Remodeling Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer's Aggressive Profile And Metabolic Signature By Natural Alkaloid Berberine, Tara Elizabeth Jarboe Mar 2024

Remodeling Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer's Aggressive Profile And Metabolic Signature By Natural Alkaloid Berberine, Tara Elizabeth Jarboe

NYMC Student Theses and Dissertations

Anaplastic thyroid cancer is a rare, fatal cancer with a five-year survival of 4%. Universally diagnosed at stage IV, anaplastic thyroid cancer is characterized by its lack of differentiation, rapid proliferative rate, highly inflammatory tumor microenvironment, and metabolic dysregulation. Refractory to all established therapies, anaplastic thyroid cancer requires a novel therapeutic approach that targets all of these drivers of anaplastic thyroid cancer carcinogenesis. We propose natural alkaloid berberine as a therapeutic with multitarget efficacy to alter mitochondrial metabolism and reprogram anaplastic thyroid cancer’s aggressive phenotype. Our in vitro model uses monocyte cell line U937, anaplastic thyroid cancer cell lines T238 …

Novel Natural Compounds Derived From Tcm In The Treatment Of Food Induced Anaphylaxis, Ibrahim Musa

NYMC Student Theses and Dissertations

Food allergy is a highly prevalent disease affecting about 30 million people in the U.S. It is managed primarily by food avoidance due to lack of promising treatment options. ASHMI (anti-asthma herbal intervention) which consists of three components, Sophorae flavescentis, Ganoderma lucidum, Glycyrrhiza uralensis has been shown to inhibit allergic lung inflammation in antigen sensitized and challenged mice. In this study we isolate and identify the active compound in Sophorae flavescentis, characterized the mechanism of IgE inhibitory effect, biomarkers and potential to prevent food anaphylaxis.

To separate and identify the compounds we used column chromatography, high-performance liquid chromatography, mass …

Treatment-Emergent Hypomania Possibly Associated With Over-The-Counter Supplements, William Olsufka, Mary-Ann Abraham Jan 2017

Treatment-Emergent Hypomania Possibly Associated With Over-The-Counter Supplements, William Olsufka, Mary-Ann Abraham

Touro College of Pharmacy (New York) Publications and Research

The use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is gaining popularity in the Western world. Among the general public, CAM is often perceived to be associated with less stigma, fewer adverse effects, and may be more affordable. A number of patients utilize CAM for the treatment of depression; however, as there is limited scientific evidence, the safety profile of these supplements are largely unknown. In this case, a 42-year-old man developed hypomania approximately 1 week after S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) and 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) therapy was initiated for depression. The combination of SAMe and 5-HTP can potentially induce hypomanic episodes.

Various cancers, cardiovascular diseases and brain problems can be screened quickly by detection of visible and invisible abnormal findings appearing at organ representation areas.Using strong electromagnetic field resonance phenomenon between 2 identical molecules or tissues, known as O-Ring Test, for which US patent was given, we can identify any molecules non-invasively. Using this method, we were able to map accurate organ representation areas at different parts of the body surfaces. Abnormality always appears as visible or non-visible changes. In cancer positive areas, we found significant increases in OncogenC-fosAb2, Integrin α5 β1, & 8-OH-dG and significant decrease in Taurine&1α, 25 (OH)2D3 (T …

Practitioners today have to contend with a stream of new treatment options that are increasing in number almost daily. The patients undeniably win when we incorporate the latest technology with traditional treatment methods but too often the old gets completely pushed out to make room for the new. While many Complementary Alternative Medicine (CAM) therapies may be considered “old” by some practitioners, there is still a steady flow of articles being published showing that they remain effective. What if instead of abandoning the traditional therapies we used them in true compliment to the newest options? Here we will explore some …

The Scientific Evidence Validating The Use Of Honey As A Medicinal Agent, Raitzel Chemda Bernstein

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Honey has been used to treat wounds, infections, and other diseases since ancient times. Due to the widespread bacterial resistance to antibiotics, scientists have investigated the healing power of honey. Numerous studies have documented the broad-spectrum antibacterial effect of honey and its success in inhibiting MRSA. The use of honey as a wound dressing has proven to successfully heal chronic wounds in short amounts of time by inhibiting pathogens, reducing inflammation, rebuilding damaged tissue, and minimizing scarring. The mechanisms of action are directly related to the high hydrogen peroxide and rich polyphenol content present in honey. These two components account …

Efficacy Of Probiotics Lactobacillus Rhamnosus Gg And Saccharomyces Boulardii In The Treatment Of Antibiotic-Associated Diarrhea And Clostridium Diffiicile-Associated Disease, Estie Klugmann Jan 2013

Efficacy Of Probiotics Lactobacillus Rhamnosus Gg And Saccharomyces Boulardii In The Treatment Of Antibiotic-Associated Diarrhea And Clostridium Diffiicile-Associated Disease, Estie Klugmann

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Antibiotic therapy may cause serious side effects. Two disturbing effects of antibiotic administration are antibiotic-associated diarrhea and Clostridium difficile-associated disorder. Antibiotic-associated diarrhea occurs as a direct result of the normal flora destruction due to the antibiotics - which do not discriminate against pathogens or healthy forms of bacteria. C. diff disorder also occurs as an indirect result of antibiotic administration, because the destruction of the normal flora prevents people from having healthy bacteria to prevent disease. There have been studies conducted to determine if replacing the destroyed normal flora with probiotics, or beneficial microorganisms will prevent or treat these conditions. …
