The article presents a comprehensive overview of dance/movement therapy philosophies and principles as it applies to individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities. This thesis aims to identify and investigate humor as a therapeutic resource in connection with the dance/movement therapy process. Laughter is a universal form of expression. This theoretical based study highlights laughter as a tool for enhancing relationships, and supporting both mental and physical health. Laughter is a component in dance/movement therapy, but the research is lacking on the implementation and advantages of humor within the practice.

This thesis explores how Dance/Movement Therapy can support children in palliative care, and provide models for the role of the dance/movement therapist using superhero imagery. The work of five dance/movement therapy pioneers, Marian Chace, Liljan Espenak, Blanche Evan, Trudi Schoop, and Mary Starks Whitehouse, and one foundational theorist, Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen are discussed and used as models for the development of dance/movement therapy archetypal superheroes. Case material from a dance/movement therapist’s work in a pediatric palliative care setting is used to illustrate the application of the superhero model.

This thesis explores the benefits of using hip-hop culture and cyphering within dance/movement therapy. Beginning with a discussion of hip-hop culture, the thesis describes how break dancing and the cypher developed in New York City in response to violence and environmental uncertainty. These forms continue to provide a crucial element of communication and non-verbal expression among at-risk youth. The thesis suggests that hip-hop may be used as a culturally sensitive form of therapy for adolescents, and examines the benefits of the integration of the cypher into dance/movement therapy practice.

Unreasonable amounts of force used during police-civilian interactions have led to a significant number of arrest related deaths. The Department of Justice identified lack of effective training as a key factor in the use of force. This thesis investigates the current state of officer training programs and identifies deficits in focus on emotion regulation, stress management and interpersonal skills. The role of dance/movement therapy in developing these skills is discussed.

This thesis will focus on an internship project designed to integrate dance/movement therapy into the Early Childhood Center (ECC) at Sarah Lawrence College. This thesis examines the role of grounding in the evolution of individual presence and group relatedness often experienced in dance/movement therapy sessions. The physical and psychological concepts of grounding are discussed, investigating the relationship between the body and gravity as a foundational piece for one’s sense of being in the world. The felt experience of the body in communication with gravity, awareness of these sensations, and the resources within the body associated with grounding are examined as they apply to presence and interconnectivity. These concepts, as well as the potential for self-discovery via grounding, are portrayed through case examples.

This paper examines how a therapist’s embodied experience of the natural world can provide a foundation for utilizing a nature-based dance/movement therapy with medically fragile children in long term care. Beginning with a reflection on her childhood experiences in nature, the author then discusses the literature on the impact of nature on human development and the implications of loss of contact with nature. Reading the book Caught Falling (Koteen and Smith, 2008) led me to explore and reflect on the relationship between touch and movement in Contact Improvisation. This thesis also integrates and examines Body-Mind Centering research (Cohen, 1993) in relation to Caught Falling in order to fully understand how touch and movement offer psychotherapeutic benefits. Although different from Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT), Contact Improvisation has elements that are relevant to DMT practice. These include connection, attunement and development. Case examples are introduced to highlight the benefits of attuned movement for connection and transformation.

The purpose of this thesis was to promote the understanding of liturgical dance, explore how liturgical dance can be integrated into a dance/movement therapy session, and determine whether elements of liturgical dance can be used in a clinical setting to support resilience, especially with African-American children who are dealing the effects of complex trauma. This study was based on an intervention done with twenty-four blind and visually impaired Nepalese children using Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT). Since this was the first DMT intervention offered to them, the study focused on their response to DMT. The children were videotaped in their interactions, and interviewed about their experience and participation. The participants were selected through purposive sampling, divided in three age groups, and observed over the span of eight consecutive days. The sessions lasted between 30 and 60 minutes, during which the different groups were involved in several activities. The dance/movement therapy sessions were well received by the …
