Hospitals in a nonprofit mountain west corporation conducted a gap analysis to determine readiness for Magnet Recognition. Major gaps included nursing research and availability of consultation and resources for research. Based on the findings, the development of a dynamic research program promoting nursing research and evidence-based practice within hospitals was undertaken. A nursing research council was reestablished with representatives from service and academia. A literature review and analysis of corporate/academia resources were completed. To identify the incidence and correlates of physical and sexual violence among HIV-infected women at risk for pregnancy, a cross-sectional examination was conducted within a longitudinal study of reproductive decision making. Participants consisted of 275 HIVinfected women 17 to 49 years of age (mean = 30.1 years).Women were predominantly African American (87%) and single (82%), with annual incomes of $10,000 or less (66%). Overall, 68% of the women reported experiencing lifetime physical and/or sexual violence. Before becoming HIV infected, 65% of the women reported having been physically or sexually abused. After HIV diagnosis, 33% of the women reported experiencing physical …

BACKGROUND: Although research consistently indicates harmful effects of mismanaged anger, little attention has been given to age differences in the experience and expression of this emotion. It is plausible that, with age and experience, people have less intense anger or learn to manage it more constructively.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this project was to examine age differences in anger frequency, intensity, and expression in a nonclinical sample of students, faculty, and staff who participated in a health fair at a large southeastern university.

Purpose: To present exemplars of physical activity research in nursing, illustrate the importance of physical activity research across the lifespan, and recommend directions for theory development and research.

Methods: Studies of physical activity and exercise currently being conducted by nurse investigators were reported and critiqued by attendees of the Midwest Nursing Research Society 2000 Preconference session entitled “Promoting Physical Activity Among Diverse Groups Across the Health Continuum.” Physical activity and exercise literature during the past decade was reviewed. Databases searched included Medline, CINAHL, Wilson, and ERIC.

Participants were predominantly single (82.2%), African American women (86.7%) with annual incomes of less than $10,000 (65.5%), with a mean age of 31.2 years. Using the Family Apgar Scale as a measure of perceived family functioning, women reported that their families functioned moderately well. Multiple regression analysis showed that level of education, life satisfaction, and coping through avoidance and coping by seeking social support were positively associated with family functioning. In contrast, a history of interpersonal verbal violence …

Anxiety is a universal problem for individuals with AIDS because the disease creates uncertainty and disruptions in every aspect of their lives. Nurses have a wide variety of holistic interventions to help persons living with AIDS (PLWAs) manage anxiety. Orem’s self-care theory of nursing provides a framework for assessing, diagnosing, planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing care for an HIV-infected person experiencing anxiety. This article presents an overview of anxiety, the nature of anxiety in HIV-infected individuals, and psychological, pharmacological, and holistic interventions to assist the client in self-care of anxiety.

Nursing patient classification systems have been in use in some form since Florence Nightingale first arranged her patients in wards (Giovanetti, 1978). Prospective classification systems which have been implemented in hospitals now generate billing information, staff budgets and long-range financial forecasts (Giovanetti, 1978; Alward, 1983; Edwardson and Giovanetti, 1987). Quantitative analysis using at-test indicated a significant difference in mean acuity scores in the prospective and retrospective data which pointed to a retrospective system as being more appropriate for billing, budgeting and finance decisions. Spearman's correlation analysis did not demonstrate a strong correlation between any indicators or with total acuity. Several …
