Metabolic Profile And Adipokine Levels In Overweight And Obese Dogs, Paula Nassar De Marchi, Luiz Henrique Araújo Machado, Luciane Holsback, Jessica Ragazzi Calesso, Rafael Fagnani, Ademir Zacarias Junior, Mauro Jose Lahm Cardoso

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Obesity in dogs is increasingly present in the veterinary practice. In humans, it is known that there is a significant correlation between obesity and the development of hypertension and insulin resistance (IR), a clinical picture called metabolic syndrome. In dogs, however, there are only anecdotes about the syndrome. The objectives of this study were to determine serum levels of adiponectin, leptin, triglycerides, cholesterol, insulin, glucose, homeostasis assessment of B cell function (HOMA-B), homeostasis assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and systolic blood pressure (SBP) in dogs with different body conditions (BC) and body fat (BF) without endocrine disease. For this purpose, …

Assessment Of Asymmetric Dimethyl Arginine, Cardiac Troponin I, Thyroxine, Cholesterol, And Triglyceride Levels In Obese Dogs And Dogs With Normal Body Condition, Hüseyi̇n Ci̇han, Merve Tural Jan 2019

Assessment Of Asymmetric Dimethyl Arginine, Cardiac Troponin I, Thyroxine, Cholesterol, And Triglyceride Levels In Obese Dogs And Dogs With Normal Body Condition, Hüseyi̇n Ci̇han, Merve Tural

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of this study was to assess serum asymmetric dimethyl arginine (ADMA), cardiac troponin I (cTnI), thyroxine (T4), cholesterol and triglyceride (TG) levels in dogs with normal body condition and obese dogs. A total of 40 dogs (n = 40) were included in the study and dogs were divided into two groups; 20 dogs with normal body condition and 20 obese dogs. The dogs were grouped according to the five-point body-condition scoring (BCS) system. Serum ADMA, cTnI, T4, cholesterol, and TG levels were measured in addition to routine biochemical parameters. Serum ADMA, cTnI, TG, and cholesterol levels were statistically …

Impact Of Basal Diet On Obesity Phenotype Of Recipient Mice Following Fecal Microbiome Transfer From Obese Or Lean Human Donors, Daphne Michelle Rodriguez Jimenez Aug 2018

Impact Of Basal Diet On Obesity Phenotype Of Recipient Mice Following Fecal Microbiome Transfer From Obese Or Lean Human Donors, Daphne Michelle Rodriguez Jimenez

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The composition of the gut microbiome can be affected by environmental factors, such as diet. The Western dietary pattern is associated with microbiome dysbiosis and adverse health outcomes, including obesity and metabolic disorders. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of gut microbiota from lean or obese human donors on metabolism and weight gain in recipient mice fed one of three basal diets: 1) the standard AIN93G diet, which promotes rodent health; 2) the total Western diet (TWD), which mimics the American dietary pattern and promotes inflammation-associated colorectal carcinogenesis; and 3) a 45% high fat diet-induced obesity …

How Useful Is Gsv As An Environmental Observation Tool? An Analysis Of The Evidence So Far., Katherine Nesse, Leah Airt Oct 2017

How Useful Is Gsv As An Environmental Observation Tool? An Analysis Of The Evidence So Far., Katherine Nesse, Leah Airt

SPU Works

Researchers in many disciplines have turned to Google Street View to replace pedestrian- or carbased in-person observation of streetscapes. It is most prevalent within the research literature on the relationship between neighborhood environments and public health but has been used as diverse as disaster recovery, ecology and wildlife habitat, and urban design. Evaluations of the tool have found that the results of GSV-based observation are similar to the results from in-person observation although the similarity depends on the type of characteristic being observed. Larger, permanent and discrete features showed more consistency between the two methods and smaller, transient and judgmental …

Overall Prevalence Of Feline Overweight/Obesity In Japan As Determined Froma Cross-Sectional Sample Pool Of Healthy Veterinary Clinic-Visiting Cats In Japan, Nobuko Mori, Eiji Iwasaki, Yuki Okada, Koh Kawasumi, Toshiro Arai Jan 2016

Overall Prevalence Of Feline Overweight/Obesity In Japan As Determined Froma Cross-Sectional Sample Pool Of Healthy Veterinary Clinic-Visiting Cats In Japan, Nobuko Mori, Eiji Iwasaki, Yuki Okada, Koh Kawasumi, Toshiro Arai

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Many veterinarians feel that feline obesity is increasing in prevalence within Japan, but are unsure as to what real rate of obesity prevalence exists currently. The objectives of this study are twofold. First, we sought to determine the ratio of overweight/obese cats, as determined via body condition score (BCS), based on a cross-sectional pool of healthy cats. Second, using a uniform method of biochemical measurement for cat plasma collected all over Japan, we sought to construct cross-sectional working reference ranges of plasma metabolites using age, BCS, and sex as classifying factors. Overall, the rate of overweight and obese cats (BCS …

Diagnosis And Management Of Horses With Equine Metabolic Syndrome (Ems), Kelly Ann Chameroy Dec 2010

Diagnosis And Management Of Horses With Equine Metabolic Syndrome (Ems), Kelly Ann Chameroy

Doctoral Dissertations

In horses, a painful and often debilitating disease known as laminitis can result in impaired function and, in severe cases, euthanasia. Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) is a syndrome in horses that results in development of laminitis and is characterized by the presence of general and/or regional adiposity (“cresty neck”), aberrations in blood lipid concentrations, insulin resistance (IR) and/ or hyperinsulinemia. Therapies have focused on improving the state of obesity and insulin resistance with the goal of diminishing the likelihood of laminitis development. A definitive cause for laminitis has not been established, but hyperinsulinemia and IR are likely candidates as experimental …

Regional Differences In Adipose Tissue Of The Sinclair Minipig, Suzanne Lauren Booker Aug 2010

Regional Differences In Adipose Tissue Of The Sinclair Minipig, Suzanne Lauren Booker

Masters Theses

Adipose tissue is an endocrine organ, and its homeostatic mechanisms in normal weight, overweight and obese subjects must be elucidated. We sought to determine the basal adipose tissue biology of visceral (VIF) and subcutaneous (SQF) fat depots in 8 month old Sinclair minipigs, an animal that has been shown to be physiologically similar to humans.

Metabolic analysis showed a decrease in LDL, white blood cells (WBC), and lymphocyte percentages as the minipigs aged from 6 to 8 months (p <0.0001 and = 0.0046 and 0.0165 respectively). There were no significant changes in triglycerides, HDL, VLDL, and neutrophil percentages. There was a trend in insulin increase (P=0.0722).

Microarray analysis was performed to determine transcriptome differences between VIF and SQF. When VIF was compared to SQF, expression of a …
