The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Equex STM Paste on goat semen quality aftercryopreservation. Semen samples were consecutively collected once a week, from six mature bucks. The semensamples with adequate motility (>60%) and sperm concentration (>1,500x106 sperm/ml) were frozen in an egg yolk-Tris semen extender supplemented either with (E+) or without (E-) Equex STM Paste. The semen quality includingmotility, viability, morphology, acrosome integrity and membrane functional integrity were evaluated beforeprocessing and after cryopreservation. To determine the seroprevalence of caprine arthritis-encephalitis virus infection (CAEV) in goats in theWestern part of Thailand, a cross-sectional serological survey was conducted in three provinces, Ratchaburi,Petchaburi and Kanchanaburi, situated in the western part of the country along the border area. A total of 1,129serum samples from 74 randomly selected goat farms containing different breeds of goats were collected during theperiod from November 2009 to January 2011. Virus infection requires the interaction of a virus protein with the host-cell receptor. The Influenza A virusreceptor consists of sialic acid linked to the galactose unit in a α 2,3 or α 2,6 conformation. Various types of thesereceptors are expressed differently on the epithelial lining of various animal species. Here we characterized the typesof receptors that are expressed in the upper and lower respiratory tracts of cow, buffalo, pig and quail. The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The prevalence of Enterococcus faecalis was investigated in diseased swine in Hunan Province, China betweenFebruary 2007 and February 2011. A total of 385 diseased swine dissected in prosectorium from 10 representativeadministrative regions in Hunan Province were examined for the presence of E. faecalis. Forty-two out of 385 (10.91%)diseased swine were found to be infected with E. faecalis by bacteria isolations. E. faecalis was mainly recovered fromthe lung and joint cavity. Identification of the organisms was based on biochemical assays and sequencing of thepartial 16S rRNA. An experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of Roselle calyx in two preparation forms in layerdiets on egg production performance, egg quality and TBARS value in plasma and yolk. Two hundred and seventy,33-week-old, CP Brown laying hens were randomly allocated into 6 treatments with 5 replications of 9 hens each.The dietary treatments were control diet, control diet supplemented with 250 mg/kg α-tocopheryl acetate, dietcontaining 1 and 2% of Roselle calyx crude extracts, and diet containing 2% and 4% Roselle calyx powder. The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Asian elephant is indigenous to many countries including Thailand, but fermenter microorganisms ingastrointestinal tract of the elephant have not fully been investigated. Therefore, this study aimed to observe thecellulolytic bacteria in Genus Ruminococcus in large intestines of captive Asian elephants (Elephas maximus). Fecalsamples were collected from male and female sucklings, young and adult captive Asian elephants. Forty-fourelephants were divided into 3 groups as followed: A) > 18 years old (n=24); B) 2-18 years old (n=17) and C) < 2 yearsold (n=3). The results revealed that there were 214 (42.8%) isolates of R. flavefaciens, 105 (21.0%) isolates of R. bromii, 90(18.0%) isolates of R. obeum, 54 (10.8%) isolates of R. callidus and 37 (7.4%) isolates of R. albus from all fecal samplesexamined. Interestingly, Ruminococcus strains could be isolated from the weaned elephants, but were not found in thesucklings (p<0.05). In conclusion, cellulolytic bacteria in Genus Ruminococcus were isolated from the large intestines ofcaptive Asian elephants. Moreover, the highest prevalence of the bacteria was found in the elephants aged more than18 years old.

The origin of dogs came from the limited number of founders leading to inbreeding or genetic diseasewithin or among breeds. Thai Ridgeback (TR) and Bangkaew (BK) dogs were the only native dog breeds that webelieved to originate in Thailand. The study of genetic variability in Thai dogs (39 Thai Ridgeback dogs, 82 Bangkaewdogs) was defined by using 12 microsatellite markers. These DNA markers were highly informative and distributedthrough the canine genome. Microarray containing 13319 probes was used to construct gene expression profiles in order to screendifferentially expressed genes of muscle tissues in Rugao chicken and investigate the molecular mechanism relatedwith muscle tissue traits at 2 and 12 weeks old of chicken. Two hundred and eight differentially expressed genes, ofwhich 108 were known genes, 94 up-regulated, 114 down-regulated were involved in growth, molecular mechanism,fat metabolism, cell proliferation, transcription and splicing factor, protein synthesis and degradation. Eleven multiparous crossbred lactating sows were used to determine the influence of deficient protein dietcontaining 8.2% crude protein and normal protein diet containing 18.2% crude protein on plasma amino acidconcentrations of sows and their piglets, physical mammary gland and histological changes of mammary cells. Theywere provided sufficient water and feed access to one of two isocaloric diets, either deficient (6 sows) or normalprotein diets (5 sows). Derivation of embryonic stem (ES) cells from parthenogenetic embryos represents a possible alternativeapproach to create histocompatible cells for regenerative medicine. The objectives of this study were to establishmouse parthenogenetic ES (pES) cell lines from parthenogenetically-derived blastocysts as a model system for humanand animal research and to examine pluripotency differences among the pES cell lines. We are able to report thesuccessful establishment of four pluripotent pES cell lines from blastocysts of parthenogenetic origin (22% efficiencyof pES cell line establishment). The study is of the antinociceptive effects of tramadol on the thermal threshold response in eight cats using athermal threshold-testing device which contained a heater element and a temperature sensor placed on the shavedlateral thoracic area. Prevalence Of Mycoplasma Wenyonii Infection On Seven Dairy Farms In Shanghai, China, Yuan Congli, Ying Hong, Zhang Zhonghai, Yang Zhibiao, Cui Li, Zhu Jianguo, Hua Xiuguo

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Mycoplasma wenyonii (M. Wenyonii) was studied by PCR and blood smear staining in 197 cows. Clinical signsand hematological parameters of all tested cows were collected. Results confirmed that 31% populations werepositive of M. wenyonii infection. Statistical analysis revealed that the cows of 2-4 years old were most susceptible. Noclinical sings were found to be significantly associated with the infection. The infection also did not result in anemiabased on hematological investigation that only showed elevation of WBC counts in infected cows. Sequence analysisof the partial 16S rRNA gene showed that three different representative strains were confirmed in the present study.

piRNAs are a testis-specific class of small RNAs in mammal. Sixteen sequences of piRNAs were cloned fromthree different species by the method of construction of cDNA library including two sequences from mouse, eightsequences from quail and six sequences from chicken. Herein, the two piRNAs sequences from mouse had alreadybeen identified, while the others were cloned for the first time. The aim of this study was to determine whether lipid peroxidation is correlated with semen quality in Asianelephant bulls. Malondialdehyde (MDA) in seminal plasma from ejaculates with varying percentages of progressivemotility was measured using Thiobarbituric Acid method. Correlation between the MDA levels and percentages ofprogressive motility and normal morphology were performed. Results revealed that the MDA levels weresignificantly negative, which correlated (p<0.05) with the percentages of progressive motility and normal morphology(R=0.2131 and 0.1685, respectively). The results also showed that the MDA levels were significantly differencebetween each bull (p<0.01). Furthermore, when the ejaculates were grouped according to motility scores into twogroups; low- (<40%) and high-percentage of progressive motility (>40%), a significant difference was detectedbetween the MDA means (±SD) of the low- (20.7±11.4 nmol/ml) and high-percentages of progressive motility(14.4±7.8 nmol/ml) groups. Anticoagulant rodenticide, especially coumarin derivative, is the most common cause of companion animalintoxication. Retrospective pathological examination was performed on 10 dogs suspected to be intoxicated withanticoagulant rodenticides. Coumarin derivatives, cause of intoxication, were confirmed by toxicologicalidentification using thin layer chromatography technique and spectral analysis. Macroscopically and microscopically,all cases showed generalized hemorrhages in various organs. Microscopic examination of hemorrhagic scores of liver,kidneys, intestines, heart, and lungs were 2.28+1.94, 2±2, 1±1.63, 0.8±1.68, and 1.1+2.32, respectively. Highesthemorrhagic score of the liver indicated that it suffered the most hemorrhagic effects related to anticoagulantrodenticides. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of long-term administration of recombinant bovinesomatotropin (rbST) on the acid-base homeostasis of lactating crossbred cows under hot and humid condition ofThailand. Two groups of five animals each of primiparous crossbred dairy cattle were supplemented either with rbSTor with control vehicle every 14 days throughout the period of lactation. The blood gas parameters, milk yield andfeed intake from both groups were recorded at each stage of lactation. This study was conducted from 2004 to 2009 to investigate the prevalence of Listeria monocytogenes in thechicken production chain in Thailand from primary production stages to processing plants. A total of 14,670 sampleswere taken from 43 breeder farms, 32 hatcheries, 1331 broiler farms, 22 slaughterhouses and 22 ready-to-eat (RTE)chicken products from processing plants. Various types of samples were collected: soiled litter, water, and chickenfeed from breeder and broiler farms; swabs and mecomium from hatcheries; cloacal swabs and fresh frozen chickenmeat from slaughterhouses; and RTE chicken products from processing plants. Recently, we reported the preferential infection of a novel glial cell type from adult canine brain, termedSchwann cell-like brain glia (SCBG) with canine distemper virus (CDV). To further characterize virus-cell and cell-cellinteractions, SCBG in purified and mixed brain cell cultures was infected with different CDV strains. Cell cultureswere infected with the attenuated CDV-Ond, CDV-2544, CDV-OndeGFP, CDV-R252 and the mustelid virulent CDV-5804PeGFP strain. Cytopathic effects (CPEs) and the percentage of infection were monitored daily at 3 and 10 dayspost-infection (dpi), respectively.
