Ethical Challenges And Solutions Involved In Reviewing A Protocol With Sex Offenders As Participants: The Concerns And Solutions Identified For Protecting A Highly Controversial Population, Hila Berger, Amy Krenzer, Nicole Bryan
Presentations and Proceedings
In reviewing research, the three basic tenets IRBs are expected to abide by are beneficence, justice and respect for persons. The IRB was challenged in meeting these tenets during the course of a recent review. Given the highly controversial participant population of sex offenders and the methodology initially proposed, there were a multitude of ethical challenges uncovered that required unique solutions. The protocol presented to the IRB was developed to investigate the use of networked technologies and communications for the purpose of human trafficking. To do so the researchers proposed recruiting “Johns” or individuals convicted of soliciting sex and interviewing …

A Transformative Experience For Occupational Therapy Students In A Simulated Learning Environment, Kitsum Li, Barbara Mccamish
Collected Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Simulation is being integrated into nursing and medical curriculum nationally and it is well integrated into the Nursing program at Dominican University of California, However, use of simulation in allied health professionals is only an emerging practice. The aim of this program is to integrate simulation into the OT curriculum in order to facilitate the development of therapy foundation skill.
Identifying And Describing The Network Of Health, Education, And Social Service Non-Profit Organizations In Southern Nevada, Shannon M. Monnat, Anna Smedley
Identifying And Describing The Network Of Health, Education, And Social Service Non-Profit Organizations In Southern Nevada, Shannon M. Monnat, Anna Smedley
Lincy Institute Reports and Briefs
Many of the economic, social, and demographic issues facing southern Nevada are dynamic and interrelated, requiring a coordinated approach on the part of southern Nevada’s non‐profit community. The coordination of services, skills, and talents enables community needs to be addressed in ways that exceed the scope and capacity of any single organization. With the increasing desire of funding organizations to support collaborative efforts, maintaining sustainable connections between southern Nevada’s non‐profit organizations is needed now more than ever before.
This is the first comprehensive study of southern Nevada’s health, education, and social service non‐profit network. Via a web‐based survey of nearly …

Understanding The Process By Which A Healthy Population Seeks Nutrition And Exercise Information, Sally Hillis
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Faced with an overwhelming amount of available sources and different perspectives, researchers in the field of Nutrition and Health Sciences continually strive to identify key factors that shape a healthy lifestyle. Employing a qualitative methods design, this pilot study research project utilized a constructivist grounded theory approach to develop a model explaining the process by which healthy individuals acquire nutrition and exercise information. This model rests on the philosophical views and actions of participants in seeking meaningful and reliable sources guiding their decision-making strategies and offers a more complete understanding of this process. Implications of this research would be to …

The Predictive Validity Of Selection For Entry Into Postgraduate Training In General Practice: Evidence From Three Longitudinal Studies, Fiona Patterson, Filip Lievens, Maire Kerrin, Neil Munro, Bill Irish
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Background: The selection methodology for UK general practice is designed to accommodate several thousand applicants per year and targets six core attributes identified in a multi-method job-analysis study. Aim: To evaluate the predictive validity of selection methods for entry into postgraduate training, comprising a clinical problem-solving test, a situational judgement test, and a selection centre. Design and setting: A three-part longitudinal predictive validity study of selection into training for UK general practice. Method: In sample 1, participants were junior doctors applying for training in general practice (n = 6824). In sample 2, participants were GP registrars 1 year into training …

Four Week Lumbopelvic-Hip Complex Intervention Program And Its Effects On Tuck Jump Assessment In Active Youth, Gretchen D. Oliver, Terry Dewitt
Four Week Lumbopelvic-Hip Complex Intervention Program And Its Effects On Tuck Jump Assessment In Active Youth, Gretchen D. Oliver, Terry Dewitt
Articles
Injury in youth physical activity has become a major concern with the rising rate of participation. Lumbopelvic-hip complex (LPHC) stability, also known as core stability, has been found to contribute to proper force dissipation and ultimately more effective mechanics. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a LPHC neuromuscular strengthening program on at-risk youth using the Tuck Jump Assessment. Forty-five youth grades 6, 7, and 8 participated in the Tuck Jump Assessment. Then those participants who scores were indicative of 'at risk' were enrolled in a four-week LPHC intervention program. Those participants whose sores did …
Empowering Students With Assessment Data, Jane M. Souza, Karen D.C. Bobak
Empowering Students With Assessment Data, Jane M. Souza, Karen D.C. Bobak
Pharmacy Faculty/Staff Publications
Students’ perspective on assessment may be limited to summative grades for semester performance. However, providing access to data tracking their progress formatively could empower them to be more proactive in preparing for success. Examples of empowering students through access to data will be shared from two campuses. One campus will demonstrate how requiring students to reflect on longitudinal reports of their performance on learning outcomes can assist in targeting their studies. The second campus will exhibit how assessment data can be linked to peer mentoring. Participants will strategize how to engage students actively in the use of assessment data.
Complementary And Alternative Medicine: Attitudes And Use Among Health Educators In The United States, Ping Johnson, Jennifer Priestley, Kandice Porter, Jane Petrillo
Complementary And Alternative Medicine: Attitudes And Use Among Health Educators In The United States, Ping Johnson, Jennifer Priestley, Kandice Porter, Jane Petrillo
Jennifer L. Priestley
Background: Interest in and use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in the United States is increasing. However, CAM remains an area of nascency for researchers and western practitioners. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine U.S. health educators' attitudes toward CAM and their use of common CAM therapies. Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among members of a professional health educator listserv. Results: Health educators generally have positive attitudes toward CAM and about 90% have used at least one CAM therapy in the last 12 months. Differences in CAM attitudes and use were significant, with females …
A Survey Of Complementary And Alternative Medicine Knowledge Among Health Educators In The United States, Ping Johnson, Jennifer Priestley, Roy Johnson
A Survey Of Complementary And Alternative Medicine Knowledge Among Health Educators In The United States, Ping Johnson, Jennifer Priestley, Roy Johnson
Jennifer L. Priestley
Background: Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is popular among U.S. health care consumers, but no study has examined how much health educators know about CAM. Purpose: To examine the knowledge of basic CAM concepts and common CAM therapies among health educators in the U.S. Methods: An online survey was conducted among 1,299 health educators with valid e-mails on a professional listserv. The response rate was 39%. The 16-item CAM knowledge scale yielded a Cronbach's alpha of .71. Results: Participating health educators were most knowledgeable about chiropractic and massage therapy, familiar with the general definition of CAM, understood whether acupuncture is …

At its best, a university is a collection of individuals ‐‐ students and faculty ‐‐ focused on learning and discovering new knowledge. For this goal to be realized, a critical element is having faculty members deeply engaged with their disciplines. Scholarship, in the form of journal articles, book chapters, monographs and similar endeavors, creative activity which can take an even wider range of forms, and funded research which explores the boundaries of their disciplines all contribute to such engagement. Through such participation, faculty members stay at the growing edges of their fields, and in so doing, they enrich their intellectual …
