The Therapeutic Effect Of Nifedipine As A Ca+2entry Blocker On Experimental Transientischemic Retina, Murat Kaya, Cemal Gündoğdu

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

We evaluated the effect of nifedip-ine, an L-type voltage sensitive Ca+2 channel (VSCC) blocker, on the onset of neuronal damage induced by transient ischemia of guinea pig retinas in vivo. The animals were divided into two groups. In the first group 2 mg/kg Nifedipine was administered intraperi-toneally, while only 2 cc/kg NaCl 0.9% solution was given to the second group thirty minutes before the ischemic insult. Seven days after the temporary ligation of bilateral common carotid arteries for 45 minutes, the animals were dispatched and the eyes were enucleated for histopathologic analysis. It was observed that in the Nifedipine treated …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

There is no ideal surgical technique for cervical spondylosis. The choice of surgical procedure remains controversial. A series of 25 patients who had undergone subtotal vertebrectomy and iliac bone fusion between 1985 and 1995 were reviewed. There were 19 men and 6 women with an average age of 55.6 years. All of the patients had cervical myelopathy and /or radiculopathy due to multi-level spondylosis and 7 with associated ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament. In 6 patients 1 vertebral body, in 10 patients 2 vertebral bodies, and in 9 patients 3 vertebral bodies were resected. After a mean 15-month follow-up …

Dose Dependent Changes In The Cristaneuroepitheium Resulting From Gentamicinototoxicity In The Chinchilla, Hasan Tanyeri̇, Ivan Lopez, Larry Hoffman

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

This experiment was conducted to investigate the dose-dependent effects of gentamicin (GM) on the neuroepithelial morphology of the posterior crista ampullares (PCA) of the adult chinchilla. The experiment focused on hair cell (HC) morphology to monitor GM's dose-dependent effects and also to define an ototoxically-efficient and safe dose what would subsequently be used in a time course study. Chinchillas (n=13) were treated with subcutaneous (SC) daily doses of 120 mg/kg, 60 mg/kg, and 30 mg/kg GM, respectively, for six days. Light microscopy observations were made from the excised PCA of two animals from each group that survided the complete treatment …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

In this study; inhibitory and bactericidal activities of cefoperazone + sulbactam against Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains were determined in two studies first in 1992 and second in 1994. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values were determined by following the microdilution method recommended by NCCLS (Approved Standard M7-A2 1990) protocol. P.aeruginosa strains were isolated from different clinical materials. The results of the studies were then compared to point out if the difference between MIC and MBC values were significant and if there was resistance development following two years of use. In the first study in 1992: MIC90 and …

Action Of Aspirin On Acetylcholine-Stimulatedtear Secretion In Rats, Zerri̇n Kapicioğlu, Gamze Çan, I. Nuri̇ Kalyoncu

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

In this study we investigated the effect of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) on tear secretion in rats. The animals were anesthetized intraperitoneally (ip) with urethane (1,2g/kg). The treatment was injected subcutaneously (s.c.). Tear samples were collected by folding a 5 mm section of a Schirmer strip over the lower lid margin to absorb tear fluid from the lower conjunctival sac for 5 min. Forty animals were divided into four groups (n=10). Group 1 (control) received 1ml of saline, group 2 received 60mg/kg of ASA, group 3 received 50mg/kg of Acetylcholine (Ach), and group 4 received 60mg/kg of ASA and 30 min …

Lipid Peroxidation In Behçet's Disease In Activeand Remission Periods, Teoman Erdem, Necmetti̇n Akdeni̇z, İrfan Altuntaş, Fati̇h Akçay

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Recent few studies revealed that increased levels of oxygen free radicals might play a role in tissue damage. There are some studies in the literature proposing that increased levels of oxygen radicals might play a role in tissue damage, as also seen in Behçet's disease (BD). The aim of the present study was to measure plasma malondialde-hyde (MDA) (as an index of lipid peroxida-tion) levels in 23 patients with BD (13 men, 10 women with a mean age of 34.5 ± .2 years) both in active and in remission periods. Twenty-one healthy volunteers (11 men, 10 women) formed as the …
