Modelling Cross-Disciplinary Integration In Fda Multidisciplinary And Interdisciplinary Reviews For New Drug Products: A Phenomenological Descriptive Comparative Case Study, Kevin Bugin

Doctor of Philosophy in Translational Health Sciences Dissertations

Cross-disciplinary integration is a key feature of interdisciplinary research and the collaborative form is often one of the desired outcomes of Team Science endeavors. In 2019 the FDA began rolling out a new interdisciplinary approach to their cross-disciplinary assessment of marketing applications, with the key feature being integrated, collaborative review documents (Woodcock et al., 2020). FDA’s assessment of new drug products to allow them to enter the marketplace is a critical translational activity to protect the US public’s health that requires team-based integration and transparency (Woodcock, 2018). And, while increased cross-disciplinary integration through enhanced collaboration and communication is sought through …

Months Into The Covid-19 Pandemic, Community Health Centers Report Signs Of Improvement, But Face Financial Uncertainty, Jessica Sharac, James Hernandez, Feygele Jacobs, Peter Shin

Geiger Gibson/RCHN Community Health Foundation Research Collaborative

Executive Summary:

This policy brief reports on the COVID-19 experience of the nation’s community health centers over a six-month period, utilizing data from the Health Resources and Services Administration’s (HRSA’s) weekly Health Center COVID-19 Survey from April 3rd, 2020 to October 2nd, 2020. The data demonstrate that community health centers were immediately responsive to the public health crisis, initiating diagnostic testing for the COVID-19 virus, and adapting care such as telehealth to address patient needs. However, with visits down overall and limited financial relief, the pandemic has taken an enormous financial toll on health centers. Cumulative patient revenue losses over …

Background: Early mobility is one of the main goals of the enhanced recovery after cesarean delivery, yet it is rarely objectively measured. Benefits related to this goal include mechanical prevention of deep venous thrombosis and early discharge.

Methods: We conducted a multi-center prospective study in which an activity tracker was utilized to measure the steps taken by patients after delivery. The primary outcome was steps taken after vaginal or cesarean delivery. Secondary outcomes was factors affecting ambulation (e.g pain/satisfaction with pain management and mode of delivery).

Results: Data from 50 postpartum patients were analyzed. Vaginal delivery patients took more cumulative …

Introduction: The opioid epidemic has launched the United States into a public health crisis, resulting in a greater emphasis on non-opioid multimodal pain control methods.

At our institution, postoperative posterior neck stiffness and myofascial pain is a common concern after anterior cervical discectomy and fusion or anterior cervical corpectomy with fusion surgery (hereinafter ACS), likely due to prolonged intraoperative positioning in neck extension. Studies have shown successful analgesic outcomes of trigger point injections with local anesthetic for generalized myofascial pain.1-2 This retrospective pilot study aimed to evaluate whether trigger point injections with bupivacaine decreases postsurgical pain compared with …

When Will I Get My Paper Back? A Replication Study Of Publication Timelines For Health Professions Education Research., Lauren A Maggio, William E Bynum, Deanna N Schreiber-Gregory, Steven J Durning, Anthony R. Artino

Health, Human Function, and Rehabilitation Sciences Faculty Publications

INTRODUCTION: Biomedical researchers have lamented the lengthy timelines from manuscript submission to publication and highlighted potential detrimental effects on scientific progress and scientists' careers. In 2015, Himmelstein identified the mean time from manuscript submission to acceptance in biomedicine as approximately 100 days. The length of publication timelines in health professions education (HPE) is currently unknown.

METHODS: This study replicates Himmelstein's work with a sample of 14 HPE journals published between 2008-2018. Using PubMed, 19,182 article citations were retrieved. Open metadata for each were downloaded, including the date the article was received by the journal, date the authors resubmitted revisions, date …

Sensors And Wearables In Oncology: A Study Of The Barriers And Facilitators To Adoption, Sam Hanna May 2020

Sensors And Wearables In Oncology: A Study Of The Barriers And Facilitators To Adoption, Sam Hanna

Doctor of Philosophy in Translational Health Sciences Dissertations

Innovation, although a subject of considerable debate (e.g., Baregheh et al., 2009; Christensen, 1997), can be defined as the introduction and dissemination of a new or a different idea into use or practice that drives impact (Solis and Sinfield, 2014). Many studies and editorials have highlighted the complexity of the United States health system and detailed the slow speed by which innovative ideas materialize into impactful innovations (Continuing America’s leadership (2017); England & Stewart (2007); Kannampallil, Schauer, Cohen & Patel (2011)). While there are many advances in sensor and wearable technologies in this instance, the adoption rate by oncologists has …

The Positivism Paradigm Of Research., Yoon Soo Park, Lars Konge, Anthony R. Artino May 2020

The Positivism Paradigm Of Research., Yoon Soo Park, Lars Konge, Anthony R. Artino

Health, Human Function, and Rehabilitation Sciences Faculty Publications

Research paradigms guide scientific discoveries through their assumptions and principles. Understanding paradigm-specific assumptions helps illuminate the quality of findings that support scientific studies and identify gaps in generating sound evidence. This article focuses on the research paradigm of positivism, examining its definition, history, and assumptions (ontology, epistemology, axiology, methodology, and rigor). Positivism is aligned with the hypothetico-deductive model of science that builds on verifying a priori hypotheses and experimentation by operationalizing variables and measures; results from hypothesis testing are used to inform and advance science. Studies aligned with positivism generally focus on identifying explanatory associations or causal relationships through quantitative …

Implementation Of A Provider In Triage Program In A Level Iii Emergency Department, Rachel Parmer Mph, Msn, Fnp- Bc Apr 2020

Implementation Of A Provider In Triage Program In A Level Iii Emergency Department, Rachel Parmer Mph, Msn, Fnp- Bc

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background: This project implemented a Provider in Triage (PIT) system in a small emergency department (ED) in Washington State. The employment of a PIT to decrease patient waiting time and improve ED flow was supported by a literature review. A needs assessment was conducted, which indicated potential benefit from a PIT system, particularly because several ED metrics are worse than national average.

Aims/Objectives: This project aimed to develop, implement, and evaluate a PIT system by employing ED Advanced Practice Clinicians (APCs). The objectives consist of evaluating the impact of a PIT system on the percentage of patients who leave without …

Implementing The Ami Readmits Risk Assessment Score Within A Referral Protocol To Increase Referrals For Follow-Up Among Patients With Type I Myocardial Infarction, Nailya Muganlinskaya, M.S.N., M.P.H., Acnp-Bc, Dnp Graduate Apr 2020

Implementing The Ami Readmits Risk Assessment Score Within A Referral Protocol To Increase Referrals For Follow-Up Among Patients With Type I Myocardial Infarction, Nailya Muganlinskaya, M.S.N., M.P.H., Acnp-Bc, Dnp Graduate

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background: The hospital’s post- myocardial infarction (MI) referral protocol does not address patient risk characteristics. Referrals to a post- MI clinic have been lower than expected. Evidence suggests the AMI READMITS score can predict readmissions within 30 days after discharge among patients with acute MI.

Aim: This quality improvement study evaluated a referral protocol that integrated the AMI READMIT score to increase appropriate referrals after discharge.

Methods: Patient chart data was analyzed to assess changes in referrals and timely follow-up from pre-intervention to intervention. A survey assessed providers’ satisfaction with the new referral protocol.

Results: Among 57 patients (n=29 pre-intervention; …

Increasing Adult Influenza Vaccination Rates In The Primary Care Setting, Leah Prescott Msn, Fnp-Bc Apr 2020

Increasing Adult Influenza Vaccination Rates In The Primary Care Setting, Leah Prescott Msn, Fnp-Bc

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background: Provision of vaccinations is one of the most basic interventions aimed at health promotion and disease prevention in the primary care setting. Despite increased public awareness and improved access to vaccinations through minute-clinic settings, health fairs, and employer-offered vaccination clinics, adults in the United States continue to fall short of national goals. Literature demonstrates vaccination rates among adults vary widely and may be affected by a multitude of factors, however vaccination rates may be greatly improved with increased provider engagement.

Objectives: The purpose of this project was to develop, implement, and evaluate a program to improve immunization rates in …
