A Technique For Physiologically Age-Grading Female Stable Flies, Stomoxys Calcitrans (L.), P. J. Scholl Dec 1980

A Technique For Physiologically Age-Grading Female Stable Flies, Stomoxys Calcitrans (L.), P. J. Scholl

Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station

A method of dissection followed by staining was initiated to allow physiological age- grading based on ovarian development in order to more completely describe the physiological development of adult female stable flies [Stomoxys calcitrans (L. )]. The gonotrophic developmental continuum from a non-differentiated cell in teneral females to mature eggs at the time of oviposition was first arbitrarily divided into six stages by using distinct landmarks within the developing oocyte . Then, nulliparous, uniparous, and biparous+ females were differentiated on the basis of the presence or absence of stained follicular relics in the ovariole sheaths. The combination of the …

Beyond Conspecifics: Is Brer Rabbit Our Brother?, Gordon Burghardt, Harold Herzog

Experimentation Collection

Today, on many fronts, there is renewed interest in our relationship with nonhuman animals. Many factors have contributed to this concern. Environmental and ecological awareness has drawn public attention to the near extermination of many species and the detrimental effects of pollution, pesticides, and habitat destruction. The inefficiency of transmuting vegetable protein to meat has added to the traditional moral arguments of vegetarians. The widespread questioning of government support for basic research has been intertwined with suspicions about the use and worth of any studies on animals, even those purporting to help understand human medical and behavioral problems. New evidence …

Effects Of Analgesia On The Newborn, Linda Roe Nov 1980

Effects Of Analgesia On The Newborn, Linda Roe

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Obstetric analgesia and anesthesia is an important concern today. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of analgesia used in labor and delivery on the mother and newborn. The information obtained in this study evaluated the amount, time and types of analgesia and the effects on the mother and the newborn.

Previous research has indicated adverse effects of analgesia and anesthesia on both mother and newborn, but conclusive results have not been obtained. Depressed respiratory function, increased use of oxygen, and low Apgar scores are among the effects reported for the newborn. Decreased uterine function, decreased satisfaction …

A Field Investigation Of Meiofaunal Dispersal: Tidal Resuspension And Implications, Susan S. Bell, K. M. Sherman Oct 1980

A Field Investigation Of Meiofaunal Dispersal: Tidal Resuspension And Implications, Susan S. Bell, K. M. Sherman

Integrative Biology Faculty and Staff Publications

Presence of meiofauna in resuspended sediments was investigated in a tidal creek system employing a specially designed core sampler and quick freezing techniques. Forty core samples were taken during 4 successive ebb tides to determine the distribution of meiofauna in (a) overlying water; (b) resuspended sediment; and (c) undisturbed sediment fractions of each sample. Our experiments demonstrate that 13-44 % of the meiobenthic copepod subcommunity was present in overlying and resuspended sediment fractions, while only a small percentage of nematodes was found simultaneously in these layers. We suggest that selected meiofauna may disperse through tidally coupled mechanisms and that such …

The Impact Of Moral Theories On Cheating: Studies Of Emotion Attribution And Schema Activation, Richard A. Dienstbier, Lynn R. Kahle, Keith A. Willis, Gilbert B. Tunnell Sep 1980

The Impact Of Moral Theories On Cheating: Studies Of Emotion Attribution And Schema Activation, Richard A. Dienstbier, Lynn R. Kahle, Keith A. Willis, Gilbert B. Tunnell

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

This research series began as a test of an emotion-attribution approach to moral behavior. However, in the early studies, college students who read about morality were subsequently more likely to cheat on a vocabulary test than were control subjects who read materials irrelevant to morality. We hypothesized that resentment toward the test constructors interacted with the moral schemas activated by the reading task. To reduce resentment, in Study III the vocabulary test was presented as the experimenter's doctoral research. As predicted, compared to controls, those subjects who read about morality cheated less. Study IV was a quasi-experiment that confirmed the …

Rat Dendritic Cells Function As Accessory Cells And Control The Production Of A Soluble Factor Required For Mitogenic Responses Of T Lymphocytes., Wolfgang E. Klinkert, Jon H. Labadie, James P. O'Brien, Carl F. Beyer, William E. Bowers Sep 1980

Rat Dendritic Cells Function As Accessory Cells And Control The Production Of A Soluble Factor Required For Mitogenic Responses Of T Lymphocytes., Wolfgang E. Klinkert, Jon H. Labadie, James P. O'Brien, Carl F. Beyer, William E. Bowers

Dartmouth Scholarship

Transformation of T lymphocytes, induced by treatment with periodate or with neuraminidase plus galactose oxidase, requires the participation of accessory cells. Procedures were developed for the fractionation of rat lymph node cells, by which most of the lymphocytes can be recovered as a major population of cells that do not respond to mitogenic stimulation unless accessory cells from a separated minor population are added. Further purification led to a 1000-fold overall increase in accessory activity per cell, with a 50-70% yield. The purest preparations were virtually free of macrophages and contained more than 90% typical dendritic cells. Maximum responses occurred …

A Small Area Approach To The Analysis Of Health Systems Performance, John E. Wennberg, Alan Gittelsohn

Dartmouth Scholarship

Methods and techniques for acquiring and analyzing data have been an area of primary concern for State and local health planning agencies since their initial designation. As their responsibilities have developed and the factors become more complex, the agencies have realized an even greater need for analytic processes for evaluating the performance of their health care systems and determining future directions of their programs.

Cellular Action Of Vasopressin In Medullary Tubules Of Mice With Hereditary Nephrogenic Diabetes Insipidus, Brian A. Jackson, Richard M. Edwards, Heinz Valtin, Thomas P. Dousa Jul 1980

Cellular Action Of Vasopressin In Medullary Tubules Of Mice With Hereditary Nephrogenic Diabetes Insipidus, Brian A. Jackson, Richard M. Edwards, Heinz Valtin, Thomas P. Dousa

Dartmouth Scholarship

Our previous studies (1974. J. Clin. Invest.54: 753-762.) suggested that impaired metabolism of cyclic AMP (cAMP) may be involved in the renal unresponsiveness to vasopressin (VP) in mice with hereditary nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (NDI). To localize such a defect to specific segments of the nephron, we studied the activities of VP-sensitive adenylate cyclase, cAMP phosphodiesterase (cAMP-PDIE), as well as accumulation of cAMP in medullary collecting tubules (MCT) and in medullary thick ascending limbs of Henle's loop (MAL) microdissected from control mice with normal concentrating ability and from mice with hereditary NDI.

Adenylate cyclase activity stimulated by VP or by …

Public School Physical Therapists: Role Definition And Educational Needs, Pamela Levangie Jun 1980

Public School Physical Therapists: Role Definition And Educational Needs, Pamela Levangie

All PTHMS Faculty Publications

Questionnaires returned by 328 physical therapists were analyzed to 1) establish a role definition for public school therapists and 2) determine the educational needs of therapists preparing for public school service. The therapists ranked 15 skills in importance to the role of the public school physical therapist and in urgency of their need to develop each skill. They also indicated which educational format they believed would be most appropriate for developing each skill. The respondents were divided into four groups matched by experience in treating children and by exposure to public school physical therapy. Rank-order correlations within each of these …
