Does Vehicle Intrusion Alone Still Predict Injury: A Retrospective Analysis Of Mechanism As Trauma Activation Criteria, Harrison Travis, Sarah Muramoto, Alison Smith, John Hunt, Lance Stuke, Patrick Greiffenstein, Jonathan Schoen, Alan Marr

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Background: Current Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Guidelines for ‘Field Triage of Injured’ recommend patients involved in automobile collisions with greater than 12 inches of intrusion on the driver side or 18 inches on the passenger compartment should meet criteria for trauma activations. However, previous studies suggest that mechanism-of-injury (MOI) criteria only is a moderate predictor for patients who require trauma center resources given the introduction of “crumple zones” to cars. Crumple zones have been incorporated into modern vehicle design as a safety feature. The objective of this study was to determine if vehicle intrusion alone as MOI criteria necessitates …

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Socioeconomic status remains a predictor of endometrial cancer prognosis and is correlated with advanced disease in patients. Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) provides the ability to prescribe targeted cancer therapies and increases patient survival. Race, ethnicity, and insurance status impact the use of NGS analysis, though the degree of impact remains unclear. An IRB-Approved retrospective research study was performed using data collected of gynecologic cancer patients in a southern healthcare system through use of the electronic medical record (EMR). Baseline clinicopathologic and demographic factors were collected for all endometrial cancer patients. These factors were then tested for significant association on whether …

Prolonged Administration Of Kappa Opioid Agonist Difelikefalin Retains Its Efficacyon The Diuretic Response, Ashlyn Y. Anderson, Luke E. Beckendorf, Daniel R. Kapusta

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

RATIONALE: Disease states exhibiting high amounts of edema, including congestive heart failure, hepatic cirrhosis, and hypertension, are often treated with a combination of diuretics to reduce water retention in the body. Patients treated with the loop diuretic furosemide face an increased risk for developing adverse conditions, such as hyponatremia and hypokalemia and with time loss of diuretic efficacy (diuretic resistance). In contrast, the kappa opioid agonist difelikefalin produces a sodium sparing diuresis by inhibiting hypothalamic neurons responsible for the secretion/release of antidiuretic hormone (ADH) located in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN). Consequently, inhibition of ADH release increases urine output by increasing …

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Abnormal lipid metabolism is the derivation of multiple retinal degenerative and blinding diseases. The membrane-type frizzled-related protein (MFRP), and adiponectin receptor 1 (AdipoR1) were shown to be vital to the maintenance of a healthy retinal lipidome. The two mice models of retinal degenerations Mfrprd6 and Adipor1 -/- resulted in a reduction of phospholipids containing docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; 22:6) and very long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (VLC-PUFAs). In a pathway involving the ω-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA; 20:5) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; 22:6), the fatty acid elongase-4 (ELOVL4) elongates the fatty acid 28:6 into VLC-PUFAs, which are precursors to potent neuroprotective …

Evaluation Of Medial Branch Blocks For Lumbar Facet Joint Radiofrequency Ablation: What Is The Role Of The Second Diagnostic Block?, Alexandra Bartholomew, Noah Hoffman, David Provenzano, Todd Sitzman

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Lumbar medial branch (LMB) radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a commonly performed procedure to treat facet joint-mediated pain. One of the challenges associated with LMB RFA is appropriately selecting patients for the procedure. Currently, patient history, physical examination, and diagnostic studies inadequately select patients for RFA. Therefore, diagnostic local anesthetic blocks are often recommended, yet the type and number of blocks needed to appropriately select patients for LMB RFA are debated. Success rates have been shown to be higher when dual blocks are employed; however, there are additional costs, humanistic factors, and risks of excluding individuals that may benefit from RFA. …

The Effects Of Alcohol Consumption On Metabolic Factors In The Alive-Ex Study Participants, Meva Beganovic, Stefany D. Primeaux Oct 2022

The Effects Of Alcohol Consumption On Metabolic Factors In The Alive-Ex Study Participants, Meva Beganovic, Stefany D. Primeaux

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Alcohol consumption among people living with HIV (PLWH) is common and increases the risk for metabolic disorders such as insulin resistance and diabetes. Adiponectin is an adipokine, produced in adipocytes, that protects against insulin resistance by increasing insulin sensitivity and thus may play a preventative role against the development of metabolic disease. Previous studies have demonstrated an inconsistency regarding the impact of alcohol consumption on adiponectin levels. In a cross-sectional analysis of participants enrolled in the ALIVE-Ex Study, we did not find a significant relationship between at-risk alcohol use, as measured by Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) score, in …

Multi-Dermatomal Herpes Zoster Infection As The Presenting Symptom Of Underlyingductal Carcinoma, Kaylin Beiter, Carrie Pham, Vince Cataldo, Jessica Lacombe

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Herpes zoster infection has been associated with a significantly increased risk of future all-cause cancer incidence. In addition, zoster infections, when involving the breast, may mimic breast malignancy, and this similar phenotype may present a diagnostic challenge for clinicians. Few cases of concurrent infection and any malignancy have been reported. We present the case of a herpes zoster infection that was associated with concurrent breast malignancy. A 62-year-old woman with a history of coronary artery disease, hypertension, and reduced ejection heart failure presented to the emergency department for a four-week history of rash of her left upper back and breast. …

Chronic High Salt Diets Contribute To Neurogenic Hypertension By Increasing B1r Expressionand B1r-Mediated Ace2 Internalization And Degradation, Jagnoor Benipal, Navya Lakkapa, Anna Nuzzo, Mona Elgazzaz, Eric Lazartigues

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that hypertension affects nearly 50% of Americans1 . Previous studies have shown that chronically elevated dietary salt intake contributes to developing neurogenic hypertension2 . Additionally, increased expression of the bradykinin B1 receptor (B1R) in neurons in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN) is seen in neurogenic hypertension which leads to neuroinflammation and oxidative stress3 . Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) is a key enzyme in the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) pathway that mitigates the vasoconstrictive effects of Angiotensin (Ang) II by cleaving it to Ang-(1-7)4 . We previously observed that the binding of Ang-II to …

Nk Cells In Uterine Cancers, Schumann Chang, Vijay Kumar, Caitlin Bauer, John Stewart Oct 2022

Nk Cells In Uterine Cancers, Schumann Chang, Vijay Kumar, Caitlin Bauer, John Stewart

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Uterine cancer, which includes endometrial cancer (EC) and cervical cancer (CC), is one of the most prevalent gynecologic malignancies amongst women. It is the fourth most common cancer for women in the United States, with more than 90% of uterine cancers occurring in the endometrium. The uterus is a mucosal immune organ that supports embryonic and fetal development. However, its immune microenvironment is continuously altered depending on female sex hormones status, which varies with menstrual cycle and pregnancy. While pregnancy is considered a controlled stage of inflammation, this is not the case in carcinogenesis. This review paper focuses on NK …

In-Depth Analysis Of Next-Generation Sequencing (Ngs) And Bioinformatics Results In Pediatric Adgrv1 Compound Heterozygotes, Sloane Clay, Adele Evans, Chindo Hicks, David Otohinoyi

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Genetic diagnosis of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) using NGS proves challenging when encountering multigenic, multiallelic variants of uncertain significance (VUS). These VUS make it difficult to provide anticipatory guidance regarding progressive disorders such as Type II Usher syndrome (SNHL at birth and retinitis pigmentosa in the second decade of life). With genetic testing companies are identifying, reporting, and reclassifying VUS at a rapid pace; there is a need for in depth-analysis and interpretation. For example, VUS in ADGRV1, a gene implicated in Type II Usher Syndrome, may be inherited in a compound heterozygous manner and misinterpreted as benign, when in …

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Background: Bowel injuries from trauma require immediate recognition and operative intervention. Missed bowel result in significant morbidity and mortality such as infection, enterocutaneous fistulas, additional surgeries, prolonged hospitalization, and mortality. Clinical and diagnostic expertise are limited as significant blunt bowel and/or mesenteric injuries can be evasive to detect with current imaging modalities, and physical exam findings can be unreliable. Current guidelines for the management of patients with a possible bowel injury do not offer clear direction. Objective: The objective of this study was to develop decision-making algorithms to identify patients at high risk for missed bowel injuries. Methods: A retrospective …

The Fecal Position: Tracking Progressive Dna Repeat Expansion Via Stool Dna Extraction, Margaret Conrad, Hayley Ulloa, Ed Grabczyk Oct 2022

The Fecal Position: Tracking Progressive Dna Repeat Expansion Via Stool Dna Extraction, Margaret Conrad, Hayley Ulloa, Ed Grabczyk

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Friedreich Ataxia is a progressive DNA repeat expansion disease. Examining DNA repeat expansion in mouse models require sacrificing the mouse and taking samples of organs. The obvious non-lethal targets, such as ears, tails, and blood do not have levels of repeat expansion comparable to internal organs. However, recent publications suggest that stool may be a suitable non-lethal candidate for tracking repeat expansion over time. Stool DNA may allow researchers to monitor the effect of interventions aimed at slowing DNA repeat expansion over time without harming the mouse. A commercial kit was first used to extract DNA from feces without success. …

Barriers That Contribute To Disparities Seen In The Prenatal Diagnosis Of Congenital Heart Disease In Patients With Government-Funded Health Insurance, Olivia Crapanzano, Lauren Haddad, Kathleen Crapanzano

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

BACKGROUND: Multiple national studies have established an inverse relationship between surgical center volume and surgical outcomes in pediatric cardiac surgery. The aim of the initial study was to determine whether surgical outcomes for a private, outpatient pediatric cardiology practice that was not associated with a surgical center, differed based on the surgical center volume to which the patient was referred. While we did not find significant differences in clinical outcomes related to surgical center volume, race or insurance status during the initial study, important disparities to care were identified. Children with private insurance were more likely to be diagnosed prenatally …

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a generalized inflammatory gastrointestinal (GI) disease that includes Ulcerative Colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease (CD). Consideration of diagnostic choices outside of endoscopy are urgent, and especially so for the pediatric population. A growing number of diagnosed IBD cases with rates up to 25% of all IBD occurrences are pediatric cases. Current available fecal markers have yet to satisfy desired characteristics. For example, thus far, they can achieve moderate specificity but low sensitivity, but they cannot reliably stratify patients into a quiescent, mild, moderately active, or severe disease states. Intestinal alkaline phosphatase (iAP), an enzyme shed …

Estrogen, Obesity, And Anticoagulant Protein S Contribute To Thrombosis In Mice, Alaina Guilbeau, Manoj Kumar, Laurent Mosnier, Rinku Majumder

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Protein S (PS) is an anticoagulant molecule present in humans and mice. Protein S binds and inhibits coagulation Factor IXa to control thrombin generation1 . Protein S is imperative for normal hemostasis and the prevention of life-threatening thrombotic events, as demonstrated by numerous studies of patients with PS deficiency2,3,4. Pregnant women5 and women who use estrogen-containing birth control pills 6 have lower levels of PS. Thus, it is postulated that estrogen downregulates PS expression in human. Because estrogen is synthesized by aromatase, which is highly expressed in adipose tissue7 , we expected that PS will be downregulated in obese mice …

Ophthalmology Consult Order: “Rule Out Open Globe Injury, Ellen Ingram, Matthew Williams, Kevin Kirchner

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Out of traumatic eye injuries, open globe injuries are associated with the highest patient morbidity. Computed tomography (CT) imaging of the orbits is routinely used by the emergency department physician during workup of traumatic eye injuries. Positive CT findings reliably indicate penetration of the globe with a specificity up to 98% [1]. However, studies have consistently shown that CT imaging fails to diagnose approximately 30% of open globe injuries [1,2]. Therefore, a negative CT scan does not definitively rule out an open globe. There are no defined exam parameters that have been established as reliable indicators for open globe injuries …
