Protocol For Determining Fertility While Breastfeeding And Not In Cycles, Richard Fehring, Mary Barron, Mary Schneider

Richard J Fehring

A protocol was developed and evaluated for nonovulating breastfeeding women to determine potential fertility with an electronic hormonal fertility monitor. The amount of required abstinence (i.e., days of potential fertility) through the first menstrual cycle indicated by the fertility monitor was significantly lower (17% of the total days) compared with the amount of abstinence (50% of the total days) indicated by the self-observation of cervical mucus.

Objectives: The aims of the study were: (i) to extend our linkage analysis of chromosome 1q microsatellite markers in predominately migraine with aura pedigrees and (ii) to test the novel FHM-2 ATP1A2 gene for involvement in these migraine affected pedigrees and a previous pedigree (MF14) showing evidence of linkage of markers to C1q31.

Methods: A chromosome 1 scan (31 markers) was performed in 21 multiplex pedigrees affected predominately with migraine with aura (MA). The known FHM-2 ATP1A2 gene mutations were tested, by sequencing, for the involvement in MA and migraine without aura (MO) in these pedigrees. Sequencing was performed in …

An Examination Of Ms Candidate Genes Identified As Differentially Regulated In Multiple Sclerosis Plaque Tissue, Using Absolute And Comparative Real-Time Q-Pcr Analysis, L. Tajouri, A. Melllick, A. Tourtellotte, R. Nagra, L. Griffiths Jun 2005

Nagra, L. Griffiths

Lotti Tajouri

In our laboratory, we have developed methods in real-time detection and quantitative-polymerase chain reaction (Q-PCR) to analyse the relative levels of gene expression in post mortem brain tissues. We have then applied this method to examine differences in gene activity between normal white matter (NWM) and plaque tissue from multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. Genes were selected based on their association with pathology and through identification by previously conducted global gene expression analysis. Plaque tissue was obtained from secondary progressive (SP) patients displaying chronic active, as well as acute pathologies; while NWM from the same location was obtained from age- and …

Downward Delegation Of Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator Decision-Making In A Restricted-Resource Environment: The Pitfalls Of Bedside Rationing, Christopher Simpson, Barry Hoffmaster, Paul Dorian May 2005

Downward Delegation Of Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator Decision-Making In A Restricted-Resource Environment: The Pitfalls Of Bedside Rationing, Christopher Simpson, Barry Hoffmaster, Paul Dorian

C. Barry Hoffmaster

Implantable cardioverter defibrillators have been shown to reduce all-cause mortality in some patient populations at risk of sudden death. New Canadian guidelines recommend implantable cardioverter defibrillator therapy for these patients. However, the need for these devices exceeds the funded volumes in many Canadian jurisdictions. As a result, rationing of this resource has been necessary. While rationing at the macro (Ministry of Health) and meso (hospital) levels has achieved some level of acceptance by society, the responsibility for the decisions taken at the micro (individual) patient level actually rests with the physician at the bedside. This 'bedside rationing' creates a moral …

Occupational Exposure To Snowmobile Emission At Yellowstone National Park, Wendy Campbell, Ryan Morris, Dale Stephenson, Terry Spear Feb 2005

Occupational Exposure To Snowmobile Emission At Yellowstone National Park, Wendy Campbell, Ryan Morris, Dale Stephenson, Terry Spear

Dale J. Stephenson

In recent years, regulations regarding snowmobile recreation in Yellowstone National Park have become more restrictive. New regulations limit the number of snowmobiles entering the park, restrict the engine type, and require that all riders must utilize a licensed guide. Given these regulations, it is hypothesized that occupational exposures to the combustion products from snowmobile exhaust have decreased. This research project performed occupational exposure monitoring of National Park Service Employees while working at the West Entrance to Yellowstone National Park during the 2004-2005 winter season. Products of snowmobile exhaust including carbon monoxide, nitrous oxides, volatile organic compounds, fine particulates, and noise …

New Low And High Tech Calendar Methods Of Family Planning, Richard Fehring Dec 2004

New Low And High Tech Calendar Methods Of Family Planning, Richard Fehring

Richard J Fehring

Calendar-based methods are not usually considered effective or useful methods of family planning among health professionals. However, new “high-” and “low”-tech calendar methods have been developed, which are easy to teach, to use, and may be useful in helping couples avoid pregnancy. The low-tech models are based on a fixed-day calendar system. The high-tech models are based on monitoring urinary metabolites of female reproductive hormones. Both systems have high levels of satisfaction. This article describes these new models of family planning and the research on their effectiveness. The author proposes a new algorithm for determining the fertile phase of the …

The Effect Of Depression On Balance Decline In Mature Women, Jennifer Nitz, Nancy Low Choy, Meredith Ogilvie Dec 2004

The Effect Of Depression On Balance Decline In Mature Women, Jennifer Nitz, Nancy Low Choy, Meredith Ogilvie

Nancy Low Choy

Depression has been identified as a risk factor for falls, and a change in balance ability over time has yet to be investigated. This study aimed to identify if, over a 3-year period, balance ability changed in 26 women who were on medication for depression, compared to 26 non-depressed women. The two groups were matched for age, number of co-morbidities, activity level, medications, and height. All participants were simultaneously enrolled in a larger, longitudinal study of ageing. Balance measures included the Functional Reach (FR) test, Lateral Reach (LR) test, Step Test (ST), Timed Up and Go, and the Modified Clinical …

Investigating The Effects Of Communication Problems On Caregiver Burden, Marie Savundranayagam, M. Hummert, R. Montgomery Dec 2004

Investigating The Effects Of Communication Problems On Caregiver Burden, Marie Savundranayagam, M. Hummert, R. Montgomery

Marie Y Savundranayagam

Objectives. The goal of this study was to explore the relationship between communication problems associated with dementia and caregiver burden, within the context of problem behaviors and cognitive and functional abilities of the care recipient.

Methods. A scale on communication problems associated with dementia was developed and administered to 89 family caregivers. Participants also completed measures of care-recipient cognitive and functional status, problem behavior, and caregiver burden (demand, stress, and objective burden).

Results. Analyses using structural equation modeling showed that care-recipient cognitive and functional status indirectly predicted problem behaviors via communication problems. The status indicators also directly predicted demand burden. …

Variation In The Vitamin D Receptor Gene Is Associated With Multiple Sclerosis In An Austrlaian Population, Lotti Tajouri, Micky Ovcaric, Rob Curtain, Matthew Johnson, Lyn Griffiths, Peter Csurhes, Michael Pender, Rod Lea

Lotti Tajouri

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system (CNS) resulting in accumulating neurological disability. The disorder is more prevalent at higher latitudes. To investigate VDR gene variation using three intragenic restriction fragment length polymorphisms (Apa I, Tag I and Fok I) in an Australian MS case-control population. One hundred and four Australian MS patients were studied with patients classified clinically as Relapsing Remitting MS (RR-MS), Secondary Progressive MS (SP-MS) or Primary Progressive MS (PP-MS). Also, 104 age-, sex-, and ethnicity-matched controls were investigated as a comparative group. Our results show a significant difference of …
