Student Attitudes Toward Their Role As Patient Advocate, Jacquelyn Heinlein Graven May 1991

Student Attitudes Toward Their Role As Patient Advocate, Jacquelyn Heinlein Graven

Honors Projects

Patient advocacy is a role which has been identified as an important one for nurses. Numerous definitions, models, opinions and philosophical justification of advocacy as a nursing role are described in the literature. The importance of this role is obvious when considering the philosophical dimensions of advocacy. It has been suggested that the concept of advocacy may be the fundamental or theoretical foundation of nursing (Donahue, 1985; Gadow, 1980). Although the role has been discussed for many years there are few established guidelines for implementation and little research exists regarding the advocacy role. The purpose of this descriptive study is …

Multinational Validation Of Anxiety, Hopelessness, And Ineffective Airway Clearance, Richard Fehring, Teresa Fadden, Madeline Wake Apr 1991

Multinational Validation Of Anxiety, Hopelessness, And Ineffective Airway Clearance, Richard Fehring, Teresa Fadden, Madeline Wake

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

The effective use of nursing diagnosis internationally depends in part on incorporating language and cultural difference into the common language of nursing. International validation studies can provide a basis for this effort. This study tested three diagnoses—anxiety, hopelessness, and ineffective airway clearance—through multinational validation. The Diagnostic Content Validity (DCV) model was used to collect data from critical care nurses in six countries. Defining characteristics rated as critical (> .80) by the total sample were dyspnea for ineffective airway clearance and panic and nervousness for anxiety. No critical defining characteristics for hopelessness were identified. DCV ratios for …

Tympanic Infrared Thermometry For Fullterm And Preterm Neonates, Marianne Weiss Apr 1991

Tympanic Infrared Thermometry For Fullterm And Preterm Neonates, Marianne Weiss

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Tympanic infrared thermometry has been proposed as a safe, rapid, cost-effective, and reliable method of temperature taking. 1,2 Testing with adults and children have produced results supporting its use in clinical practice. In previous studies conducted with an adult population, excellent results for accuracy and precision were obtained.3,4 Studies of children have primarily focused on the use of tympanic thermometry for use in pediatric office and emergency room settings.5~6 Kenney et al.1 found tympanic thermometry to differ from rectal temperature by .06°C across all ages and by .02°C for subjects less than two months of age. Mean differences …

Relationships Among Perceived Stress, Trait Anger, Modes Of Anger Expression And Health Status Of College Men And Women, Sandra Thomas, R.L. Williams

Faculty Publications and Other Works -- Nursing

Relationships among perceived stress, trait anger (general propensity to become angry), modes of anger expression, and health status were examined in a sample of 720 college students, using Caplan's conceptualization of stress as the study's framework. Propensity toward anger was assessed by the 10-item form of the Trait Anger Scale (Spielberger et al.), modes of anger expression were assessed by the Framingham Anger Scales, perceived stress was operationalized by the Perceived Stress Scale (Cohen, Kamarck, and Mermelstein), and current health status was assessed by Ware's 9-item Current Health Scale. As hypothesized, stress was a positive correlate of trait anger and …

First-Line Nurse Administrators In Academe: How Are They Prepared, What Do They Do, And Will They Stay In Their Jobs?, Joy C. Princeton, Timothy M. Gaspar

Nursing Faculty Publications

This article examines the role characteristics, responsibilities, and anticipated career patterns of first-line nurse administrators employed in university-based nursing education programs throughout the nation. First-line administration is the first level on the administrative ladder, and these administrators are most frequently entitied department chairpersons; division, program, and level directors; or coordinators. This was an exploratory and descriptive research project, and the questions addressed were (1) How are first-line nurse administrators in academe formally educated and informally prepared for their administrative role? (2) What are the administrative competencies important for this administrative role? (3) What strains, conflicts, and work overload are associated …
