In Southern Italy, the lack of rain during the summer period is one of the main factors limiting fodder crop production. Another very important parameter, linked to drought, is N fertilisation. In these conditions, it is necessary to find mixtures of legumes and grasses able to ensure good production and quality in the driest months, and to rationalise N fertilisation through control of the nutritional status of the crops at the beginning of spring.
