Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The gastro-intestinal (GI) organs of 50 sheep randomly selected from local abattoirs in the Burdur region were investigated between September 2000 and August 2001 for the prevalence of GI nematodes and their larval forms and the seasonal fluctuations of these parasites. All the animals examined were infected (100%) with GI nematodes. Twenty-two nematode species were identified and 38,639 nematodes were collected from the infected sheep. The number of parasites per sheep ranged from 11 to 5052 (mean 772.78), while the number of nematode species per animal ranged from 1 to 12 (mean 5.98). Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The intensive care units (ICUs) are burdened with a high frequency of nosocomial infections often caused by multiresistant nosocomial pathogens. Pseudomonas aeruginosa has emerged as one of the most problematic Gram-negative pathogens. The objective of this study was to identify frequency of Pseudomonas aeruginosa from the various clinical samples in ICUs, and to investigate resistance patterns against various antibiotics widely used for treatment. This study was carried out between September 2000-September 2002. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed by the disc diffusion method according to NCCLS (National Commitee for Clinical and Laboratory Standards) guidelines. The following antibiotics were tested: imipenem, meropenem, …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Oral cancers are malignancies that have high metastasis potential and thus survival rate of the patients is low. Today, epidemiological studies are being widely conducted on precancerous lesions, defined as predecessor lesions. In order to investigate the prevalence of oral precancerous lesions among Turkish people, 2000 consecutive outpatients who referred to our clinic for routine dental treatment, were examined. The proportion of lesions with potential to transform into cancer was 4.0%. It was concluded that leukoplakia and lichen planus were the most commonly observed precancerous lesions. All lesions had male propensity and the most affected site was the buccal mucosa. …

The detection limit of the PCR was assessed by spiking a known negative milk sample with a dilution series (1x10 9 to 10 bacteria/ml) of reference M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis culture). In the agarose gel examination of the PCR amplified products, approximately 50 bacteria/ml were detected. In the examination …

Estimation Of The Prevalence Of A Disease From Screening Tests, Ergun Karaağaoğlu Jan 1999

Estimation Of The Prevalence Of A Disease From Screening Tests, Ergun Karaağaoğlu

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Since most secreening tests are not 100% accurate, the proportion of subjects screened positive in such a test cannot be used as an estimate of the population prevalence. Methods which take sensitivity and the specificity into consideration should be employed in such circumstances. Estimation of the population prevalence as defined by Gartand Buck may produce results which are outside the range of 0 to 1. A Bayesian approach avoids results of this kind, but requires complicated computations. Lew and Levy proposed an approximation to the Bayesian estimate of the population prevalence. To simplify the computations, I propose a method which …
