative powers when used internally and externally on humans. They are also used for agricultural and veterinary purposes. They are necessary to the human body to give health and strength. Medicinal plants influence spiritism, religion, and science. These three worldviews make value judgments regarding medicinal plants. This study determines some limits and interdependencies of each worldview by looking at how they are influenced by medicinal plants in Tulear, Madagascar.

Application Of Hptlc In The Standardization Of A Homoeopathic Mother Tincture Of Nux Vomica, D Shanbhag, Sunita Jayaraman

Indian Journal of Research in Homoeopathy

In this study,we have chosen HPTLC (High Performance Thin Layer Chromatography) as a method of analysis to develop a standard procedure based on fingerprinting characteristics for the evaluation of homreopathic formulations. A simple and accurate HPTLC method has been developed for the quantification of brucine, one of the chief active chemical components of Nux vomica (along with strychnine),and the fingerprinting of the in-house mother tincture of Nux vomica, considered here to be a standard, with that of different marketed samples available from manufacturers of homreopathic medicines in India. This HPTLC method was quantitatively evaluated in terms of stability, repeatability, and accuracy.

Argemone Mexicana: A Multicentric Double Blind Homoeopathic Pathogenetic Trial (Drug Proving) Carried Out By Ccrh, N Dey, K Das, Yogender Rai

Indian Journal of Research in Homoeopathy

Objective : Objective of the study was to elicit the pharmacodynamic response of the drug, Argemone mexicana (prickly poppy) on healthy human volunteers, in non-toxic doses. Methodology : The drug was proved through a double-blind placebo controlled technique and is a multi-centric study. Trial drug was proved in three potencies (200C, 30C and 6C) on 38 volunteers who were selected and declared apparently healthy during their pre-trial examination by specialists. The volunteers took the three potencies (56 dozes of each potency ) in three stages for a varying period. The symptoms generated during the trial period were noted by the …

Search For Potential Anticancer Agents: Evaluation Of Anticancer Activity Of Carcinosin, Apis And Thuja, Soma Samanta, A De, P Tarafder, Tarun Jha

Indian Journal of Research in Homoeopathy

As a part of our composite programme of rational drug discovery, homeopathic medicines Carcinosin, Apis and Thuja with different strengths were taken into consideration for anticancer activity to find out the effectiveness of these drugs in animal models. Here, we have reported the anticancer activity of Carcinosin of some strengths from a manufacturer where tumor cell count as well as tumor weight inhibition were considered as the biological activity parameters. Anticancer activity of all collected medicines of Carcinosin, Apis and Thuja were evaluated against another animal model considering the survival time as the biological activity parameter. Result showed that the …

Paradigm Shift: Why The Need?, Dennis M. Richards

Dennis M Richards

The projected costs of trends expected to occur in Australian society over the next 40 years, particularly demographic changes, have the potential to threaten the fiscal sustainability of Australian Government finances. These costs particularly relate to the financing of health care. The Strategic Plan of the Chiropractors’ Association of Australian (National) Ltd. includes two strategies that seek to address this situation. This paper details these trends and threats, why new models of health care will be required, and why a paradigm shift in thinking in health care may be needed.

In 1997 the Chiropractors’ Association of Australia engaged a professional facilitator to develop and run a series of consensus conferences around the country. The purpose of these was to engage CAA members in set, organised procedures that ultimately produced Core Values of chiropractic, Core Purposes of the CAA and a Vision Statement to guide the organisation in its future strategic planning and activities. This paper documents those consensus activities, lists the outcomes and notes proposed efforts to review them.
