Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Background: Nurses comprise the largest portion of the healthcare workforce worldwide. However, nurse representation in the leadership of clinical research and research funding is largely unknown. The Australasian Nursing and Midwifery Clinical Trials Network was established to provide a coordinated network, focussed on building research capacity in nursing and midwifery. To support this work, this scoping review of nurse-led randomised controlled trials was conducted to summarise research activity, as well as highlight future research directions, gaps and resources. Midwife-led trials will be reported elsewhere. Aim: To quantify number, type and quality of nurse-led randomised controlled trials registered between 2000–2021. Design: …

Development And Psychometric Analysis Of The Roy Adaptation Modes Scale (Rams) To Measure Coping And Adaptation, Sandra A. Russo

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Peoples’ lives are often interrupted or changed by experiencing a serious illness. It is important to study and understand the various coping processes that people have in adapting to illness. The purpose of this study was to develop an instrument to measure a person’s coping response to illness-related stimuli using the Roy Adaptation Model (RAM) as its structure and framework. This study is quantitative descriptive design to develop the validity and reliability of a new instrument the Roy Adaptation Modes Scale (RAMS). A review of RAM based measurement instruments found no instrument that measured all four adaptive modes that is …

Information Literacy Training To Improve Nursing Care At The Bedside: Librarian Participation In An Evidence-Based Practice Pilot And Beyond., Basia Delawska-Elliott

Basia Delawska-Elliott, MLIS, AHIP

Objectives: To support hospital-based nursing education programs, teaching information literacy to enhance evidence-based practice and promote nursing research.

Methods: Health sciences librarians are increasingly involved in educational programs designed to introduce evidence-based practice concepts to nurses. When a pilot Evidence-Based Boot Camp was proposed at Providence St. Vincent, a 4-time Magnet-designated hospital, the librarian was asked to join the instructor and mentor panel. The librarian’s contribution consisted of co-presenting the introduction to EBP, searching literature and appraising the evidence; providing tailored hands-on small-group search training; and helping nurse teams apply the evidence to EBP projects. At the conclusion of the …

Dna Methylation Patterns In Cord Blood Of Neonates Across Gestational Age Association With Cell-Type Proportions, Susan M. Braid, Kwame Okrah, Amol Shetty, Hector Corrada Bravo

Nursing Faculty Publications

Background: A statistical methodology is available to estimate the proportion of cell types (cellular heterogeneity) in adult whole blood specimens used in epigenome-wide association studies (EWAS). However, there is no methodology to estimate the proportion of cell types in umbilical cord blood (also a heterogeneous tissue) used in EWAS.

Objectives: The objectives of this study were to determine whether differences in DNA methylation (DNAm) patterns in umbilical cord blood are the result of blood cell type proportion changes that typically occur across gestational age and to demonstrate the effect of cell type proportion confounding by comparing preterm infants exposed and …

Financial assistance is necessary for sustaining research at universities. Business collaborations are a potential means for obtaining these funds. To secure funding, understanding the process for obtaining these business funds is important for nursing faculty members. Although faculty rarely request funding from businesses, they are often in a position to solicit financial support due to existing relationships with clinical agency administrators, staff, and community leaders. The economic support received from businesses provides outcomes in nursing research, research education, academic–service partnerships, and client health care. This article describes the steps and processes involved in successfully obtaining research funding from businesses. In …

We respond to commentaries from the American Academy of Nursing, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, and the National Institute of Nursing Research on our thoughts about integrating emerging areas of science into nursing PhD programs. We identify areas of agreement and focus our response on cross-cutting issues arising from cautions about the unique focus of nursing science and how best to proceed with incorporation of emerging areas of science into nursing PhD programs.

The Power Of Story: Narrative Inquiry As A Methodology In Nursing Research, Carol C. Wang, Sara K. Geale Jan 2015

The Power Of Story: Narrative Inquiry As A Methodology In Nursing Research, Carol C. Wang, Sara K. Geale

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

The aim of this paper is to explore the essential elements and value of narrative inquiry in nursing research. We propose that understanding a previous experience allows the nurse researcher an "insider view" and hence a deeper understanding of the issues that arise in the relationship between participant and researcher. We suggest that narrative inquiry in nursing research offers a particular way of caring about how knowledge is produced. Nursing science would benefit from the understanding that health and nursing practices are dynamic processes characterized by the continuous interaction of human thought and behaviour that continuously 'pumps' into personal, social …

Quality Advancement in Nursing Education - Avancées en formation infirmière

The preponderance of nursing research conducted in the United States occurs in schools of nursing. Accordingly, a major role for academic leaders in nursing education is the development of a resource base to support and expand the research mission of the nursing program. The intersection of research and practice is also an essential element for assuring the relevance of nursing research and advancing the application of the evidence generated by nursing scientists. The following paper presents an introduction to nursing research in the U.S. with an emphasis on the educational and operational resources needed to maintain a robust research enterprise …

Teaching Information Literacy Skills To Undergraduate Nursing Students: A Collaborative Approach, Suzanne Zentz, Kimberly Whalen

Kimberly J. Whalen

Background

An expectation of baccalaureate nursing education is to prepare nurses to implement evidenced-based practice (EBP). This expectation extends far beyond a basic understanding of the research process. BSN prepared nurses must be able to effectively and efficiently identify, analyze, and synthesize evidence (AACN, 2008). The acquisition of information literacy skills is foundational to the development of EBP.

Implementation

The study took place at a College of Nursing within a mid-sized, faith-based university located in the Midwest. Historically, students enrolled in their senior level undergraduate nursing research/EBP course underwent one library instruction session with the nursing librarian to reinforce search …

Articles

The use of portable mobile devices has facilitated timely communication among healthcare team members. It's now a common practice for hospital-owned mobile phones to be shared among healthcare employees from shift to shift. Despite the benefit of increased, timely communication between caregivers, sharing mobile devices can lead to the spread of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). This article looks at the efficacy of two types of cleaning products on shared mobile phones carried by RNs at a 489-bed, Magnet-designated, Midwestern regional medical center. The cleaning methods evaluated were 70% isopropyl alcohol wipes and ethyl alcohol wipes.

The Benefits Of Undergraduate Research Assistantships In Nursing, Ryoko Pentecost

Student Research Initiative

Specific Aims:The specific aim of this study was to explore student nurses’ perceptions of the benefits of being an undergraduate research assistant.

Background: Undergraduate student nurses gain benefits from collaborating outside of the classroom with faculty as a research assistant. Students can explore the faculty role of researcher through their experiences, and these experiences may encourage students to become faculty in the future. Boise State University School of Nursing (BSU SON) students have been encouraged to participate with faculty members through the Faculty-Student Research Support Initiative, funded by the DeMeyer Endowment. Through this research experience, undergraduate research assistants from BSU …

Kerry Dhakal, MAA, MLS, AHIP

Objective: To develop a librarian liaison role for the Inova Health System’s Nursing Research Councils. In addition, the project aims to establish and improve connections with all nurses conducting research at Inova facilities.

Methods: Through a process of needs assessment, collaboration on research activities, outreach, teaching activities, and promotion this project promoted awareness and usage of library services by members of the nursing research councils. The librarian liaison works directly with each of the six nursing research councils to inform them of the library’s services and resources specific to their needs and goals.
