Poverty And Health Outcomes Among Hispanics In Massachusetts, Christopher Christian Oct 1991

Poverty And Health Outcomes Among Hispanics In Massachusetts, Christopher Christian

Gastón Institute Publications

The Hispanic population of Massachusetts is now close to becoming the largest ethnic minority group in the state. The 1990 statewide Census count found that the Hispanic population doubled in the past ten years and now comprises 4.8% of the total state population (287,349 residents) as compared to 2.5% in 1980.

Growth in the Hispanic population has not been coupled with advancements in health status. Hispanic residents are disproportionately affected by many adverse health outcomes, such as high infant mortality, a high incidence of substance abuse, sexually transmitted diseases, homicides, AIDS, and other chronic illnesses. This paper highlights some of …

Maternal Linguistic Input To Toddlers With Slow Expressive Language Development, Rhea Paul, Terril J. Elwood Oct 1991

Maternal Linguistic Input To Toddlers With Slow Expressive Language Development, Rhea Paul, Terril J. Elwood

Communication Disorders Faculty Publications

Maternal speech styles to children between 20 and 34 months of age who were slow to acquire expressive language were compared to those of mothers with normally speaking toddlers. Aspects of the mothers' speech examined included use of various sentence types (declaratives, negative, questions, etc.); the mother's lexical contingency with regard to the child's utterance; mother's use of pragmatic functions such as requests, comments, and conversational devices; and the mother's use of topic management. Results revealed that mothers of toddlers with slow language development are different from mothers of normal speakers only in their frequency of use of lexical contingency …

1992 Beef Cattle Report, Darrell W. Nelson Oct 1991

1992 Beef Cattle Report, Darrell W. Nelson

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Economic efficiency of beef production to weaning and to slaughter was estimated in three groups, different in milk available (low, medium, and high) to the calves but the same in growth potential. Efficiency was the ratio of income to expenses. Income was derived from cull cows and calves at weaning or carcasses of calves fed to slaughter. Feed and non-feed expenses for the cowherd and for calves to weaning or to slaughter were included. Efficiencies were estimated assuming observed reproductive rates and energy requirements for maintenance, as well as for equal reproductive rates and equal requirements for maintenance in the …

The Evaluation Of The School-Based Flouride Mouthrinse Program In A Fluoridated Community, Motoki Nakanaga Oct 1991

The Evaluation Of The School-Based Flouride Mouthrinse Program In A Fluoridated Community, Motoki Nakanaga

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a school-based fluoride mouthrinse program in a fluoridated community. Such an evaluation is important because the effect of such programs may decrease over time due to the widespread use of fluoride.

Two elementary schools were chosen. One had a fluoride mouthrinse program: the other did not. The subjects were children in grades one and six. Their caries experience was examined using dft. dfs. DFT, and DFS scores.

There were no statistically significant differences between the two schools. The program had no significant effect in the community studied.

Translocation Of The Glucose Transporter Glut4 In Cardiac Myocytes Of The Rat., Jan W. Slot, Hans J. Geuze, Sander Gigengack, David E. James, Gustav E. Lienhard Sep 1991

Translocation Of The Glucose Transporter Glut4 In Cardiac Myocytes Of The Rat., Jan W. Slot, Hans J. Geuze, Sander Gigengack, David E. James, Gustav E. Lienhard

Dartmouth Scholarship

The insulin-regulated glucose transporter GLUT4 was immunolocalized in rat cardiac muscle under conditions of basal and stimulated glucose uptake, achieved by fasting and a combined exercise/insulin stimulus, respectively. In basal myocytes there was very little (less than 1%) GLUT4 in the different domains of the plasma membrane (sarcolemma, intercalated disk, and transverse tubular system). GLUT4 was localized in small tubulo-vesicular elements that occur predominantly near the sarcolemma and the transverse tubular system and in the trans-Golgi region. Upon stimulation approximately 42% of GLUT4 was found in the plasma membrane. Each domain of the plasma membrane contributed equally to this effect. …

Sertoli Cell Only Syndrome (Secos): Lessons From Case Studies, Jamsheer J Talati, Hizbullah Sheikh Sep 1991

Sertoli Cell Only Syndrome (Secos): Lessons From Case Studies, Jamsheer J Talati, Hizbullah Sheikh

Section of Urology

Between June 85 and December 87, 69 testicular biopsies were submitted for histopathological examination during investigation of infertility; ten (14%) patients had a Sertoli cell only syndrome. The history, clinical features, and hormonal profiles were analyzed in an attempt to categorize these patients on aetiological basis. Two followed treatment of malignancy--one by radiation for testicular cancer and one by cyclophosphamide for a lymphoma. One had unilateral cryptorchidism. Mumps was etiological factor in one patient. FSH levels determined in 6 patients were elevated in all suggesting a possible dependence of (sick) Sertoli cells on spermatogenic cells for production of inhibin. Alternative …

Actinobacillus Pleuropneumoniae-Induced Thymic Lesions In Mice And Pigs, D.L. Stine, M.J. Huether, Rodney A. Moxley, Subramaniam Srikumaran

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Actinobacillus pkuropneumoniae produces several hemolysins/cytotoxins that may be important in the pathogenesis of acute lesions. Little is known, however, about the role of these virulence factors in chronic disease or the carrier state. We investigated the effects of live bacterial infection and transthoracic injection of a sterile culture supernatant on primary lymphoid organs and lymphocyte populations. Transthoracic inoculation of mice or intranasal inoculation of pigs with virulent A. pleuropneumoniae serotypes 1 and 7 induced thymic cortical lymphoid necrosis. These lesions were reproduced in mice by transthoracic injection of a concentrated sterile culture supernatant. The cytotoxic effect of this culture supernatant …

Arkansas Cooperative Beef Bull Performance Test 1991, M. W. Eaton, A. E. Brown Jr., J. A. Hornsby, R. W. Parham, J. D. Shockey, W. C. Loe

Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Series

Performance testing of beef bulls was initiated to improve productivity of Arkansas beef cattle through breeding. This cooperative testing program provides cattlemen with reliable information for identifying animals with superior breeding value for the traits of production measured in the test. By using the information as a basis for herd sire selection, a breeder can greatly increase the chances of obtaining a bull that will sire rapid-gaining, more efficient, highquality calves. Such calves can increase profits for both the breeder and the feeder. This testing program provides information that is useful to financial institutes in arranging their lending programs and …

Expression Of A Human Cartilage Procollagen Gene (Col2a1) In Mouse 3t3 Cells., Leena Ala-Kokko, James Hyland, Carol Smith, Kari I. Kivirikko, Sergio A. Jimenez, Darwin J. Prockop

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

Expression in a recombinant system has been difficult to obtain for any of the major fibrillar collagens that require processing by eight or more post-translational enzymes. Here, two DNA constructs were designed so that the promoter region of the gene for the pro-alpha 1(I) chain of human type I procollagen drove expression of the human type II procollagen gene in mouse NIH 3T3 cells, a culture line that normally synthesizes type I procollagen but not any cartilage-specific protein such as type II procollagen. Both constructs were expressed as both mRNA and protein. In clones expressing the construct at high levels, …

Interaction Of Hypothalamic GabaA And Excitatory Amino Acid Receptors Controlling Heart Rate In Rats, Robert P. Soltis, Joseph A. Dimicco Aug 1991

Interaction Of Hypothalamic GabaA And Excitatory Amino Acid Receptors Controlling Heart Rate In Rats, Robert P. Soltis, Joseph A. Dimicco

Scholarship and Professional Work – COPHS

We have previously shown that microinjection of drugs that impair gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-mediated synaptic inhibition into the dorsomedial hypothalamus (DMH) of rats generates cardiovascular and behavioral changes that mimic the response to stress. The purpose of this study was to examine the role of excitatory amino acid (EAA) receptors in the DMH in generating the cardiovascular changes caused by withdrawal of local GABAergic inhibition in urethan-anesthetized rats. Local treatment of the DMH with the nonselective EAA antagonist kynurenic acid blocked or reversed the increases in heart rate and blood pressure caused by microinjection of the GABAA antagonists bicuculline methiodide (BMI) …

Communication And Socialization Skills At Ages 2 And 3 In "Late-Talking" Young Children, Rhea Paul, Shawn S. Looney, Pamela S. Dahm

Communication Disorders Faculty Publications

Twenty-one apparently normal children between 18 and 34 months of age with slow expressive language acquisition were compared to a group of normally speaking children matched for age, SES, and sex ratio, on the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales (Sparrow, Balla, & Cicchetti, 1984). The late talkers (LTs) scored significantly lower not only in expressive communication, but also in receptive communication and socialization. A follow-up study of the same subjects, seen at age 3, showed nearly half the 3-year-olds with a history of LT remained delayed in expressive communication and socialization, while one third remained behind in receptive language. The data …

Attitudinal Predictors In A Negligence Case, Therese Ann Astolfo Jul 1991

Attitudinal Predictors In A Negligence Case, Therese Ann Astolfo

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study addresses the use of attitude and personality variables as predictors of compensation and award in a personal injury suit. Safety seeking behavior and attitudes toward tort reform are introduced as case-specific factors that may predict this verdict decision. Two hundred registered voters were surveyed on scales measuring attitudes toward safety, tort reform, and psychiatrists. Subjects also indicated their demographic characteristics and the degree of compensation and amount of award they would render the plaintiff in a civil suit. Results indicated attitudinal variables were more predictive of compensation and award than were demographic variables. The implications of these findings …

The Effect Of Nutrition Education On The Nutrition Knowledge Of College Athletes, Maria Guadalupe Bermudez Jul 1991

The Effect Of Nutrition Education On The Nutrition Knowledge Of College Athletes, Maria Guadalupe Bermudez

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The relationship between nutrition and athletic performance has become a topic of increasing interest in college athletics. This study assessed the effect of nutrition education on the nutrition knowledge and dietary adequacy of female and male college athletes through a pre-test/post-test, control group design. Six weekly lessons were offered to the experimental groups. For female athletes, a two sample t-test indicated significant differences on gain scores for the experimental group (p
