Strategy is about decision malting, long-term impacts, integration and focus, the implementation of decisions, creating value for customers and key stakeholders, and outperforming competitors. The strategic process may begin with an external and internal environmental analysis, from which an identification of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) can be made. A visual representation of this process is …

An Interdisciplinary Approach In Identifying The Legitimate Regulator Of Anti-Doping In Sport: The Case Of The Australian Football League, Lisa Gowthorp, Annette Greenhow, Danny O'Brien

Danny O'Brien

The regulation of anti-doping practices in Australian sport is overseen by the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA), which is a statutory authority funded by the Australian Commonwealth Government (ACG). The 2013 ASADA investigation into the Essendon Football Club (EFC) uncovered the alleged use of performance and image enhancing drugs by a number of players and support personnel. However, despite the call for sanctions to be placed on those taking banned substances, ASADA itself became the central focus of enquiry with the EFC questioning the legitimacy of ASADA's authority in their management of the investigation. Using content analysis and Bourdieu's conceptual …

Regulating "Nirvana": Sustainable Surf Tourism In A Climate Of Increasing Regulation, Jess Ponting, Danny O'Brien

Danny O'Brien

Indonesia’s Mentawai Islands are widely regarded as a surfer’s‘ “Nirvana.’’ This paper uses qualitative interviews and participant observation to explore the politics of surf tourism recreational capacity management in the Mentawais, and the wider implications for Mentawaian host communities’ involvement in the surf tourism economy. While much of the Mentawaian surf tourism industry was vehemently opposed to a recently introduced capacity management model, the market responded favourably. There appear to be immediate advantages for government and local communities in incentivising low-volume, high-yield land-based surf tourism development, and social carrying capacity measures such as vocational training and cultural interchange emerge as …

Liberalizing Nirvana: An Analysis Of The Consequences Of Common Pool Resource Deregulation For The Sustainability Of Fiji’S Surf Tourism Industry, Jess Ponting, Danny O'Brien

Danny O'Brien

In July 2010, the Fijian government issued a decree that liberalized Fiji’s surf breaks and deregulated its surf tourism industry. It did this by canceling licenses that granted resorts exclusive use of surf breaks based on indigenous customary ownership of foreshore and fringing reef fishing areas as common pool resources. This paper analyses the sustainability of surf tourism in Fiji, utilizing a developing framework for sustainable surf tourism. Based on broader sustainable tourism theory and empirical research, the framework considers (1) the impact of economic neo-liberalism, (2) the need for coordinated planning and limits to growth, (3) the advantages of …

Sport events benefiting a charitable cause have emerged as meaningful experiences for participants. These charity sport events may allow event sponsors to shape perceptions of corporate image among event participants. Using the Psychological Continuum Model (PCM) as the theoretical framework, the factors that contribute to participants' perceptions of event sponsors are examined. The influence of this image of event sponsors on behavioral outcomes among participants is also investigated. A post-event questionnaire was administered to participants in a sport event (A^ = 672) to investigate the relationships among motives, sponsor image, event attachment, purchase intent, and future participation intent. Results reveal …
