This paper explores type 1 diabetes (T1D) and the risk factors associated from its diagnosis. In particular, this paper addresses the onset of T1D in adolescence, which is a developmental period riddled with its own challenges. T1D is a chronic, autoimmune disease that affects the body’s ability to produce insulin. Unregulated, T1D affects the body in numerous ways and can ultimately lead to death. Research has suggested that children diagnosed with T1D should employ an integrated treatment team to account for the physical and emotional struggles that come from living with the disease. One in three women in the United States has experienced physical abuse by an intimate partner (NCADV, 2015). Nearly half of all women in the US have experienced psychological aggression by an intimate partner (Black, et al., 2010). Survivors of domestic violence commonly face long-term psychological damage because of the abuse, which can lead to negative social implications throughout their lifetime. Illnesses stemming from abuse include post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and anxiety, and can further result in low self-esteem, or being unable to trust others and build healthy social or romantic relationships (Black et al., 2010). This is a theoretical based study that focuses on the current disempowered state of Hispanic female adolescents in the United States. As the largest minority group in the country, Hispanics experience an array of issues that commonly plague minority populations, such as higher poverty levels and unemployment, substance abuse, increased school dropout rates, and lower accessibility to quality education and healthcare (American Psychological Association, 2013; McCaffrey, 2007). Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy (EFP) is a form of therapy that utilizes a team approach of a psychotherapist, an equine specialist and a horse or horses, all working together to aid individuals in experiencing personal emotional healing and growth. It can be particularly effective when there are barriers to communication. Grooming, leading and riding horses can provide opportunities for self-awareness and attunement to others. This thesis discusses the unique experience of veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the longest running military conflicts in United States history. Specifically, it explores how the focus on a diagnosis of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) leaves many veterans without treatment, despite the presence of significant symptoms resulting from extended and repeated deployment in these war zones. This thesis aims to identify and investigate humor as a therapeutic resource in connection with the dance/movement therapy process. Laughter is a universal form of expression. This theoretical based study highlights laughter as a tool for enhancing relationships, and supporting both mental and physical health. Laughter is a component in dance/movement therapy, but the research is lacking on the implementation and advantages of humor within the practice.

This thesis explores how Dance/Movement Therapy can support children in palliative care, and provide models for the role of the dance/movement therapist using superhero imagery. The work of five dance/movement therapy pioneers, Marian Chace, Liljan Espenak, Blanche Evan, Trudi Schoop, and Mary Starks Whitehouse, and one foundational theorist, Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen are discussed and used as models for the development of dance/movement therapy archetypal superheroes. Case material from a dance/movement therapist’s work in a pediatric palliative care setting is used to illustrate the application of the superhero model.

Dance/movement therapy (DMT) is a strengths-based therapeutic intervention that focuses on the mind-body connection and its role in behavior, expression, cognition, and communication. Dance has served a purpose beyond entertainment for thousands of years – even, and especially, before recorded history. Cultures worldwide developed dances to celebrate, to mourn, to worship, and to work. This thesis explores the benefits of using hip-hop culture and cyphering within dance/movement therapy. Beginning with a discussion of hip-hop culture, the thesis describes how break dancing and the cypher developed in New York City in response to violence and environmental uncertainty. These forms continue to provide a crucial element of communication and non-verbal expression among at-risk youth. The thesis suggests that hip-hop may be used as a culturally sensitive form of therapy for adolescents, and examines the benefits of the integration of the cypher into dance/movement therapy practice.

Unreasonable amounts of force used during police-civilian interactions have led to a significant number of arrest related deaths. The Department of Justice identified lack of effective training as a key factor in the use of force. This thesis investigates the current state of officer training programs and identifies deficits in focus on emotion regulation, stress management and interpersonal skills. The role of dance/movement therapy in developing these skills is discussed.
