Optimization And Resistance Mitigation Of Dicamba And Glufosinate In Xtendflex® Crops, Grant Lawson Priess Dec 2021

Optimization And Resistance Mitigation Of Dicamba And Glufosinate In Xtendflex® Crops, Grant Lawson Priess

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The commercial launch of XtendFlex® crops enabled the use of dicamba, glufosinate, and glyphosate in-season. Utilizing herbicides that target different sites of action within troublesome weeds has been a tactic proposed to mitigate the likelihood of target-site resistance evolving; however, if interactions of the herbicides are detrimental to control of weedy species the likelihood of metabolic resistance increases. The objective of this research was to: 1) optimize efficacy and economic benefits of dicamba, glufosinate, and glyphosate; 2) characterize any interactions that were observed; 3) understand the mechanisms responsible for the reductions in weed control; 4) attempt to overcome interactions that …

Crop Response To Low-Dose Dicamba, Mason Castner Jan 2021

Crop Response To Low-Dose Dicamba, Mason Castner

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The introduction of dicamba-resistant (DR) soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] and cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) followed by a label allowing over-the-top applications of dicamba in the 2017 provided growers an additional option for broadleaf weed control. Because non-DR soybean is sensitive to low concentrations of dicamba, postemergence dicamba applications present growers choosing to plant non-DR soybean with concerns of damage from off-target movement through physical drift and volatilization of the herbicide as well as tank-contamination from prior dicamba application. Consequences of low-dose dicamba exposure on sensitive vegetative and reproductive soybean have been well researched, but little is known regarding the …

Mitigating The Risk For Glufosinate Resistance, Christopher John Meyer Dec 2018

Mitigating The Risk For Glufosinate Resistance, Christopher John Meyer

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

While glufosinate-resistant weeds have not yet been identified in U.S. row crops, rapid evolution of glyphosate-resistance, and resulting cost to U.S. farmers, demonstrates the need to responsibly steward the limited number of herbicides available in agricultural systems. Field and laboratory experiments were conducted to: 1) Identify herbicide interactions that can occur in Enlist™ and Roundup Ready® Xtend® systems; 2) Identify herbicide interactions that occur when glufosinate is mixed with fomesafen, clethodim, and glyphosate; 3) Determine the optimum rate structure and application timings when multiple POST applications of glufosinate are applied to LibertyLink soybean; 4) Use 14C techniques to determine why …

Resistance Screening And Control Options For Glyphosate-Resistant Palmer Amaranth (Amaranthus Palmeri) In Cotton (Gossypium Hirsutum), Ryan Christopher Doherty Dec 2012

Resistance Screening And Control Options For Glyphosate-Resistant Palmer Amaranth (Amaranthus Palmeri) In Cotton (Gossypium Hirsutum), Ryan Christopher Doherty

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In the mid-2000's, glyphosate-resistant Palmer amaranth biotypes began to emerge in many southern states. In 2006, glyphosate-resistant Palmer amaranth was identified in a field in Mississippi County, Arkansas. A greenhouse experiment was conducted in 2008 to screen Palmer amaranth accessions, collected in this survey, for glyphosate resistance. Inflorescence were collected from a total of 276 plants from fields were glyphosate failure occurred, representing 74 accessions in 14 counties, including Clay, Craighead, Crittenden, Greene, Jackson, Jefferson, Lawrence, Lee, Mississippi, Phillips, Poinsett, Randolph, St. Francis, and White Counties. Eight of the 74 accessions did not produce viable seed. In the greenhouse, 32 …

Alternative Herbicide Control Options For Glyphosate-Resistant Palmer Amaranth (Amaranthus Palmeri), George Macmillan Botha Dec 2012

Alternative Herbicide Control Options For Glyphosate-Resistant Palmer Amaranth (Amaranthus Palmeri), George Macmillan Botha

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The occurrence of glyphosate-resistant (GR) Palmer amaranth has prompted a shift in weed management strategies worldwide. Studies were conducted with the aim to (1) establish and compare the degree of tolerance of GR Palmer amaranth populations; (2) assess the efficacy of glufosinate, tembotrione, 2,4-D or dicamba, applied alone or tank-mixed, on Palmer amaranth with higher tolerance to glufosinate in the greenhouse and corn field, and (3) establish the mechanism involved in the tolerance of Palmer amaranth to glufosinate. Tembotrione, 2,4-D, dicamba, and glufosinate applied at 1x controlled 80 to 100%, 98 to 100%, 84 to 100%, and 94 to 100% …
