Attentional Vs. Intentional Biases In Hand Movements; Hand-Specific Coupling & Bimanual Reaching, Gavin Buckingham, David Carey
Attentional Vs. Intentional Biases In Hand Movements; Hand-Specific Coupling & Bimanual Reaching, Gavin Buckingham, David Carey
Gavin Buckingham
Most of the population is dextral, showing a clear preference for performing the vast majority of tasks with their right hand. Peters (1981) suggested that an asymmetrical bias in attention (toward the right hand in right handers) could account for many manual asymmetries in bimanual task performance, with the left hand unable to perform the attentionally demanding portion of the task. Likewise, Honda (1982) demonstrated preferential monitoring of the dominant hand during a bimanual reaching task. Recent evidence has also shown an intentional (i.e. output related motor attention) bias toward the dominant hand (Bestelmeyer & Carey, 2004), another possible factor …

A Spatial-Temporal Approach To Surveillance Of Prostate Cancer Disparities In Population Subgroups, Chiehwen Ed Hsu
A Spatial-Temporal Approach To Surveillance Of Prostate Cancer Disparities In Population Subgroups, Chiehwen Ed Hsu
Chiehwen Ed Hsu
Prostate cancer mortality disparities exist among racial/ethnic groups in the United States, yet few studies have explored the spatiotemporal trend of the disease burden. To better understand mortality disparities by geographic regions over time, the present study analyzed the geographic variations of prostate cancer mortality by three Texas racial/ethnic groups over a 22-year period. Methods: The Spatial Scan Statistic developed by Kulldorff et al was used. Excess mortality was detected using scan windows of 50% and 90% of the study period and a spatial cluster size of 50% of the population at risk. Time trend was analyzed to examine the …

Building Bridges-GP-Team (Building Bridges-Team; Wilson et al., 2004c) is a variation of the Building Bridges to General Practice: GPs in Schools program (Building Bridges-GP; Wilson et al., 2004a), which promotes consultation with health care professionals who are local and available for rural and regional adolescent’ consultation. The first major component of Building Bridges-GP-Team involves structured health professional training that provides knowledge in three basic areas: (1) adolescents’ help seeking barriers and ways to address barriers in primary health care; (2) developmental issues relevant to adolescent’ help seeking; and (3) classroom management, presentation strategies, and elementary teaching skills. Training is based …

Synergistic Induction Of Ahr Regulated Genes In Developmental Toxicity From Co-Exposure To Two Model Pahs In Zebrafish, Alicia R. Timme-Laragy, Crystal J. Cockman, Cole W. Matson, Richard T. Di Giulio

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are pollutants created by the incomplete combustion of carbon, and are increasing in the environment largely due to the burning of fossil fuels. PAHs occur as complex mixtures, and some combinations have been shown to cause synergistic developmental toxicity in fish embryos, characterized by pericardial edema and craniofacial malformations. Previous studies have indicated that in the zebrafish model, this toxicity is mediated by the aryl hydrocarbon receptor 2 (AHR2), and enhanced by inhibition of CYP1A activity. In this study, we further examined this interaction of the model PAH and AHR agonist beta-naphthoflavone (BNF) with and without …

Depressive Symptoms And Help-Seeking Intentions In Young People., Coralie J. Wilson
Coralie J Wilson
Whether the help-negation effect as demonstrated for suicidal thoughts was also evident for depressive symptoms was investigated in three studies of young people from diverse urban areas. The studies comprised a large sample of younger high school students (years 7-10), a sample of older high school students (years 8-12), and first year university students. A self-report questionnaire that measured help-seeking intentions, prior help-seeking experiences, and depression was administered. Results revealed the strongest inverse association between level of depressive symptoms was with intentions to seek help from parents across all three samples. There was a consistent trend for students to report …

During the National Aeronautics and Space Ad- ministration (NASA) Intercontinental Chemical Transport Experiment, Phase B (INTEX-B), in the spring of 2006, air- borne measurements were made in the United States Pacific Northwest of the major inorganic ions and the water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) of submicron (PM 1 . 0 ) aerosol. An atmospheric trajectory (HYSPLIT) and a Lagrangian particle dispersion model (Flexpart) quantifying source contributions for carbon monoxide (CO) were used to segregate air masses into those of primarily Asian influence ( > 75% Asian CO) or North American influence ( > 75% North American CO). Of the measured compounds, fine particle …

When And How Do Young People Seek Professional Help For Mental Health Problems?, Coralie J. Wilson
When And How Do Young People Seek Professional Help For Mental Health Problems?, Coralie J. Wilson
Coralie J Wilson
Despite the high prevalence of mental health problems and disorders that develop in adolescence and early adulthood, young people tend to not seek professional help. Young men and young people from Indigenous and ethnic minority groups tend to be those most reluctant to seek help. Young people are more inclined to seek help for mental health problems if they: have some knowledge about mental health issues and sources of help; feel emotionally competent to express their feelings; and have established and trusted relationships with potential help providers. Young people are less likely to seek help if they: are experiencing suicidal …

Molecular Targets For Antiepileptic Drug Development, Brian S. Meldrum, Michael A. Rogawski
Michael A. Rogawski
This review considers how recent advances in the physiology of ion channels and other potential molecular targets, in conjunction with new information on the genetics of idiopathic epilepsies, can be applied to the search for improved antiepileptic drugs (AEDs). Marketed AEDs predominantly target voltage-gated cation channels (the alpha subunits of voltage-gated Na+ channels and also T-type voltage-gated Ca2+ channels) or influence GABA-mediated inhibition. Recently, alpha2-delta voltage-gated Ca2+ channel subunits and the SV2A synaptic vesicle protein have been recognized as likely targets. Genetic studies of familial idiopathic epilepsies have identified numerous genes associated with diverse epilepsy syndromes, including genes encoding Na+ …

Effects Of Support On The Initiation And Duration Of Breastfeeding, Sara L. Gill, Elizabeth Reifsnider, Joseph F. Lucke
Joseph Lucke
Researchers attempted to increase the initiation of breastfeeding and its duration to 6 months among a group of low-income, Hispanic women through an intervention program which included prenatal education and home based postpartum support. All participants were telephoned after delivery to determine infant feeding method. Duration of breastfeeding was determined by counting the number of days from initiation to the last day the baby was put to the breast. The Bayesian approach was used for the statistical analyses. In the intervention group, the propensity to initiate breastfeeding exceeded that of the control group. Results indicate the intervention group had twice …

Sunshine And Suicide At The Tropic Of Capricorn, São Paulo, Brazil, 1996–2004, Paulo A. Lotufo
Paulo A Lotufo
Several studies have confi rmed seasonal variation in suicide rates according to hours of sunshine. The suicide pattern was assessed in São Paulo, southeastern Brazil, at the tropic of Capricorn from 1996 to 2004. Poisson regression was employed to estimate parameters of seasonality, as well as to verify associations for each day between daylight duration and suicide. During the nine-year study period, there were 3,984 suicides (76.9% in men; median age=38.7 years old). Seasonal averages of suicides were similar, as were monthly averages. Poisson regression did not reveal any association between suicide rates and hours of sunshine (p=0.45) for both …

Controlled Language: The Next Big Thing In Translation?, Uwe Muegge
Uwe Muegge
Many global organizations are beginning to see the productivity indicators for their translation and localization processes reach a plateau. That’s an inevitable fact even for those organizations that use what’s currently billed as the latest and greatest in translation technology, such as translation memory with automated workflow components or globalization management systems. Even with these tools in place, making content available in multiple languages remains a very expensive and time-consuming proposition. For those looking for ways to reduce the cost of translation to the point where almost all materials that should be translation actually can be translated, controlled language may …
