Gender Nonconforming Children: Education For Rural Vermont Families, Zachary Silberman Jan 2018

Gender Nonconforming Children: Education For Rural Vermont Families, Zachary Silberman

Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects

Trans and Gender Nonconforming children and adolescents make up an increasing percentage of today's youth. Many of their families, parents, and healthcare providers lack information on how to address the topic. Additionally, the lack of research in the field, and the ever changing definitions, can make it difficult to navigate and, as a result, there are several persistent myths and misconceptions. This project seeks to address these myths, the terminology as currently used, and local community resources from a patient and family perspective, specifically targeted at rural Vermont.

Parent-Implemented Language Intervention With Young Children From Low-Ses Environments Who Have Language Impairment, Courtney Allison Hatcher Jan 2018

Parent-Implemented Language Intervention With Young Children From Low-Ses Environments Who Have Language Impairment, Courtney Allison Hatcher

Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences

In this study, the author examined the effects of training four parents from low-socioeconomic environments to use Enhanced Milieu Teaching (EMT) with their young children with language impairment. The investigator used a modified Teach-Model-Coach-Review method to teach parents to use the following EMT strategies during 8-10 individualized, home-based sessions: matched turns, expansions, time delays and milieu teaching prompts. A single-case multiple-baseline design across-behaviors replicated across four parent/child dyads was used to evaluate the parents' use of the EMT strategies. Child language outcomes were also assessed using pre- and post-intervention language samples. All parents learned and demonstrated use of each language …

Parental Decision-Making In Use Of Complementary And Alternative Medicine, Meka B. Astin Jan 2018

Parental Decision-Making In Use Of Complementary And Alternative Medicine, Meka B. Astin

All ETDs from UAB

One health care trend is the growing public interest in, and use of, complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). Research in the United States suggests that significant numbers of children are involved in various forms of alternative medicine. The purpose of this dissertation is to assess the predictors of parental decision-making of CAM use for their child using five categories of CAM therapies: alternative medical systems, biologically- based, mind-body, manipulative, and a separate and distinct category to include all CAM medical systems. Andersen’s health care Utilization Model (HUM), which holds that health service use is a function of predisposing, enabling, needs …

Initiating A Peer Support Program For Parents Of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder In Richland And Lexington Counties, Danielle P. Simmons

Theses and Dissertations

Objective: To initiate a parenting support program for parents of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in Richland and Lexington Counties. Background: Parents of children with ASD have increased stress and a poorer sense of well-being relative to parents of children with typical development. This parent population in Richland and Lexington Counties identified lack of support as a major stressor. The parenting support model initiated (e.g. Parent to Parent program) is an evidence-based intervention used to provide peer support to parents of children with ASD. The training of veteran parents is essential in the development and initiation of a Parent …

Background

•Vitamin D deficiency has recently been posited as an important factor in the pathogenesis of restless leg syndrome.

•We evaluated the association between vitamin D deficiency and limb movements and sleep architecture in a pediatric sample.

Methods

•This is a retrospective analysis of a single institution sleep program looking at all patients who underwent overnight polysomnogram and 25-OH vitamin D within 60 days of doing the sleep study between January 2015 and October 2017. •Those with sleep apnea (Central Apnea Index >5/hr or Obstructive Apnea Hypopnea Index >2/ hr) were excluded. Results •There were a total of 83 children …

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

Purpose: This study examined survival rates of multi-surface composite restorations and stainless steel crowns (SSCs) placed by students in a pediatric dental clinic as well as the length of time it takes for restorations to be replaced with stainless steel crowns. Study design: Data from electronic dental records for all children with at least one 2-surface composite restorations or SSCs on a primary first or second molar from January 1, 2007 to September 30, 2015 were analyzed. The primary outcome was the time to a new restoration or SSC on the same tooth, with time to a crown as a …

The Effect Of Tackling Training On Head Accelerations In Youth American Football, Eric Schussler, Richard J. Jagacinski, Susan E. White, Ajit M. Chaudhari, John A. Buford, James A. Onate Jan 2018

The Effect Of Tackling Training On Head Accelerations In Youth American Football, Eric Schussler, Richard J. Jagacinski, Susan E. White, Ajit M. Chaudhari, John A. Buford, James A. Onate

Rehabilitation Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: Many organizations have introduced frameworks to reduce the incidence of football related concussions through proper equipment fitting, coach education, and alteration of tackling technique.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of training in a vertical, head up tackling style on the number of head accelerations experienced while tackling in a controlled laboratory situation. The authors hypothesized that training in a head up tackling technique would reduce the severity of head acceleration experienced by participants.

Design: Controlled Laboratory Study.

Methods: Twenty-four participants (11.5 ± 0.6 years old, 60.5 ± 2.2 in, 110 ± 18.4 lbs.) …

Individual Differences In Music Discrimination And Their Relation To Reading And Reading-Related Skills In Children, Elaina C. Hill Jan 2018

Individual Differences In Music Discrimination And Their Relation To Reading And Reading-Related Skills In Children, Elaina C. Hill

Theses and Dissertations

Research suggests that there may be a relationship between music and reading. Some researchers have found that musical rhythm is related to reading in children, while others have found that it is musical pitch and not rhythm that correlates with reading. Prosody is the melodic element of language that encompasses both pitch and rhythm. In the past, these have been studied separately. In the present study, we analyzed pitch and rhythm discrimination skills, phonological awareness, prosody and reading in thirty-nine seven and eight year old children. We predicted that music and reading skills would be related, and that prosody would …

Changes In The 2017 Pediatric Hypertension Clinical Guidelines., Bonita Falkner Jan 2018

Changes In The 2017 Pediatric Hypertension Clinical Guidelines., Bonita Falkner

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

The clinical practice guidelines on diagnosis and management of high blood pressure in children and adolescents have been periodically modified and updated since the original publication in 1977.1 Since the last pediatric blood pressure guideline was published in 2004, known as the Fourth Report,2 the literature on child BP and hypertension has expanded considerably. There has been a recognized need to update the Fourth Report for several years. However, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) who sponsored previous pediatric BP guidelines announced that NHLBI would no longer sponsor development of new clinical guidelines.3 Subsequently, in 2014 the American …

Design, Implementation And Evaluation Of The Impact Of A Body Image Professional Development Program For Early Childhood Educators, Karen Lombardi Jan 2018

Design, Implementation And Evaluation Of The Impact Of A Body Image Professional Development Program For Early Childhood Educators, Karen Lombardi

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Poor body image is a serious public health concern globally, and may lead to the development of poor mental and physical health, as well as eating disorders. Body image concerns were once believed to arise during puberty, though it is now reported children as young as three years of age present with such problems. Early intervention is therefore an important strategy to improve mental and physical health outcomes for very young children, and educators are an obvious conduit to build confidence, self-esteem and resilience of such children. In order for them to adequately fulfil this role, educators must first understand …
