Improving Social Work Practice With Persons Who Are Homeless And Mentally Ill, Carol T. Mowbray, Shirley P. Thrasher, Evan Cohen, Deborah Bybee

Despite a proliferation of programs targeted for persons who are homeless and mentally ill, few reports in the literature detail the challenges experienced or strategies utilized by workers, the majority of whom are social workers. The present study reports results from two focus group sessions held with staff running a model service intervention for this population at two separate sites. The methodology that was utilized quanitified results, allowing presentation of themes, as well as comparisons of the frequency of responses across categories and by site. Experience With Larangeal Mask Airway In Pakistani Patients, F A. Khan, M A. Afzal, R S. Kamal

One hundred and thirty seven adult patients undergoing peripheral surgery were studied regarding ease of larangeal mask airway (LMA) insertion, airway maintenance during surgery and complication encountered during insertion, maintenance and in the postoperative period. In a majority (84%) of patients, the airway was positioned correctly at the first attempt, 3% patients had mild laryngospasm at insertion and in 85% a good airway was obtained. No airway related problems were encountered intraoperatively. Two percent patients had laryngospasm on removal of LMA. Postoperatively, the complaint of sore throat and uvular trauma was seen in 4% cases.

วิเคราะห์งานวิจัยเกี่ยวกับสุกรของประเทศไทยที่ตีพิมพ์ระหว่างปี พ.ศ.2526 ถึง พ.ศ. 2538 รวม รวมทั้งหมด 399 เรื่อง ตามชนิดของปัญหา พบว่าส่วนใหญ่เป็นงานวิจัยเกี่ยวกับสุขภาพ และอาหารสัตว์ 40.8 และ 31.0% ตามลำดับ รองลงมาเป็นงานวิจัยเกี่ยวกับระบบสืบพันธุ์ และ การปรับปรุงพันธุ์ 11.7 และ 7.3% ตามลำดับ ขณะที่งานวิจัยด้านผลิตภัณฑ์สัตว์ การจัดการ และสภาพแวดล้อมรวมกับการตลาด มีเพียง 4.2, 3.4 และ 1.5% ตามลำดับ ส่วนประเภทของ งานวิจัย เป็นงานวิจัยทางคลินิกหรืองานวิจัยในหน่วยราชการ 37.7% งานวิจัยภาคสนาม 29.3% งานวิจัยในห้องปฏิบัติการ 26.7% และงานวิจัยเอกสารบทความปริทัศน์ 6.3% เมื่อจำแนก ตามคุณค่าของงานวิจัย เป็นงานวิจัยที่นำผลไปใช้ได้ทันที 56.4% งานวิจัยข้อมูลพื้นฐาน 36.6% งานวิจัยที่นำไปใช้ได้เมื่อปรับเล็กน้อย 5.2% และงานวิจัยประยุกต์ต้องวิจัยต่อ 1.7% ในอนาคต การวิจัยควรเน้นการศึกษาเกี่ยวกับการใช้เทคโนโลยีชีวภาพ ทั้งการผสมเทียม การปฏิสนธิ ในหลอดแก้วและการย้ายฝากตัวอ่อน โดยอยู่บนพื้นฐานของการปรับปรุงพันธุ์ ปรับทิศทางการวิจัยด้านอาหารสัตว์จากการวิจัยวัสดุเหลือใช้เพื่อทดแทนในอาหารสัตว์มาเป็นการวิจัยเพื่อเพิ่มผลผลิตของวัตถุดิบอาหารสัตว์โดยตรง ปัญหาสภาวะแวดล้อมต้องได้รับการศึกษาและ แก้ไขอย่างเร่งด่วน ส่วนปัญหาด้านการจัดการ การตลาด การพัฒนาผลิตภัณฑ์สัตว์ตลอดจน การควบคุมและกำจัดโรคระบาดที่สำคัญ ต้องทําการศึกษาอย่างต่อเนื่องต่อไป

วัคซีนป้องกันโรคนิวคาสเซิลเชื้อตาย ตอนที่ 1: วิธีการเตรียมวัคซีนป้องกันโรคนิวคาสเซิลเชื้อตายเสตรนที่ไม่รุนแรงและรงปานกลาง และผลข้างเคียงที่พบ, สมศักดิ์ ภัคภิญโญ, จิโรจน์ ศศิปรียจันทร์, นิวัตร จันทร์ศิริพรชัย

วัคซีนป้องกันโรคนิวคาสเซิลเชื้อเป็นเสตรนที่ไม่รุนแรง (ลาโซต้า) และแรงปานกลาง (เอ็มพี) ถูกนำมาฉีดไข่ฟัก อายุ 9 วัน แล้วนำเข้าตู้ฟักที่อุณหภูมิ 37% เป็นเวลา 50 ชม. เก็บของเหลวจากไข่ฟักมาตรวจระดับความแรงของไวรัส โดยแบ่งเป็น จำนวนไวรัสน้อยและจำนวนไวรัสมาก คือ 256 และ 512 จากนั้นนำมาเตรียมเป็นวัคซีนเชื้อตายได้ 4 กลุ่ม (กลุ่มที่ 1-4) คือ วัคซีนเชื้อตายเสตรนไม่รุนแรงจำนวนไวรัสน้อย (กลุ่ม 1) จำนวนไวรัสมาก (กลุ่ม 2) วัคซีนเชื้อตายเสตรนแรงปานกลางจำนวนไวรัสน้อย (กลุ่ม 3) และจำนวนไวรัสมาก (กลุ่ม 4) และวัคซีนเชื้อตายของบริษัท (กลุ่ม 5) โดยเปรียบเทียบในด้านคุณสมบัติทางกายภาพของวัคซีน ปฏิกริยาการตอบสนองของเนื้อเยื่อบริเวณที่ฉีดวัคซีนในตัวไก่ที่สังเกตด้วยตาเปล่าพบว่ามีความแตกต่างกันด้านความหนืดสัมพัทธ์ของวัคซีน วัคซีนทุกกลุ่มมีความคงตัวไม่มีการแยกชั้น พบปฏิกริยาการตอบสนองของเนื้อเยื่อบริเวณที่ฉีดวัคซีนในตัวไก่ที่สังเกตด้วย ตาเปล่าเฉพาะในกลุ่ม 3 เท่ากับ 100% (5/5)

ชนิดของแบคทีเรียในน้ำเชื้อสดและการใช้ยาปฏิชีวนะในการผลิตน้ำเชื้อแช่แข็ง, มุขดา รัตนภาสกร, รพีพรรณ เอื้อเวชนิกุล, จันทร์เพ็ญ สุวิมลธีระบุตร, ปราจีน วีรกุล

ตรวจการปนเปื้อนของเชื้อแบคทีเรียในน้ำเชื้อสด จำนวน 45 ตัวอย่าง พบเชื้อ ureaplasmas 87% (39/45) และ mycoplasmas 51% (23/45) ค่าพิสัย 10 ถึง 107 CCU/ml และ CFU/ml ตามลำดับ ไม่พบการปนเปื้อนของ Campylobacter และ Hemophillus somnus และคัดเลือกโคพ่อพันธุ์จำนวน 13 ตัว มารีดเก็บน้ำเชื้อสดและทํา การทดสอบโดยใช้ยาปฏิชีวนะ 3 ชนิดได้แก่ 1) Penicillin 1000 iu / ml + Streptomycin 1000 mg/ml (PS) 2) Gentamycin 250 mg/ml + Tylosin 50 mg/ml + Linco- spectin 150/300 mg/ml (GTLS) 3) Gentamycin 500 mg/ml, Tylosin 100 mg/ml + Linco-spectin 300/600 mg/ml (GTLS2) เปรียบเทียบการควบคุมปริมาณ การปนเปื้อนของเชื้อแบคทีเรีย พบว่า PS สามารถลดปริมาณแบคทีเรียที่เพาะจาก plate count agar ได้ดีกว่า GTLS1 และ GTLS2 (P<0.05) แต่ PS ไม่สามารถควบคุมการเจริญ ของเชื้อ ureaplasmas ได้ โดยพบว่ายังมีการปนเปื้อนในอัตราที่สูง 83% (10/12) และ ปริมาณการปนเปื้อนในแต่ละตัวอย่างไม่ลดลง (102 ถึง 106 CCU/ml) แต่สามารถ ควบคุมการเจริญของ mycoplasmas ได้บ้าง โดยพบมีการปนเปื้อนเพียง 29% (2/7) แต่ ปริมาณการปนเปื้อนยังคงค่อนข้างสูง (10 ถึง 10 CFU/ml) GTLS1 สามารถควบคุม การเจริญของ ureaplasmas และ mycoplasmas ได้โดย ureaplasmas พบการปนเปื้อน 27% (3/11) (10 2 ถึง 103 CCU/ml) และสำหรับ mycoplasmas นั้นพบการปนเปื้อน 14% (1/7) (10 CFU/ml) GTLS2 สามารถหยุดยั้งการเจริญเติบโตของ ureaplasmas และ mycoplasmas ได้ถึง 100%

Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Patents

Compositions containing as the active ingredient a spin-trapping reagent, preferably α-phenyl butyl nitrone (PBN) or spin-trapping derivatives thereof, in a suitable pharmaceutical carrier for administration to a patient are disclosed for treating or preventing symptoms associated with aging or other conditions associated with oxidative tissue damage. Other spin-trapping agents can also be used, such as 5,5-dimethyl pyrroline N-oxide (DMPO) or α-(4-pyridyl 1-oxide)-N-tert-butylnitrone (POBN), and other spin-trapping derivatives thereof. These compositions and methods are useful in the treatment of age-related disorders, pre-surgical and/or pre-anesthetic preparation or administration of chemotherapeutic agents, and in the treatment of disorders or trauma of the brain, …

Helminths Of The Southwestern Toad, Bufo Microscaphus, Woodhouse's Toad, Bufo Woodhousii (Bufonidae), And Their Hybrids From Central Arizona, Stephen R. Goldberg, Charles R. Bursey, Keith B. Malmos, Brian K. Sullivan, Hay Cheam

Great Basin Naturalist

The gastrointestinal tracts, lungs, and urinary bladders from 77 Bufo microscaphus, 61 Bufo woodhousii, and 8 of their hybrids were examined for helminths. One species of trematode (Glypthelmins quieta), 1 species of cestode (Distoichometra bufonis), and 5 species of nematodes (Aplectana incerta, A. itzocanensis, Rhabdias americanus, Physaloptera sp., and Physocephalus sp.) were found. The greatest prevalence (41%) and mean intensity (231.7) were recorded for Aplectana incerta in Bufo woodhousii. It appears hybrids harbor fewer parasites than either parent species.

We examined the relationship between trait measures of general appraisal and test anxiety, state measures of stress appraisals, affect, and intrusive cognition, andperformance measures on two cognitive tests (mental math and Raven matrices). Participants were randomly assigned to threat, challenge, or control conditions that were created by manipulating both primary and secondary appraisals. We predicted that the threat condition would lead to more negative affect, stress appraisals, intrusive cognitions, and more errors. CD18 is a subunit for three β2 integrin molecules (Mac-1, p150, 95, LFA-1), which are expressed on the plasma membrane of neutrophils. These molecules mediate passage of neutrophils into sites of infection. In children and animals that lack CD18 expression, neutrophil infiltration is impaired in most tissues. However, in lung, CD18-neutrophils have been identified in the airway spaces during spontaneous episodes of pneumonia. A major challenge for using native or modified T cell epitopes to induce or suppress immunity relates to poor localization of peptides to antigen presenting cells (APCs) in vivo. In this study, we demonstrate enhanced presentation of antigenic and antagonistic peptides by targeting them to the type I Fc receptor for IgG (F(c)gammaRI, CD64) on human monocytes. A Th epitope of tetanus toxoid, TT830, and the antagonistic peptide for TT830, TT833S, were genetically grafted into the constant region of the heavy chain of the humanized anti-CD64 mAb 22 and expressed as monovalent fusion proteins, Fab22-TT830 and Fab22-TT833S. Previously, model systems were developed in our laboratory to study murine immune responses to the 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine Pnu-Imune, both in vivo and in vitro (M. Garg and B. Subbarao, Infect. Immun. 60:2329-2336, 1992; M. Garg, A. M. Kaplan, and S. Bondada, J. Immunol. 152: 1589-1596, 1994). Using these systems, we found that aged mice did not respond to the vaccine in vivo or in vitro. Cell separation studies showed that the unresponsiveness of the aged spleen cells to the vaccine was not due to an intrinsic B-cell defect or to T-cell-mediated immunosuppression but resulted from an accessory cell …
