Smart Indigenous Youth, Jamin Patel

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

There is evidence that indicates the immense benefits of physical activity for the physical and mental health of youth. To respond to the youth mental health crisis in Indigenous communities in Canada, a culturally appropriate, land-based active living program called Smart Indigenous Youth (SIY) was developed by the Digital Epidemiology and Population Health Laboratory (DEPtH Lab). SIY is a longitudinal digital health community trial that applies the concept of citizen science to assess land-based active living’s impact on Indigenous youth mental health. My project examined the challenges to mental health faced by youth living in Indigenous Rural Communities during the …

Generalist teachers and early childhood educators (ECEs) play an important role in promoting physical activity and fundamental movement skills in children. However, teachers face several barriers to promoting physical activity and fundamental movement skills including inadequate training and professional development. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the efficacy of capacity building interventions on teachers’ and ECEs’ physical activity and fundamental movement skills related knowledge, self-efficacy and attitudes.

The search revealed 22 studies which reported on 25 unique samples. The most common capacity building intervention component implemented was training/professional development. The results of this study revealed that capacity building interventions are …

An Environmental Scan Of Weight-Inclusive Resources, Sara A. Bozzo Aug 2022

An Environmental Scan Of Weight-Inclusive Resources, Sara A. Bozzo

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

This summer, alongside another USRI student, I began to further explore weight-inclusive physical activity. This approach to movement emphasizes that health and well-being can be achieved by anyone, regardless of their size, if provided with accessible, non-stigmatizing environments and support. Though this approach has increased in prevalence over the years, little is known about the application of weight-inclusive approaches in real-world contexts. Using an environmental scan protocol, this study will aim to examine the breadth of online weight-inclusive resources and services within grey literature (internet, social media, experts); synthesize and evaluate the content within identified materials; and discover gaps in …

Each student will be asked to take an arithmetic problem-solving test then asked to study the material for three weeks. Of the 200 students, 100 will be randomly assigned to a physical activity condition, in which they will be asked to run 30 minutes prior to studying, then all students will be asked to take a timed …

Adolescent Girls Physical Activity Engagement And Body Image Development, Vanessa Coulbeck Aug 2021

Adolescent Girls Physical Activity Engagement And Body Image Development, Vanessa Coulbeck

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

This summer I looked more into adolescent girls’ physical activity engagement and its’ relationship to weight-based teasing. This topic intrigued me because from my own sport experiences, I saw first-hand how compared to boys, adolescent girls dis-engage from sport and exercise at a disproportionately higher rate and are at higher risk for body shame and self-objectification. This gender inequity in sport and physical activity is first observed in adolescence and tracks well into adulthood. The purpose of this summer's research activities examined how self-compassion and weight-related teasing relate to self-conscious emotions and sport and physical activity participation.
