Sustainability Of Western Kentucky University: An Examination Of Campus Environmental Policies, Performance And Potential For Change, Christian Ryan-Downing Dec 2007

Sustainability Of Western Kentucky University: An Examination Of Campus Environmental Policies, Performance And Potential For Change, Christian Ryan-Downing

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Institutions of higher learning are in a pivotal position to address the environmental problems that global society faces now, but response to this challenge requires transformation in priorities and practices. Recognizing the impacts that universities have on the environment and the social and economic costs associated with these impacts, institutions of higher learning are changing policies and management to become more sustainable. Sustainability is defined by the World Commission on Environment and Development as "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs" (1987). To evaluate the environmental impacts …

Auditory Hair Cell Regeneration And Gene Expression In Noise-Exposed Zebrafish (Danio Rerio), Julie Schuck Dec 2007

Auditory Hair Cell Regeneration And Gene Expression In Noise-Exposed Zebrafish (Danio Rerio), Julie Schuck

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Fishes are capable of regenerating sensory hair cells in the inner ear after exposure to excessive noise. However, a time course of auditory hair cell regeneration has not been characterized for zebrafish, nor has gene expression following noise exposure. To establish a time course of hair cell regeneration, adult zebrafish were exposed to a 100 Hz pure tone at 179 dB re 1 |u.Pa RMS for 36 hours, and then allowed to recover for 0 to 14 days before morphological analysis. Hair cell loss and recovery were determined using phalloidin and DAPI labeling to visualize hair cell bundles and nuclei, …

The Effects Of Human/Wildlife Conflict On The Potential For Community-Based Ecotourism In The Kasigau Region Of Southeast Kenya, Natalie Mountjoy Dec 2007

The Effects Of Human/Wildlife Conflict On The Potential For Community-Based Ecotourism In The Kasigau Region Of Southeast Kenya, Natalie Mountjoy

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Many believe community-based ecotourism (CBE) can assist in conservation efforts and community development; however, little research has been done to assess the potential of CBE in a specific region. As part of a large, long-term, international research project, I define three problematic areas that may impede successful CBE efforts in the Kasigau location of southeast Kenya: bushmeat utilization, community attitudes and wildlife abundance. Samples of meat purchased from butcheries and meat markets are identified to species using molecular analysis, community attitudes are ascertained via written social surveys and transect sampling methods are used to determine the relative abundance and diversity …

Study Design. Cross-sectional survey among athletes competing at the collegiate level in basketball, swimming, and track and field, as well as a matched nonathletic control group. Objective. To compare the prevalence of low back pain between sports: basketball, swimming, and track and field, as well as nonathletic control group. Summary of Background Data. With conflicting reports, it is not clear whether athletes are at higher risk for low back pain when compared to nonathletic counterparts. Some literature has found that low back pain was less common in former elite athletes when compared to nonathletes; however, much of the literature supports …

An Examination Of The Role Of Anxiety And Obsessive-Compulsive Features In Muscle Dysmorphia Symptomatology, Christopher Chandler Dec 2007

An Examination Of The Role Of Anxiety And Obsessive-Compulsive Features In Muscle Dysmorphia Symptomatology, Christopher Chandler

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Although Muscle Dsymorphia (MD) has received more attention in recent years, it still lacks an official classification. The current study incorporates trait anxiety and obsessive-compulsive features into an etiological model of MD in the hopes of establishing them as reliable predictors of such MD symptomatology as drive for muscularity, social physique anxiety, and negative body attitude (self). This model was based upon previous research that has linked trait anxiety and obsessive-compulsive features to eating disorders (ED). In this model, it was predicted that trait anxiety and obsessive-compulsive features would predict overall MD symptomatology, drive for muscularity, social physique anxiety, and …

The Environmental Factors Regulating The Distribution Of Crayfish In The Upper Green River Basin Kentucky, Usa, Eva Ngulo Dec 2007

The Environmental Factors Regulating The Distribution Of Crayfish In The Upper Green River Basin Kentucky, Usa, Eva Ngulo

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Despite the importance of crayfish in aquatic systems there are major issues threatening their conservation, including invasive species, habitat alterations, and species with small distributions or have limited geographical ranges. There is limited information regarding native range, habitat requirements, life histories and biological interactions between crayfish species. In order to examine the relationship between lotic crayfish assemblages and environmental variables at both the watershed and reach scales, data were collected from 46 stream segments in the Upper Green River Basin of Kentucky, U.S.A. An independent sample t-test compared crayfish densities between segments with gravel - small cobble, and large cobble …

Writing The World: Ursula K. Le Guin And Margaret Atwood’S Literary Contributions To Ecofeminism, Melissa Messer Oct 2007

Writing The World: Ursula K. Le Guin And Margaret Atwood’S Literary Contributions To Ecofeminism, Melissa Messer

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Along with the philosophical writings of ecofeminism’s greatest proponents and critics, the growth of ecofeminist philosophy has relied heavily on fiction writers. The term ecofeminism was coined in 1975, and the following year ecofeminism found fertile ground for exploration and growth in March Peircy’s science fiction novel, Woman on the Edge of Time (1976). The social, academic, and literary trends leading up to the emergence of ecofeminism, however, began well before 1975. Both Ursula K. Le Guin and Margaret Atwood are speculative fiction authors whose work before and after 1975 examines important ecofeminist topics and contributes to the growth of …

Validity Of The Clinical Assessment Of Depression With The Brief Symptom Inventory, Carlie West Aug 2007

Validity Of The Clinical Assessment Of Depression With The Brief Symptom Inventory, Carlie West

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Depression is a disorder frequently noted in college students that can affect multiple aspects of one's life, ranging from physical health issues to interpersonal relationship difficulties. Therefore, it is imperative that the depressive symptoms of college students be identified, evaluated, and treated. This investigation explored the validity of a newly published self-report narrow-band measure of depression, the Clinical Assessment of Depression (CAD; Bracken & Howell, 2004) with an existing broad-band measure, the Brief Symptom Inventory (Derogatis, 1993). College students 18 to 52 years of age (n = 280) enrolled in undergraduate courses in psychology at a south central Kentucky university …

The Effects Of Intensity Level And Expertise On Attentional Focus During Exercise, Diana Gieske Aug 2007

The Effects Of Intensity Level And Expertise On Attentional Focus During Exercise, Diana Gieske

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

An important goal of exercise psychology is to identify factors that influence exercise adherence. More than half of Americans do not get the physical activity that doctors recommend for maintaining or improving a healthy lifestyle. Attentional focus during exercise has been identified as one casual factor with regard to exercise adherence. Attentional focus has traditionally oeen defined as associative or dissociative (Morgan & Pollock, 1977). Association implies that an exerciser's attention is focused on how his or her body is reacting to the exercise (such as sweating, muscle soreness, and breathing) or on things such as pace and split-times. Dissociation …

Some Barriers To Development In Cameroon, Kenya And Swaziland, Matthew Moore Aug 2007

Some Barriers To Development In Cameroon, Kenya And Swaziland, Matthew Moore

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

In the study of development, researchers attempt to identify and measure the independent variables believed to influence economic growth and social development indicators in countries throughout the world. These researchers employ quantitative cross-national research methods, also known as the variable-oriented approach, while others may pursue a more case-oriented approach and examine a handful of countries employing a historical-comparative method. Education is a variable that has been identified in both of these research traditions to be positively related to the development of a country. However, when the effects of education on development are examined cross-nationally, it is clear that the countries …

The Whitehead Link On The Cubic Lattice, Elizabeth Haynes Aug 2007

The Whitehead Link On The Cubic Lattice, Elizabeth Haynes

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The cubic lattice is a graph in Â3 where the vertices are points with integer coordinates and edges are unit length line segments parallel to the x-, y-, or z-axis. A step is a line segment that connects one vertex to a neighboring vertex one unit away in the x-, y-, or z-direction. This thesis will show that the Whitehead Link needs at least 34 steps to be embedded on the cubic lattice.

P27 Expression In Endothelin-1 Stimulated Mitogenesis, Joseph Kiriu Aug 2007

P27 Expression In Endothelin-1 Stimulated Mitogenesis, Joseph Kiriu

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Bovine corneal endothelial cells (BCECs) have been shown in our lab to synthesize and secrete endothelin-1 (ET-1). The endothelin-1 binds ETA receptors, this elevates intracellular calcium, stimulate DNA replication and cell division. This investigation explores ET-l's role as a mitogenic factor in corneal endothelial cells and addresses whether mitogenic activity is mediated through the cyclin dependent kinase inhibitor p27. BCEC were isolated from bovine eyes and grown in DMEM-10% serum in a 5% C02, 37° C incubator. Confluent cultures of BCEC were incubated for 24 hours with lOOnM Endothelin-1, luM BQ123 and BQ123 +100nM Endothelin-1 and some left untreated. Total …

The Effect Of Ecological Gradients On The Fish Assemblages Of The Green And Tradewater River Basins Of Kentucky, Brian Lewis May 2007

The Effect Of Ecological Gradients On The Fish Assemblages Of The Green And Tradewater River Basins Of Kentucky, Brian Lewis

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The composition of lotic assemblages is influenced by many landscape factors. Foremost among these are basin geomorphology, fluvial and substrate characteristics, stream size, and land use. The primary purpose of this investigation was to determine if fish assemblages within Kentucky's Green River and Tradewater River Basins were associated with local scale environmental gradients and, if so, which gradients were the most important in shaping fish assemblages and which fish species were most closely associated with these gradients. A secondary purpose was to determine which regionalization or characterization strategy best segregated streams within the study area according to fish assemblages. Eighty-eight …

Conservation Studies Of Insect Cave Faunas In Mammoth Cave National Park And Ghana, West Africa, Chris Dewildt May 2007

Conservation Studies Of Insect Cave Faunas In Mammoth Cave National Park And Ghana, West Africa, Chris Dewildt

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

As part of a long term ecological monitoring effort at Mammoth Cave National Park, a blind cave beetle, Neaphaenops tellkampfi, was collected and data on populations trends gathered from September 2005 through December 2006 in Great Onyx Cave. The sex and age of each individual in each of 15 sites were determined and density trends of the entire population was measured. The species was chosen due to its role as an indicator species, since potential anthropogenic threats to the environment can be detected via population response. This was the initial implementation of a new monitoring method and a test of …

Assimilation Into A Therapeutic Community For Substance-Abusing Women, Joni Furlong May 2007

Assimilation Into A Therapeutic Community For Substance-Abusing Women, Joni Furlong

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Therapeutic communities provide structure, support and a safe living environment for individuals attempting to recover from addiction. Using peer influence, counseling, education, self-help groups, and case management, they assist residents in conforming to social norms and developing effective coping mechanisms while remaining drug-free. Prior studies have consistently demonstrated the effectiveness of these programs. But, why are they effective for some and not others? This study explored the residents1 backgrounds and the methods employed by them to assimilate into the therapeutic community, the recovering community, and then society at large. The data confirmed my suspicion that the women's ability to conform …

Phylogenetic Analysis Of The Cetonini Of The New World (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Cetoninae), Jesus Orozeo May 2007

Phylogenetic Analysis Of The Cetonini Of The New World (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Cetoninae), Jesus Orozeo

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The American genera of Cetoniini (Coleoptera: Cetoniinae) are analyzed. Fifty-eight morphological characters of seventy two taxa, including Cetoniini from the entire world and other representative tribes of Cetoniinae, were included in a phylogenetic analysis and studied under the parsimony criterion. The Cetoniini, a tribe including species from all continents, is monophyletic and appears supported by two homoplastic characters: the elytra-thorax articulation in a glove-like shape and the mesosternal process basally compressed and apically expanded in shape. No clade supporting a hypothesis of common ancestry for the American species was found. Of the traditionally defined genera in the American continents only …

Analysis Of Gene Expression In Mouse Brains During Toxoplasma Gondii Infection, Yi Zhou Apr 2007

Analysis Of Gene Expression In Mouse Brains During Toxoplasma Gondii Infection, Yi Zhou

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Previous studies in our laboratory have shown that dietary supplementation with antioxidants is harmful during murine infection with the protozoan parasite, Toxoplasma gondii, which causes toxoplasmosis in humans. Dietary supplementation with vitamin E and selenium was shown to increase tissue cyst number, tissue pathology, and weight loss during T. gondii infection. The goal of the present study was to determine the impact of diet on global gene expression in the brains of infected and non-infected mice and to identify the major genes that are differentially expressed, determine their function, and discover the molecular pathways in which these genes participate. Whole …
