Alexander R. Mills received his Doctor of Pharmacy degree in May 2017 and has completed a PGY-1 community-based pharmacy practice resident with Walgreen Company and Purdue University College of Pharmacy. During his time at Purdue, he was heavily involved with Purdue’s chapter of The American Red Cross Club, serving as the president and coordinator of community outreach programs. Upon completing his PGY-1, he will continue to pursue his aspirations to care for the medically underserved while currently completing a PGY-2 residency specializing in ambulatory care and academia at the University of Mississippi in Jackson.

Allison Bates is a student in Purdue University’s Doctor of Pharmacy program with an anticipated graduation date of May 2019. Her future career aspirations are to practice in ambulatory care pharmacy or in an oncology setting. She has volunteered with the Joseph Maley Foundation since 2009 and with the “It’s My Closet” organization in Lafayette since 2014. This article describes her experience working as an intern with Dr. Dawn Moore, Vice President of Pharmacy and Chief Pharmacy Officer at IU Health.

Value-Added Services: Incorporating Pharmacy Students In A Hospital Setting, Megan Unger

Megan Unger, a PharmD candidate in her fourth professional year in the College of Pharmacy, completed an introductory pharmacy practice experience at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Indiana, during her third professional year. This was the third of thirteen experiential learning rotations that she will complete prior to graduation in 2019. Her future plans include pursuing a postgraduate residency training program. In this article, Megan highlights the value-added services that pharmacy students can provide to institutional pharmacy settings and the patients served.

Amanda Hornbach is a medical student at the Indiana University School of Medicine’s West Lafayette (IUSM–WL) campus. During the summer between her first and second years of medical school, Hornbach developed a one-time, interactive educational curriculum for children participating in a local summer-long lunch and educational series through the Food Finders Food Bank. NAMI on Campus at Purdue University is a collegiate branch of the national, grassroots organization called the National Alliance on Mental Illness. As an effort to address the growing need for mental health education, our organization piloted Indiana’s first Ending the Silence program. It is an educational outreach program focused on teaching local junior high and high school students about mental health through an informative and interactive curriculum. The Tumaini Children’s Drop-In Center is a daytime drop-in center for the street children of Eldoret, Kenya. It is part of a partnership between the Purdue University College of Pharmacy, the Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare program, Eldoret community members, and numerous individuals in both Kenya and the US. Through the efforts of local staff and Purdue student pharmacists, who work at the local hospital on an eight-week clinical rotation, the center has helped a population of nearly 400 local street children by providing a safe haven from life on the streets. The purpose of this project was to develop, pilot, assess, and describe a new interdisciplinary, game-based phone application. The application is intended to help health care students better communicate medication and medical terminology to their patients and to other health care providers and insurance companies. This IRB-approved project called “PharmPhrase” was developed using an application-development software program. The pilot involved multiple groups of competing teams composed of volunteer pharmacy students in their first professional years who were randomly assigned into teams of three to five. The authors of this article developed and piloted a three-week intensive elective course for students in their third professional years in the Doctor of Pharmacy program. The goal of this course was to provide students with an opportunity to apply patient safety concepts in a real-world setting using service-learning as the pedagogy and to evaluate student perceptions of the course for potential implementation in the curriculum. The advancement of global engagement opportunities will promote pharmacy students’ cultural awareness and sensitivity, expose students to treatment of diseases not commonly seen in modern Western medicine, and cultivate future leadership for the growth of global pharmacy practice. At Purdue University College of Pharmacy (PUCOP), limited opportunities exist for student pharmacists. As a result, identifying the needs and expanding student pharmacist access to global engagement experiences are critical to meet the changing needs of the US population. This article highlights two students’ experience on Timmy Global Health’s medical brigade to Quito, Ecuador. Timmy is a nonprofit, Indiana-based organization dedicated to advocacy, service, and fundraising on a domestic and global scale. Every year, Timmy sends a group of sixteen students and medical professionals to Quito, Ecuador, over Purdue’s spring break to treat people in underserved communities who otherwise would not have access to quality health care. In 2010, the United Nations established access to safe drinking water as a basic human right; however, many areas around the globe still lack access. The interdisciplinary service-learning course “Water Supply in Developing Countries” was established at Purdue in 2012 to address the complex issue of water insecurity around the world. The rate of food insecurity among Hoosier children is slightly above the national average. For many of these children, school lunches are their primary source of nutrition. During school breaks, these children are at risk of going hungry. The Purdue Nutrition Society partnered with Glen Acres Elementary School in Lafayette, Indiana, a school where, in 2016, 72.6% of students qualified for free or reduced lunches. Through the school, 20 students from low-income families were identified and chosen to receive food care packages over their spring break. In this article, Kelsey Herwick, a graduating senior in dietetics and nutrition, fitness, and health, describes her experience with Stand Down. The first ever Stand Down event occurred during the Vietnam War and had the purpose of giving soldiers in combat time to eat warm meals, attend to personal hygiene needs, and tend to any medical needs (MFRI, n.d.a).
