Escherichia coli is the most common bacterium that has been isolated from the bacterial culture of uterine and fecal samples of dogs with pyometra. The aim of the present study was to determine whether this organism could be relevant to the pathogenesis of pyometra in dogs. Fecal and uterine samples were collected from 17 bitches with pyometra. E. coli strains were isolated in all samples. The status of populations of anchovies in Turkish terrestrial waters was preliminarily investigated using morphometric characters with the truss network system. Samples were taken from the main fishing areas of each sea, comprising the central (Sinop) and eastern (Trabzon) Black Sea, the Aegean Sea (İzmir) and the eastern Mediterranean (İskenderun). Plotting discriminant functions 1 and 2, explaining 93% of between-group variability, revealed a high degree of dissimilarity among the anchovy samples, indicating that the anchovies in each sea represent different aggregations. This study was carried out between January 1996 and December 1997 in Kayaboğazı Dam Lake. During this period 424 specimens were examined. The age of females and males ranged from I to VII. The fork length and weight of females and males were 102-277 mm and 15-377.02 g and 125-274 mm and 27-369.02 g, respectively. There was no statistically significant difference between females and males in terms of body length and weight.The sex ratio (male:female) was 0.947:1. This study was conducted to determine the effect of dietary probiotic supplementation on growth performance in the rock partridge. One hundred 1-day-old chicks were used. They were divided into 2 groups and each group was divided into 5 replicate groups containing 10 chicks. One group served as the control, while the other group was the treatment group fed 0.15% probiotic (Lactobacillus bulgaricus) in the diet. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between antibiotic resistance patterns among Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica Serovar Enteritidis isolates (Salmonella Enteritidis) of human and poultry origin. Antibiotic resistance of 97 Salmonella Enteritidis isolates from 25 chicken meat, 25 chicken intestine and 47 human fecal samples was examined using the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS, 1997) disk diffusion method. Resistance patterns of the isolates were as follows: Of the 25 chicken meat isolates 4 were resistant to some antibiotics. The anaesthetic and cardiopulmonary effects of medetomidine-ketamine (MK) and xylazine-ketamine (XK) combinations were compared in rabbits. A total of 18 rabbits were randomly assigned to 2 different groups. The rabbits in the MK group (n = 9) were given 0.25 mg/kg of medetomidine and 50 mg/kg of ketamine intramuscularly. The XK group was given 4 mg/kg of xylazine and 50 mg/kg of ketamine via the same route. Crude and excretory/secretory (E/S) antigens of Fasciola hepatica were subjected to SDS-PAGE and Western blot analysis in order to identify protein bands that would enable the specific and sensitive immunodiagnosis of sheep. Sera from 20 sheep with natural infections of F. hepatica, Dicrocoelium dendriticum, Cyst hydatid, Cysticercus tenuicollis, Trichostrongylidae, Paramphistomum spp., and Trichuris spp. and the same number of sera naturally infected with the same helminths without F. hepatica were tested using Western blotting, and the bands obtained from positive and negative groups were compared. This case was determined accidentally in a 1.5-year-old, cross-breed male dog during a necropsy for an experimental study conducted in our laboratory, following a clinical examination as well as haematological, biochemical and urine analyses. Since the total of 150,000 doses of attenuated cell culture vaccine doses produced anually in Turkey does not meet the requirements of the country, by reducing the number of vaccine cells in a single dose, an increased number of vaccine doses was obtained for cattle, and doses consisting of different numbers of vaccine cells were tested according to their protective efficiency against tropical theileriosis in cattle. Some growth properties of the brown trout Salmo trutta macrostigma (Dumeril, 1858) in Tekederesi, which is a branch feeding the Karasu River, were investigated. The age composition of the population varied between I and V. The population was 64.81% female and 35.19% male and the differences between the sexes were statistcally significant (P < 0.05). The mean fork length and mean body weight of the 54 individuals examined were 16.58 cm and 53.15 g, respectively. The differences between the sexes according to age groups for fork length and total weight were not statistically significant (P > 0.05). The specific and relative growth for length and weight were maximum at the second age. The length-weight relationship of the population was calculated by the least squares method and the logarithmic equation was found to be Log W = -1.4684 + 2.590 Log FL (fork length). …

The Effect Of Grower Diet Protein Level On The Performance And Some Slaughtering Characteristics Of Sex-Separated And Mixed- Sex Broilers, Veysel Ayhan, Mehmet Bozkurt, Kami̇l Küçükyilmaz

This trial examined 1350 sex-separated broilers at 24 days of age. Chicks were fed standard broiler starter diet for the first 21 days. Isocaloric grower diets (16.84%, 18.00% and 19.46% crude protein, respectively) were offered to broilers housed in sex-separated and mixed-sex pens from days 24 to 45 of the experimental period. While the body weights of sex-separated and mixed-sex broilers were similar, diet protein level and sex had a significant effect on the body weight of broilers during the experimental period (P < 0.01). Male broilers consumed more feed and had better feed conversion than females (P < 0.01). However, separate sex rearing had no significant effect on feed consumption or feed conversion rate (P > 0.05). The anaesthetic effects of quinaldine sulphate (QS) together with diazepam (D) on tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) (20-25 g) were studied at different temperatures. The application of QS with D significantly increased the anesthesia level of QS in the fish. Depending on temperature, the fish entered light or deep anesthesia levels with the use of QS alone at 10 or 35 mg/l, compared to 5 or 20 mg/l when used together with D (1-2 mg/l). An investigation was carried out to determine whether transmission of passive immunity from the mother to the fry occurred in the guppy, Poecilia reticulata. Female guppies were immunized by an intraperitoneal injection of formalin-killed Aeromonas hydrophila bacterin. Agglutinating antibody titers and the precipitating antibody in the body fluid of female guppies and their fry were investigated. The protection against the A. hydrophila pathogen by maternal immunity was also tested. Four weeks after immunization, 14 fry from immunized and nonimmunized females were challenged with 5-min exposure to a virulent A. hydrophila at dosages of 1 x 10^7 cfu/ml. Some growth properties of 407 specimens of the mirror carp population introduced into Gelingüllü Dam Lake between 1998 and 2000 were studied in order to determine changes in growth over time. The data obtained were compared with those of other populations of the same species in other regions of Turkey. The age of the mirror carp in Gelingüllü Dam Lake ranged between I and V. The quality of imported mackerel (Scomber scombrus Linnaeus, 1758) was examined and the effect of different thawing methods on the quality was determined. The frozen samples were taken from 3 points: the first depot, the second depot and the retail sellers. The study was carried out in duplicate. The quality of the samples was determined according to sensory, chemical and microbiological analyses. It was determined that the 3 different thawing procedures (in water, at room temperature and in a refrigerator) did not change the quality significantly. The molecular weight and kinetic properties of pyruvate kinase purified from human normal and tumor breast tissues were studied and the activity levels of pyruvate kinase from normal and tumor breast tissues were compared. The presence of 2 forms of pyruvate kinase in human breast tissue was demonstrated by DEAE Sephadex A-50 chromatography. In this study, the growth and viability status of Listeria monocytogenes were investigated during the ripening and storage period of sucuk (Turkish dry fermented sausage) produced using different lactic acid bacteria (Lactobacillus plantarum Lb 8 and L. plantarum Lb 75, Pediococcus acidilactici Lb 626, P. pentosaceus Lb 1010, L. sakei 706 and L. sakei 706-B). The effects of different nitrite doses (50, 100, 150 and 200 ppm NaNO_2) and starter culture (Lactobacillus plantarum + Staphylococcus carnosus, a commercial preparation) on the growth of Listeria monocytogenes in sucuk (Turkish dry fermented sausage) were investigated.
