Persistency In Lolium X Festuca Hybrid Derivatives And Its Relationships With Flowering Traits, M Ghesquiere, C Mousset Mar 2024

Persistency In Lolium X Festuca Hybrid Derivatives And Its Relationships With Flowering Traits, M Ghesquiere, C Mousset

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Using amphiploid and backcrossed derivatives of Italian ryegrass x tall fescue hybrids, the paper emphasizes the interest of introgression vs amphiploidization in breeding for specific traits such as persistency or seed production from tall fescue or ryegrass resp. Persistency in amphiploid and Lolium-introgressed progenies were assessed in nursery together with variation of flowering traits. Persistency was found lower, on average, in introgressed progenies than in hybrid progenies but with enlarged variability within progeny suggesting possible advantageous rearrangements of fescue chromosomes. Although significantly associated, persistency in both populations was only very little affected by the variations in flowering traits such …

Field Evaluation Of Crown Rust In Annual Ryegrass Populations, G M. Prine Mar 2024

Field Evaluation Of Crown Rust In Annual Ryegrass Populations, G M. Prine

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Crown rust (Puccinia coronata [Pers.] Cda.) is the most prevalent disease found on annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum L.) of the southeastern USA. Determination of crown rust resistance is difficult because of the erratic nature of infections at most locations. As crown rust is present at Gainesville, FL each year, a rust nursery was designed to evaluate rust resistance and susceptibility of annual ryegrass. Evaluation consists of periodic rust ratings of the seed crop and regrowth of part of each plot after cutting. Nursery results indicate the buildup of rust, including at the date of 90% heading (start of …

Selection Of Interspecific Hybrids Of Brachiaria-A Tropical Forage Grass, C B. Do Valle Mar 2024

Selection Of Interspecific Hybrids Of Brachiaria-A Tropical Forage Grass, C B. Do Valle

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

The aim of the breeding program at the National Beef Cattle Research Center (CNPGC) of the Brazilian Corporation for Agricultural Research (EMBRAPA), is to produce vigorous apomictic hybrids with wide edaphic adaptation, good production and nutritive value combined with spittlebug (Homoptera:Cercopidea) resistance. Fiftysix superior hybrids were selected based on visual estimates of vigor, leafiness, tolerance to drought and natural spittlebug infestation in the field. These were characterized for mode of reproduction, spittlebug reaction under controlled conditions and for morphological diversity using nine selected traits. Multivariate analysis classified the population into seven groups where the hybrids were clearly intermediate in plant …

Mitochondrial Genome Polymorphism In Lolium Perenne, Y Shimamoto, Y Tominaga, M Sato, T Mikami

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

The restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) were investigated to elucidate the genetic relatedness among the 128 cultivars including diploid and tetraploid. Many patterns of RFLPs were observed and allowed assigning of the cultivars into the main eight haplotypes of mitochondrial genome relatedness. The American cultivars were classified into haplotype I and VIII which were remote at the mitochondrial genome from each other, the European ones were distributed to all haplotypes and the tetraploid ones were mostly assigned into the haplotype V. The assessment of mtDNA RFLPs may be a …

Inbreeding Of Some Populations In The Genus Agrostis L., Zorica Tomic, Gordana Surlan Momirovic, Dusica Delic, S Ostojic

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

This work presents some properties on produced inbred lines of the 5 best populations of 4 species of Agrostis for breeding purposes. The cultivars of forage grasses should meet a given aim for selection, which is the increasing dry matter and quality. The populations used in this research were the best ones for morphological and productive properties from a previous study. By the process of selfing there have been produced S1 offsprings which appeared to be quite superior in relation to open pollinated offspring from the mother plants. The obtained results were processed by multiple range regression analyses. According to …

The Effect Of Abscisic Acid On The Freezing Tolerance In Lolium Temulentum L., K Tase, H Fujii Mar 2024

The Effect Of Abscisic Acid On The Freezing Tolerance In Lolium Temulentum L., K Tase, H Fujii

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

This study was conducted to clarify the effect of abscisic acid (ABA) on the development of freezing tolerance in Lolium temulentum L. We compared the changes of freezing tolerance and endogenous ABA content by the ABA treatment with those by the hardening treatment. Exogenous ABA applications (7.5 x 10-5 M) increased freezing tolerance, but did not completely substitute for the hardening process. This treatment resulted in great increase in endogenous ABA content, as compared with the control or the hardening treatment. Since the relationship between endogenous ABA content and freezing tolerance was not parallel, it is considered that freezing tolerance …

Introduction Of Vegetative And Reproductive Characters Into Trifolium Repens By Interspecific Hybridisation, A H. Marshall, T P.T Michaelson-Yeates, M Meredith, D H. Hides

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Interspecific hybridization between white clover (Trifolium repens L.) and ball clover (T.nigrescens) and Caucasian clover (T.ambiguum) is a means of improving the reproductive growth and persistency of T.repens. F1 hybrids between T.repens and T.nigrescens were produced without ovule culture and confirmed as true hybrids by chromosome counts, isoenzyme analysis and leaf markers. Their growth habit was generally intermediate between the two parents. After backcrossing to T.repens the BC1 and BC2 hybrids had more of the characteristics associated with T.repens though they retained some of the greater reproductive growth of …

Colchicine-Doubling Of Germinating Seedlings Of Interspecific Wildrye Hybrids, T A. Jones, D C. Nielson, H Jaussi

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Colchicine has usually been applied to sterile clones of interspecific grass hybrids to restore fertility. However, when hybrids are partially fertile, colchicine can be applied to germinating seedlings. Four populations of Basin wildrye (Leymus cinereus) X beardless wildrye (L. triticoides) were treated with a 0.2% colchicine solution to double chromosome number from 4x=28 to 8x=56. Doubling percentage was 28, 33, 42, and 44% of all root-tips examined for the four populations. When plants without doubled sectors were discarded, doubling percentage increased to 56, 68, 78, and 78%. Plants with doubled sectors have been placed in crossing blocks …

Lit Jr., Cristian Lucañas, Joanne Langres, Lolita Dolores, Ruby Ana Laude, Merdelyn Caasi-Lit

The Philippine Agricultural Scientist

Samples of cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) plants infected with witches’ broom disease were gathered from 13 provinces in the Philippines. Mealybugs were observed to occur in nine out of the 13 cumulative samples. The most predominant among several mealybug species observed was identified as Pseudococcus jackbeardsleyi Gimpel and Miller. P. jackbeardsleyi is not yet known to transmit phytoplasma, especially the one causing cassava witches’ broom (CWB). However, its occurrence in almost 70% of the CWB-infected samples provides circumstantial evidence that it may be related to the spread of the pathogen. This formal report of identification is in support of the …

Application Of The Analytic Hierarchy Process And Geographic Information System In Selecting Sites For A Seafood Market Study, Shielameh Peralta-Milan, Osamu Baba, Severino Iii Salmo

The Philippine Agricultural Scientist

Study site selection is essential for the success of many fisheries-related programs. A thorough site selection could provide transparency in the decision-making process and optimize resources. In this research, the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) approach was used to select sites for a market study of reef-associated seafood in Alaminos City, Northwestern Philippines. Out of the 10 coastal barangays, four (Lucap, Sabangan, Telbang, and Victoria) were initially chosen, and the difference between these sites and the priority sites generated from AHP was examined. Five decision criteria and 10 alternatives (coastal barangays) were analyzed to calculate priority weights using pairwise comparisons. The …

Feeding Behavior Of Sweet Potato Weevil, Cylas Formicarius (Fabricius) (Coleoptera: Brentidae) On Three Sweet Potato, Ipomoea Batatas L. Cultivars Grown In Tarlac, Philippines, Jerah Mystica Novenario, Flor Ceballo-Alcantara Mar 2024

Feeding Behavior Of Sweet Potato Weevil, Cylas Formicarius (Fabricius) (Coleoptera: Brentidae) On Three Sweet Potato, Ipomoea Batatas L. Cultivars Grown In Tarlac, Philippines, Jerah Mystica Novenario, Flor Ceballo-Alcantara

The Philippine Agricultural Scientist

Sweet potato is grown in tropical countries for its edible tubers, which have become an essential food source. It is usually propagated through vine-cutting, which can be obtained from harvested plants or nurseries intended for cutting production only. The recurrent use of vines may cause increased weevil infestation. The crop is known to be infested with insect pests. More importantly, the sweet potato weevil, Cylas formicarius, targets the tubers, thus, causing the economic losses. Sweet potato farmers in Tarlac claim that only one sweet potato cultivar is being attacked by C. formicarius, however, it was found in this experiment that …

Pollinator Communities And Their Ecosystem Services At Conservation Grasslands And Adjacent Croplands, Araceli Gomez Villegas Mar 2024

Pollinator Communities And Their Ecosystem Services At Conservation Grasslands And Adjacent Croplands, Araceli Gomez Villegas

Department of Entomology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Pollinators are intrinsically linked to the success of unmanaged and managed ecosystems by providing pollination services that aid in the reproduction of wildflowers and many crops. Land use change, habitat loss, fragmentation, and related landscape-level phenomena (for example, increased pesticide exposure) threaten pollinators and have been associated with population declines. In the Midwestern region of the United States, land conversion of native prairies and grasslands to row-crop agriculture has been one of the largest contributors to pollinator habitat loss. Conservation programs, such as the Conservation Reserve Program, have worked towards removing environmentally sensitive lands from agriculture production and enrolling them …

Evaluation Of Ndot’S Sediment Barrier Practices Using Performance Data, Michael A. Perez, Wesley N. Donald, J. Blake Whitman, Brian G. Roche

Nebraska Department of Transportation: Research Reports

To protect waterways adjacent to construction projects with disturbed land, a 50 ft (15 m) vegetated buffer or equivalent sediment controls are required. However, there is little guidance on the effectiveness of vegetated buffers in removing sediment or how sediment barriers can aid shorter buffers or replace buffers. A modeling methodology was developed and used to determine the performance of 11,664 50 ft (15 m) vegetated buffer configurations with Nebraska conditions; sediment capture averaged 92.6% and ranged from 18.5% to 99.5%. To determine the performance of Nebraska Department of Transportation standard and modified sediment barrier installations, a large-scale testing methodology …

Plants Reduced Nitrous Oxide Emissions From A Northern Great Plains Saline/Sodic Soil, Sharon A. Clay, Thandiwe Nleya, David E. Clay, Deepak Joshi, Dwarika Bhattarai, Shin-Yi Marzano, Bhanu Prakash Petla

Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications

The slowly establishing salt-tolerant perennial grasses reduced nitrous oxide (N2 O- N) emissions from saline/sodic soil compared to barren areas. Other salt-tolerant species may accelerate vegetative establishment and reduce N 2 O-N emissions. In a greenhouse study, barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), Florida broadleaf mustard (Brassica juncea L.), and Kernza intermediate wheatgrass [Thinopyrum intermedium (Host) Barkworth & D. R. Dewey] were grown for 63 days to compare shoot biomass and chemical composition, N 2 O-N emissions, and the soil microbiome between saline/sodic and productive (non-salt impacted) soils. Emissions were measured six times daily from 1 to 22 and 42 to 63 …

Two New Species Of Bumblebee Scarabs (Coleoptera: Glaphyridae: Lichnanthe Burmeister) From The Central United States: A New Discovery In Wyoming Resolves A Century-Old Puzzle From The Nebraska Sand Hills, Matthew J. Paulsen

Insecta Mundi

The genus Lichnanthe Burmeister (Coleoptera: Scarabaeoidea: Glaphyridae) has comprised eight Nearctic species and contains the only New World members of their family. Here, two new species of arenicolous bumblebee scarabs are described from the central United States. The recent discovery of an undescribed Wyoming species led to the reevaluation of a dubious 134-year-old Nebraska Lichnanthe specimen, indicating that it also was an undescribed species. These two species, Lichnanthe brusti new species from central Wyoming and L. bruneri new species from central Nebraska are immediately distinguishable from all existing species of the genus by their square mandibles.

Automated Tree Mortality Detection Using Ubiquitously Available Public Data, Michael T. Huggins Mar 2024

Automated Tree Mortality Detection Using Ubiquitously Available Public Data, Michael T. Huggins

Master's Theses

Understanding the dynamic interplay between fire severity, topography, and tree mortality, is crucial for predicting future forest dynamics and enhancing resilience against climate change-induced wildfire regimes. This thesis develops a multi-sensor approach for automated estimation of tree mortality, then applies it to examine trends in tree mortality over a six-year period across a fire affected study site in the Trinity River basin in Northern California. The Random Forest model uses publicly available USGS 3D Elevation Program Lidar (3DEP) and NAIP imagery as inputs and is likely to be easily adaptable to other landscapes. The model had a Receiver Operating Characteristic …

Prioritizing Indigenous Participation And Compensation In Research, Amanda Sabin Feb 2024

Prioritizing Indigenous Participation And Compensation In Research, Amanda Sabin

Journal of Critical Global Issues

Throughout history, the dynamic between colonial entities and indigenous groups has been characterized by exploitation and power imbalance. Indigenous knowledge has the potential to positively impact the world, through medicinal breakthroughs, radical approaches to sustainability, cultural heritage, systems of learning and adaptation, and more. Particularly in the context of research, fields like anthropology, botany and pharmacology serve to benefit from indigenous knowledge, but these interactions cannot continue to be based on extraction at the cost of indigenous communities. This work will discuss the future of relationships between researchers and indigenous communities; how this power dynamic must be transformed into an …

Germplasm Enhancement Of Annual Forage Legumes Suitable For Use In Cold Highland Environments, H K. Firincioglu, N Karagullu, S Unal, A M. Abd-El Moneim Feb 2024

Germplasm Enhancement Of Annual Forage Legumes Suitable For Use In Cold Highland Environments, H K. Firincioglu, N Karagullu, S Unal, A M. Abd-El Moneim

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

The Central Highlands (CH) of Turkey are characterized by cold winters and dry summers. Under these extreme air temperatures, forage crops are still underexploited as a part of crop rotations. Half of the total vetch hectarage in Turkey is in the CH, and farmers still use the local cultivars that have good adaptability but low yield potential. Therefore, with the aim of identifying and improving the annual forage legume species for the cold and dry environment of the CH, research work was carried out during the 1993/94 and 1994/ 95 crop seasons. Initial results showed that Hungarian vetch (Vicia …

Use Of The Grazing Animal In Forage Breeding, J H. Bouton, C S. Hoveland, R N. Gates Feb 2024

Use Of The Grazing Animal In Forage Breeding, J H. Bouton, C S. Hoveland, R N. Gates

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

The objective of these studies was to determine, in the context of a forage breeding program, the effect of cattle grazing on survival of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), red clover (Trifolium pratense L.), and tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.). Different cultivars of each species were compared in grazed and ungrazed areas. Results consistently demonstrated that grazing reduced plant stands when compared to ungrazed conditions for each species tested. In alfalfa, however, cultivars developed for grazing tolerance showed much better grazing survival. Infection with the fungal endophyte, Acremonium coenophialum Morgan-Jones & Gams, likewise substantially increased grazing survival in …

Study Of Genotype X Environment Interaction In Alfalfa Forage Yield, S N. Acharya, G C. Kozub, H Najda, A Aasen Feb 2024

Study Of Genotype X Environment Interaction In Alfalfa Forage Yield, S N. Acharya, G C. Kozub, H Najda, A Aasen

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

The response of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) forage yield to eight Alberta test sites was studied for the 1990 and 1991 production years. Cluster analysis was used to group locations and cultivars. Analyses of variances indicated genotype x environment (location) interaction for the first cut yield, the total yield and the difference between first and second cut yields. The Brooks, Bow Island (irrigation), Bow Island (dryland) and Provost locations always clustered together indicating that three of these four test sites may be eliminated without sacrificing reliability.

Selection For Self-Fertility And Self-Fertility In Alfalfa As A Tool For Breeding Strategy Assessment, D Rosellini, F Veronesi, F Lorenzetti Feb 2024

Selection For Self-Fertility And Self-Fertility In Alfalfa As A Tool For Breeding Strategy Assessment, D Rosellini, F Veronesi, F Lorenzetti

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Cultivar development in alfalfa relies on heterosis, that has been mainly exploited by intercrossing selected clones from diverse gemplasm sources; an alternative way was proposed, based on developing double cross cultivars obtained by crossing clones selected for self-sterility, propagated by somatic seed. A different breeding strategy was recently emphasized based on population improvement through inbreeding and recurrent selection; in this case, self-sterility would be selected against. If self-sterility is determined by genetic load, the second strategy should be preferred, and selecting for self-fertility may bring about positive correlated responses for forage yield. Divergent selection for self-fertility was applied in a …

Morphological And Rapd Variations And Regenerants Derived From Cell Suspension Culture Of Pangolagrass, C S. Chen, S M. Wang, Y K. Cheng

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Pangolagrass cv. A254, a sterile strain, is one of Taiwan's major forage sources but recently has faced serious disease problems. Tissue culture was expected to generate variations in the breeding program of pangolagrass. The purpose of this study is to examine the somaclonal variation of regenerated plants by means of phenotypic characters survey and RAPD analysis. After long-term suspension culture and EMS mutagenesis, many regenerated plants with morphological variations have been found. Among the regenerants, 10 clones with obviously different characteristics were selected for further studies. Nine of them showed significant differences in morphological trains as compared to A254. By …

Phylogenetics Of Apomictic Common Dallisgrass (Paspalum Dilatatum), B L. Burson, M A. Hussey

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Common dallisgrass, Paspalum dilatatum Poir., an important warm season forage grass, is an obligate apomict with 50 chromosomes which associate as 20 bivalents and 10 univalents during meiosis. Because efforts to improve the grass have not been successful, a phylogenetic investigation was initiated to identify the progenitors of common dallisgrass in an effort to circumvent the apomictic barrier to improvement. The genomic composition has been determined for four dallisgrass biotypes: yellow-anthered (2n=4x=40) IIJJ; common (2n=5x=50) IIJJX; Uruguayan (2n=6x=60) IIJJXX; and Uruguaiana (2n=6x=60) IIJJXX. While the source of the X genome is unknown, the genes controlling apomixis are on at least …

Increased Longevity Of Red Clover Through Selection For Persistence And Disease Resistance, R R. Smith Feb 2024

Increased Longevity Of Red Clover Through Selection For Persistence And Disease Resistance, R R. Smith

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Red clover (Trifolium pratense L.), an excellent perennial forage legume, has been considered for many years to be a short-lived, two to three years, forage. Selection for resistance to foliar and root rot diseases and for longevity of stand over the past four decades has improved the persistence of the currently available cultivars. The present studies were conducted to evaluate the progress from selection for longevity and disease resistance. Selection for stand longevity and improved disease resistance has reliably extended the production of red clover into the third and fourth year. Selection for healthy plants in 3- or …

Selection For Herbage Yield And Flowering In Ladino White Clover, J A. Garcia Feb 2024

Selection For Herbage Yield And Flowering In Ladino White Clover, J A. Garcia

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

A geno-phenotypic recurrent selection program is being carried out on ladino white clover (Trifolium repens L.) aiming to combine good DM and seed yields. Selection criteria includes plant density, vigor, winter growth, flowering and diseases resistance. The performance of selections in terms of DM yields and seed production was evaluated in separate trials. Two cycles of selection increased flowering by 36% and seed yield by 59%. Preliminary data on herbage yields shows a very good performance of the selected material and suggests the feasibility of combining high DM and seed yields.
