Phloretin And Phlorizin Derivative Containing Compounds, Donald F. Diedrich, Susanne L. Diedrich Jul 1988

Phloretin And Phlorizin Derivative Containing Compounds, Donald F. Diedrich, Susanne L. Diedrich

Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Patents

Compounds including phloretin and/or phlorizin derivatives coupled to an undigestible and non-absorbable matrix are provided. The compounds have pharmacological efficacies. They inhibit sugar uptake from the intestine and may be used in composition form in methods for treating diabetes and for promoting weight loss. A method for the manufacture of these compounds and a novel intermediate phlorizin derivative for making these compounds are also disclosed.

Preparation Of Biodegradable Microspheres Useful As Carriers For Macromolecules, Patrick P. Deluca, Frantisek Rypacek May 1988

Preparation Of Biodegradable Microspheres Useful As Carriers For Macromolecules, Patrick P. Deluca, Frantisek Rypacek

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Patents

A method for preparing biodegradable microspheres having a three-dimensional network in which biologically active macromolecular agents are physically entrapped therein. The microsphere is able to degrade and release the macromolecular agent at a controlled rate. The method involves emulsifying a vinyl derivative of a biodegradable hydrophilic polymer, a water-soluble monovinyl monomer and a biologically active macromolecule in water, and copolymerizing the biodegradable hydrophilic polymer and the water-soluble monovinyl monomer such that the biologically active macromolecule is entrapped therein.

Simple Capsule Pneumograph, Steve S. Kraman Mar 1988

Simple Capsule Pneumograph, Steve S. Kraman

Internal Medicine Faculty Patents

A capsule pneumograph includes an electret microphone connected to a capsule chestpiece attached to a sleeping subject. The output of the microphone is connected to the input of a recorder or monitor in order to provide a system for the detection of respiratory movements in subjects during polysomnographic sleep monitoring. A tube connecting the capsule chestpiece to the microphone functions as a low pass filter to pass only low frequency signals in the range of respiratory movements from the chestpiece to the microphone.

A Controlled Evaluation Of Devotional Meditation And Progressive Muscle Relaxation, Charles R. Carlson, Panayiota E. Bacaseta, Dexter A. Simanton Jan 1988

A Controlled Evaluation Of Devotional Meditation And Progressive Muscle Relaxation, Charles R. Carlson, Panayiota E. Bacaseta, Dexter A. Simanton

CRVAW Faculty Journal Articles

The present study was conducted to determine the effects of devotional meditation (DM), defined as a period of prayer and quiet reading and pondering of biblical material, on physiological and psychological variables related to stress. It was hypothesized that religious persons engaging in DM experience physiological and psychological changes similar to those reported for persons using progressive relaxation (PR) exercises. Thirty-six participants, equally divided by sex into 3 groups: DM, PR, and a Wait List Control, underwent extensive psychophysiological assessment prior to and following a systematic introductio to either DM or PR. The hypothesis that DM could generate positive physiological …

The Detection, Pharmacokinetics And Behavioral Effects Of Diisopropylamine Dichloroacetate (Dada) In The Horse: A Preliminary Report, J.-M. Yang, W. E. Woods, T. J. Weckman, T. W. Wood, S.-L. Chang, J. W. Blake, Thomas Tobin Jan 1988

The Detection, Pharmacokinetics And Behavioral Effects Of Diisopropylamine Dichloroacetate (Dada) In The Horse: A Preliminary Report, J.-M. Yang, W. E. Woods, T. J. Weckman, T. W. Wood, S.-L. Chang, J. W. Blake, Thomas Tobin

Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center Faculty Publications

1. Drug administration studies using diisopropylamine dichloroacetate (DADA) and diisopropylamine (DIPA) were conducted in Thoroughbred and Standardbred horses to assess physiological effects and develop detection methods.

2. Four horses received 0.08 mg DADA/kg body wt and showed no changes in heart and respiratory rates or body temperature as measured over a 1-hr period after administration. A transient diuretic effect was found to occur in 2 mares dosed with 0.80 mg DADA/kg body wt.

3. A qualitative detection method using thin-layer chromatography was developed to detect DIPA, the major metabolite of DADA in equine urine. A quantitative detection method (lower limit …
