Diabetes is an epidemic in the United States. There are three types of diabetes: type 1, 2, and gestational diabetes. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is the most common type of diabetes. This type of diabetes can be prevented or delayed. In persons with T2DM, the body cannot use insulin well to keep blood glucose within normal limits. Several factors, including genetics, lifestyle such as poor diet and physical inactivity, obesity, insulin resistance, hormones, and certain medications, can cause it. A precursor to T2DM is prediabetes. Prediabetes is when blood sugar levels are elevated but not elevated enough to be …

Increasing And Monitoring Medication Adherence By Implementing A Long-Acting Injection Screening Tool, Analee Ryals Dec 2023

Increasing And Monitoring Medication Adherence By Implementing A Long-Acting Injection Screening Tool, Analee Ryals

Doctoral Projects

Medication nonadherence leads to a high risk of deterioration in patients diagnosed with a mental illness. Medication nonadherence is more likely in patients who are taking daily oral medications when compared to patients on long-acting injectable antipsychotics (LAIs) (Chakrabarti, 2014). Millions of people are diagnosed with bipolar disorder or schizophrenia and treated with various medications. However, LAIs are under-utilized as a long-term treatment option for patients diagnosed with a mental illness. Patients who are prescribed LAI have a better quality of life and are more closely monitored by their healthcare providers (Kaplan et al., 2013). The implementation of an LAI …

Encouraging Medication Compliance By Implementing A Medication Adherence Tool, Regina Taylor Dec 2023

Encouraging Medication Compliance By Implementing A Medication Adherence Tool, Regina Taylor

Doctoral Projects

Medication non-adherence has been a common and challenging problem in health care, especially among mental health patients. Studies show medication compliance among psychiatric patients has been at a lower rate than patients with physical conditions. Non-compliance with medications has been one of the considerable contributions to rapid psychiatric hospital readmission. Rapid readmissions have been costing health care billions of dollars annually. The stigma behind mental health has a large contribution to why mental health patients are non-compliant with their psychotropics. Utilization of the Medication Adherence Rating Scale (MARS) on a patient to evaluate the patient's willingness and ability to take …

Quality Improvement Project To Assist In Implementation Of Prediabetes Screen Protocol, Kyai Forney Oct 2023

Quality Improvement Project To Assist In Implementation Of Prediabetes Screen Protocol, Kyai Forney

Doctoral Projects

Prediabetes is a reversible condition that causes blood glucose levels to be higher than normal, but not high enough to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes. When one has prediabetes, the cells in the body do not respond normally to insulin, and insulin acts like a key to letting blood sugar into cells to use energy. The pancreas produces insulin to try to get the cells to respond, but eventually, the pancreas has a challenging time keeping up, and the blood sugar level rises causing prediabetes (Lehrman, 2021). A person can have prediabetes for years with no obvious symptoms, so …

Early Identification Of Barriers To Medication Adherence In The Elderly Population Through The Use Of A Modified Screening Tool, Miranda Joyner, Blake Meranto

Doctoral Projects

Medication nonadherence (MNA) is a major contributor to hospitalizations and accounts for billions of dollars spent every year on health care. Despite medications being prescribed in nearly 75% of healthcare interactions, it is estimated that 33 to 50% of Americans do not take their medications as prescribed, if at all (Bartlett Ellis et al., 2020; Kleinsinger, 2018). The COM-B (Capability, Opportunity, Motivation, Behavior) Model used in this DNP project suggests that an individual must have the capability, opportunity, and motivation to enact a certain behavior, and should any of these areas be lacking, the behavior is unlikely to occur. This …

Why The West Should Help China Reduce Unrecognized And Preventable Covid-19 Deaths, George A. Gellert Jul 2023

Why The West Should Help China Reduce Unrecognized And Preventable Covid-19 Deaths, George A. Gellert

Journal of Health Ethics

In an era marked by a ruinous war between a democratic state and a totalitarian regime, political volatility, rightward looking isolationism and nationalism, and heightened competition and disputes between China and the West, it is perhaps difficult to discern why the West should supply China with COVID-19 vaccines and therapeutics, as well as epidemiological assistance in order to mitigate a potentially unrecognized COVID-19 crisis in that nation. This commentary considers three arguments against Western and international indifference to the plight of China as it transitions to COVID-19 endemicity.

A Framework For Personal Respiratory Ethics, Ian W. Goddard

Journal of Health Ethics

The Covid-19 pandemic raises the need for an ethical framework that addresses the unique ethical challenges and questions arising from airborne infectious diseases. For example, are we ever ethically obliged to wear a face mask? If so, why and when? The Respiratory Ethics Framework (REF) herein proposes pathways to answers grounded in ethical norms and the moral principles of non-harm, beneficence and respect for personal autonomy. REF is a personal ethics wherein your ethical duty to increase your respiratory hygiene efforts—such as by donning a mask—is proportional to your estimation of an increase in the likelihood that your respiratory effluent …
