Utilization Of Regrowth For Forage In Seed Stands Of Meadow Fescue (Festuca Pratensis Huds.), Lars T. Havstad Jun 2024

Utilization Of Regrowth For Forage In Seed Stands Of Meadow Fescue (Festuca Pratensis Huds.), Lars T. Havstad

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Intensive utilization of autumn regrowth for forage production was compared to other autumn treatments in nine seed production fields of meadow fescue (Festuca pratensis) during 1993-96. Uncut plots without a N application in autumn always had the lowest number of reproductive tillers and the lowest subsequent year seed yields. Intensive utilization of regrowth, by application of 80 kg N ha-1 immediately after seed harvest and forage harvests in September or October, did not have any negative impact on the following yearsí seed yields. Delaying forage harvest from 10 September to 10 October increased forage yields, but lowered the …

Manitoba Green Gold- An Extension Project Linking High Quality Hay With High Profits, Dennis Joosse Jun 2024

Manitoba Green Gold- An Extension Project Linking High Quality Hay With High Profits, Dennis Joosse

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Improving the quality of harvested forage is seen as an important step in improving the productivity of Manitoba’s beef, dairy and cash hay operations. One of the most important determinants of forage quality is stage of maturity when harvested. Timely cutting is particularly important during first cut because it represents a major portion of the total harvest, and forage quality drops rapidly during this period.

Lamb Performance On Russian Wildrye And Russian Wildrye-Legume Mixtures, David W. Koch, Limei Yun Jun 2024

Lamb Performance On Russian Wildrye And Russian Wildrye-Legume Mixtures, David W. Koch, Limei Yun

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Alfalfa, sainfoin and cicer milkvetch provided relatively little increase in forage production, however, they improved forage palatability and quality, increasing total forage consumption. Over years 3 through 5 of the stand, lamb production per hectare was more than doubled with alfalfa and sainfoin, compared with Russian wildrye (RWR) alone. Cicer milkvetch was relatively slow to establish and did not contribute significantly to mixture quality until Year 5. Alfalfa was more competitive to RWR than sainfoin.

Species Composition And Forage Quality Of Birdsfoot Trefoil (Lotus Corniculatus L.) - Grass Mixtures, L J. Greub, D J. Undersander Jun 2024

Species Composition And Forage Quality Of Birdsfoot Trefoil (Lotus Corniculatus L.) - Grass Mixtures, L J. Greub, D J. Undersander

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

This study compares yield, species composition, and forage quality of binary mixtures of two birdsfoot trefoil cultivars (‘Witt’ and ‘Dawn’) and six cool-season forage grasses. Stands were established by no-till seeding into glyphosate killed pasture sod in May and in August. Heavy autumn dandelion (Taraxacum officinale Weber) competition reduced trefoil survival in August seedings. The proportion of trefoil in the herbage varied widely but in spring-seeded seeding year stands it was always highest with Kentucky bluegrass (maximum of 740 g kg-1, first harvest, 1994) and usually lowest (107 g kg-1 or less) with perennial ryegrass, reed canarygrass, or orchardgrass. …

Forage Quality Of 'Matua' Bromegrass (Bromus Wildenowii), L G. Brown, J K. King

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Research on forage quality of ‘Matua’ prairiegrass (Bromus wildenowii) is limited in Kentucky. Due to hot summers, mild winters and a 200-day long growing season in Kentucky, quality as well as management practices may differ from those reported in research from other climates. The objective of this study was to evaluate the forage quality of cool-season grasses including Matua, grazing bromegrass (Bromus stamineus), smooth bromegrass (Bromus inermis), tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) and orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata). The experiment was conducted in the field and greenhouse. Four harvests were obtained from each. Quality analyses …

Improvement Of Subtropical Native Grasslands With The Introduction Of Forage Species And Phosphorous Fertilizers, M N. Baby, S.B C. Lustosa, A Moraes, A.C V. Motta, R L. Stanger Jun 2024

Improvement Of Subtropical Native Grasslands With The Introduction Of Forage Species And Phosphorous Fertilizers, M N. Baby, S.B C. Lustosa, A Moraes, A.C V. Motta, R L. Stanger

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

The experiment took place in Guarapuava-Brazil, from May 1994 to January, 1996 to evaluate the improvement of a subtropical native grassland by the introduction of species and phosphate fertilization. It was observed that for the higher dose applied there occurred an increase over the production of dry matter and crude protein production and absorption of P and K in the plant. A response was not found to the 180 kg P2O5/ha application probably because of the high capacity of soil adsorption, the method of fertilizer application, non favorable climatic conditions and liming interference. The single superphosphate-SS application was superior to …

Triticale As Early Winter Forage For Meat Calves On Sandy Acidic Soils, M Bemhaja, D F. Risso

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

The use of triticale as a winter forage, improves animal performance. The objective of this study was to characterize a triticale crop during winter months, in relation to liveweight gain and animal production, under different grazing systems on sandy acidic soils. Three treatments were imposed to weaned calves of 110 kg liveweight average. Continuous grazing at a herbage allowance of 4% liveweight in dry matter (C4), rotational at an herbage allowance of 4% dry matter (R4) and rotational grazing at an herbage allowance of 2. 5% liveweight (R2. 5). Individual calf gain was 585 g/day for C4 and R4 and …

Potassium Accumulation In Perennial Cool-Season Grass Forage, J H. Cherney, D.J R. Cherney Jun 2024

Potassium Accumulation In Perennial Cool-Season Grass Forage, J H. Cherney, D.J R. Cherney

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Perennial grasses are well adapted to the northern U.S.A. and Canada, but the potassium (K) content of grass forage is a major concern in regard to dairy cattle nutrition. Our goal was to identify factors influencing potassium content of grasses, so that a grass management strategy for controlling potassium content could be formulated. Separate experiments were conducted with several perennial coolseason grass species and varieties. Nitrogen fertilization and harvest management also were evaluated. Aside from the obvious positive effect on K concentration caused by commercial K fertilizer or by animal manure application, K concentration was influenced by grass species, grass …

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

This study was undertaken to determine the forage potential of Texas bluegrass (Poa arachnifera Torr). Texas bluegrass is a perennial coolseason grass native to Kansas, Oklahoma, western Arkansas, and the central region of Texas, USA (Gould, 1975). Thirteen different accessions were established in 1988 at the Texas A&M University Centers at Dallas and Stephenville and tested for 2 years. Mean yields at Stephenville and Dallas were 3610 and 6022 kg ha-1. Two synthetic varieties (Syn-1 and Syn-2) were tested from 1990 to 1995 at four locations in Texas. Yields of Syn-1 was greater than Syn-2 whereas Syn- 2 provided …

Development Of Megathyrsus Maximus Genotypes For Intensification Of Cattle Rearing In Brazil, Liana Jank, M. F. Santos, Sanzio Carvalho Barrios, Cacilda Borges Do Valle, Rosangela Maria Simeão Feb 2024

Development Of Megathyrsus Maximus Genotypes For Intensification Of Cattle Rearing In Brazil, Liana Jank, M. F. Santos, Sanzio Carvalho Barrios, Cacilda Borges Do Valle, Rosangela Maria Simeão

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Megathyrsus maximus is a forage species used over 30 million hectares in Brazil and in the surrounding countries for intensification of the cattle production systems. Due to the large area and distinct biomes in which it is used, there is a need to continuously develop more productive and adapted cultivars to each biome and use. Three apomictic accessions were crossed with five sexual plants at Embrapa Beef Cattle in Campo Grande, MS, Brazil in 2014. More than 1100 hybrids were planted in a spaced-plant field and evaluated visually for regrowth after cuts and for disease and pest damage. In 2016, …

Rotational Stocking With Virtual Fences: Effects On Grassland Diet Digestibility, Livestock Performance And Stress Levels Of Heifers, N. A. Grinnell, D. Hamidi, M. Komainda, F. Reisch, J. Horn, I. Traulsen, R. Palme, J. Isselstein

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Virtual fencing is an innovative technology for simplified, less laborious dynamic grazing management and remote animal monitoring. The effect of this novel technology on animal welfare is still a matter of debate. Previous research suggests no differences in stress experience responses of cattle between the two fencing systems on continuously stocked pastures. This study investigated differences in diet organic matter digestibility, livestock performance and fecal cortisol metabolite concentrations of heifers on pastures in a rotational grazing system, fenced with a virtual fence (Nofence, Batnfjordsøra Norway) compared to heifers fenced with a traditional electric wire fence. The study was conducted in …

Integrated Crop And Pasture Based Livestock Production System Success On Reclaimed Surface Coal Mined Land In South Africa, W. F. Truter, E. N. Cele Feb 2024

Integrated Crop And Pasture Based Livestock Production System Success On Reclaimed Surface Coal Mined Land In South Africa, W. F. Truter, E. N. Cele

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Coal mining is the largest surface mining operation in South Africa’s grassland biome. Surface mining is leaving large tracts of land revegetated to pasture species as mining companies attempt to reclaim the agricultural potential of mined areas. Top soil management remains the key challenge to ensure agricultural productivity. During the reclamation process, newly placed soils are very often chemically, physically and microbiologically degraded, and high soil ameliorant inputs are required to catalyse agroecosystem function. These revegetated landscapes can offer good grazing capacity; however, to date there are no livestock grazing these areas, resulting in the subsequent deterioration of these new …

Grazing Management For Alfalfa Persistence And Productivity In Warm-Climate Regions, D. Basigalup Jan 2024

Grazing Management For Alfalfa Persistence And Productivity In Warm-Climate Regions, D. Basigalup

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Alfalfa is the most important cultivated forage crop in Argentina, where about 3 million hectares are grown. Even though the use of direct grazing is coming down during the last 15 years, it is still important for both beef and dairy production. Alfalfa grazing can play an important role in reducing operative costs and decreasing quality loss due to forage conservation (hay or silage). In this paper, the main concepts necessary to implement adequate and practical rotational grazing systems are briefly discussed. Particular attention is given to issues such as grazing frequency, grazing period, pasture use efficiency, and alfalfa quality …

Inhibiting Dhurrin Biosynthesis Effects On Stocker Cattle Daily Gains, S. M. Gruss, K. D. Johnson, R. P. Lemenager, M. R. Tuinstra Jan 2024

Inhibiting Dhurrin Biosynthesis Effects On Stocker Cattle Daily Gains, S. M. Gruss, K. D. Johnson, R. P. Lemenager, M. R. Tuinstra

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Climate change has made resilient crops more valuable in many agricultural production systems. Sorghum is an important resilient grain and forage crop due to its high drought tolerance and ability to thrive in low-N environments. All current commercial sorghum varieties produce the cyanogenic glucoside dhurrin. Cell maceration causes the conversion of dhurrin to hydrogen cyanide (HCN), which is toxic to animals. Toxicity symptoms range from labored breathing and convulsions to death within minutes. The dhurrin biosynthesis pathway was altered to inhibit dhurrin production by a mutation that inactivated CYP79A1, the first enzyme in the pathway. The dhurrin-free phenotype eliminates the …

Looking At Cell Wall Components With Our Customers In Mind, D. J. Heuschele, Z. Xu, J. F. S. Lamb, H. J. Jung, D. A. Samac Jan 2024

Looking At Cell Wall Components With Our Customers In Mind, D. J. Heuschele, Z. Xu, J. F. S. Lamb, H. J. Jung, D. A. Samac

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Fiber digestibility of alfalfa for animal nutrition is a complex system encapsulating animal, plant, and microbe biological traits. Understanding all components within the system is key to predicting forage quality. We investigated the relationship between alfalfa cell wall components and invitro neutral detergent fiber digestibility (IVNDFD) speed (16-hr) and potential (96-hr) of by cattle ruminant microbes. A composite alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) population from seven commercial cultivars underwent two cycles of bidirectional selection for plants with low or high stem 16-hr IVNDFD and low or high stem 96-hr IVNDFD. The resulting selected populations were then evaluated by near inferred spectrometry …

Conservation Reserve Program Hay Quality From Producer Submissions To A Commercial Laboratory In Central Nebraska, R. J. Kern-Lunbery Jan 2024

Conservation Reserve Program Hay Quality From Producer Submissions To A Commercial Laboratory In Central Nebraska, R. J. Kern-Lunbery

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

The Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) sets aside hectares to be permanent grassland and keeps those acres out of rotation for agricultural use. In drought conditions, these acres open to emergency haying and grazing. CRP hay is harvested at the end of the primary nesting season, mid to late summer, therefore this is a very mature product for stored forage. Many beef cow producers in the Midwest feed CRP hay in the last third of gestation until cattle can be turned out for spring grazing. Data was obtained from CRP hay samples to evaluate forage nutritive value and supplementation needs relative …

Domestication Of The Annual Legume Trigonella Balansae For Mixed Farming Systems In Southern Australia, M. G. Wilmot, H. C. Norman, J. K. Hendry, P. Young, Elizabeth L. Hulm, A. Toovey, R. J. Harrison Jan 2024

Domestication Of The Annual Legume Trigonella Balansae For Mixed Farming Systems In Southern Australia, M. G. Wilmot, H. C. Norman, J. K. Hendry, P. Young, Elizabeth L. Hulm, A. Toovey, R. J. Harrison

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

An accession of the annual legume Trigonella balansae Boiss. and Reuter. has been selected for commercial release in Australia. The annual legume has significant potential as a self-regenerating pasture within mixed farming systems. As part of a duty-of-care assessment, we tested the hypothesis that sheep grazing the trigonella cultivar will have similar liveweight, condition scores, health and wool production to sheep grazing two widely adopted annual legumes, subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum L. cv Dalkeith) and French serradella (Ornithopus sativus Brot. cv. Erica). Forage dry matter digestibility (DMD), crude protein (CP), fibre, mineral content and isoflavones were measured across …

The Influence Of High Density Grazing And Conventional, Rotational Grazing On Soil And Vegetation Parameters In The Semi-Arid And Mesic Grasslands Of South Africa, Jamie Paulse, C. Visser, P. J. Malan, G. N. Smit, F. H. De Witt Jan 2024

The Influence Of High Density Grazing And Conventional, Rotational Grazing On Soil And Vegetation Parameters In The Semi-Arid And Mesic Grasslands Of South Africa, Jamie Paulse, C. Visser, P. J. Malan, G. N. Smit, F. H. De Witt

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

In South Africa, multi-camp rotational grazing using ‘conservative stocking rates’ have been the conventional approach to livestock grazing management systems. However, as of late, the high-desnity approach (used interchangeably – depending on the situation – with regenerative grazing, mob grazing, short duration, high pressure grazing, rapid rotation, time controlled, ultra-high density, holistic grazing and holistic resource management) has been adopted by numerous farmers. This approach is considered to be an adaptable one, incorporating the ‘herd effect’ concept, whereby large numbers of animals occupy an area for short periods of time, and allowed an extended rest period. It claims to improve …

Evaluation Of Narrow-Row Forage Maize In Field-Scale Studies, W. J. Cox, J. H. Cherney, D. J. R. Cherney Aug 2023

Evaluation Of Narrow-Row Forage Maize In Field-Scale Studies, W. J. Cox, J. H. Cherney, D. J. R. Cherney

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Some dairy producers in the northeastern USA adopted narrow row (0.38 m) maize forage production in the mid-1990s because of its 5% dry matter (DM) yield advantage (Cox & Cherney, 1998). These dairy producers, however, continued to plant forage maize at high plant densities (125,000 plants/ha) under high N fertility (225 kg N/ha), despite research that indicated that forage maize had optimum DM yields and forage quality when planted at the recommended 100,000 plants/ha under 175 kg/ha of N fertility (Cox & Cherney, 2001). We evaluated forage maize at 0.38 and 0.76 m (conventional) row spacing under recommended vs. high …

A Simple Theoretical Model For Calculating Agricultural Value Of Grasslands, G. Nagy Aug 2023

A Simple Theoretical Model For Calculating Agricultural Value Of Grasslands, G. Nagy

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

In spite of the emerging new social demands for non-material grassland products and services (nature reservation, environmental protection, landscape and amenity), the productivity of grasslands is going to remain in the mainstream of overall grassland use in many regions and countries of the world. Strategic planning of future grassland use in a region needs reliable information on the agricultural value of grasslands. The purpose of our research programme was to find a model for calculating the agricultural value of grasslands, in order to assist the classification of grassland productivity for a given area.

Desmodium Velutinum: A High-Quality Shrub Legume For Acid Soils In The Tropics, R. Schultze-Kraft, M. Peters, N. Vivas, F. Parra, L. H. Franco

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Drought tolerant legume shrubs can enhance the sustainability of smallholder production systems in the tropics through the provision, year-round, of high-quality feed and through their positive effect on soil. Desmodium velutinum (Willd.) DC. is one of the few shrub species that have been identified as (1) well adapted to acid tropical soils and (2) of good nutritive value (Schultze-Kraft, 1996). It is a perennial native to SE Asia and tropical Africa growing up to 3 m high, the velutinous (velvety) surfaces of its 1-foliolate leaves being a characteristic feature. It grows well on soils ranging from pH 4.0 to alkaline, …

Reduce Tall Fescue Toxicosis In Festuca Arundinacea Forage Systems With Legumes, J. C. Waller, A. E. Fisher, H. A. Fribourg, C. J. Richards Jun 2023

Reduce Tall Fescue Toxicosis In Festuca Arundinacea Forage Systems With Legumes, J. C. Waller, A. E. Fisher, H. A. Fribourg, C. J. Richards

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Tall fescue (Lolium arundinaceum = Festuca arundinacea) is an important cool-season grass because of persistence and spring and autumn productivity. Most existing tall fescue pastures in Tennessee are Kentucky-31 (KY-31) and are infested with the endophytic fungus Neotyphodium coenophialum that causes tall fescue toxicosis. Symptoms in beef cattle include reduced rates of gain, poor conception rates, decreased dry matter intake, a long rough haircoat in summer, and very low serum prolactin. Earlier studies indicated that the performance of cattle grazing endophyte-free (EF) tall fescue is superior to that of cattle grazing endophyte-infected (EI) tall fescue (Fribourg et al …

Forage Quality Of Cool Season Pasture Species Under Two Rotational Grazing Height Regimes, H. D. Karsten, M. Carlassare Jun 2023

Forage Quality Of Cool Season Pasture Species Under Two Rotational Grazing Height Regimes, H. D. Karsten, M. Carlassare

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

To optimize animal and pasture performance in management intensive grazing systems, pasture production and quality often must be compromised. Rotationally-stocking pastures at slightly taller grazing heights can increase pasture productivity, but lower forage quality may limit animal performance. Our objective was to compare the forage quality of common cool season pasture species in the Northeastern U.S., under two rotational grazing regimes defined by slightly different grass heights.

Relative Yields And Nutritive Value Of Whole Crop Rice Harvested On Four Successive Dates For Forage In Korea, Jong-Geun Kim, Y. C. Lim, E. S. Chung, S. H. Yoon, S. Seo, M. J. Kim Jun 2023

Relative Yields And Nutritive Value Of Whole Crop Rice Harvested On Four Successive Dates For Forage In Korea, Jong-Geun Kim, Y. C. Lim, E. S. Chung, S. H. Yoon, S. Seo, M. J. Kim

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

About four million tons of forages are fed to ruminants in Korea, but half of them rely on rice straw as roughage and 0.6 million tons of forage was imported. The lack of forage results in increased imports of concentrate feeds and increased production cost. Now, Korea has about 1.1 million ha of rice fields, but as a consequence of world trade negotiation, Korea will open the rice market from next year. It is expected that due to aging farmers and lower rice price, about 0.2 million ha of paddy field will not be cultivated for grain rice. Therefore, we …

Accumulation Of Zearalenone In Herbage Of Winter Pasture Situated In West Poland, P. Goliński, M. Kostecki, Barbara Golińska, B. T. Golińska, P. K. Goliński Jun 2023

Accumulation Of Zearalenone In Herbage Of Winter Pasture Situated In West Poland, P. Goliński, M. Kostecki, Barbara Golińska, B. T. Golińska, P. K. Goliński

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

The importance of winter pastures in beef production in Europe has been growing steadily. In Poland, especially in its western part, there are already farms which utilise pasture swards during late autumn and winter. The major problem, however, is the quality of forage ingested by animals as it tends to deteriorate with the passage of the vegetation season with danger of accumulation of various mycotoxins (Laser et al., 2003) of which the most important is zearalenone (ZEA).

Factors Affecting Forage Quality Of Native Species In Iranian Rangelands, Hossein Arzani, J. Torkan, H. Kaboli, M. Zohdi Jun 2023

Factors Affecting Forage Quality Of Native Species In Iranian Rangelands, Hossein Arzani, J. Torkan, H. Kaboli, M. Zohdi

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Animal performance is closely correlated with the nutrient value of the forage available and this is affected by different factors (Arzani et al., 2001). Crude protein content (CP), digestible dry matter (DDM) and metabolisable energy (ME) were considered particularly appropriate for evaluation of range forage quality. This paper reports on factors affecting the forage quality of range species grown in Iran.

Determination And Comparison Of Forage Quality Of Five Species In Different Phenological Stages In Alborz Rangelands (Iran), A. Ahmadi, Hossein Arzani, A. A. Jaafari

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

In order to evaluate grazing capacity and integrated management of rangelands and grasslands , it is necessary to be aware of the quality of range plants. Phenological (growth) stage has the greatest effect on forage quality with most of the qualitative indices decreasing with the progress of the phenological stage (Holecheck et al., 2001). This research studied the changes in forage quality for species in the Alborz rangelands.
