Trial 90M055
Associated work: 90NO112, 105,104.111, 90MO53, 54,56
Location: Dandaragan
This project characterizes the dynamics of nitrogen supply to a wheat crop at each of the sites on which various methods of making fertilizer recommendation were tested. It supposedly provides the "optimum" nitrogen fertilizer regime as well as detailed information on nitrogen supply and demand so that results can be made transferable to other situations.

Trial 90EC29
Effect of depth and degree of soil disturbance on root and shoot growth of wheat on wind erosion prone sandy soil.
Location: East Chapman Research Station.
The long-term fertility and stability of the yellow, grey and white sands which make up 60% of the northern wheatbelt soils can only be safeguarded through strict adherence to conservation cropping practices: notably, direct drilling of both cereal and lupin crops. Work by R. Jarvis has shown a 10 - 15% yield advantage due to cultivation of sandplain soils, and data suggest that it is cultivation depth (degree of soil loosening) rather …

Does Chemical Leaf Burn Of Double Crop Soybeans Reduce Yield?, Larry J. Grabau, Todd W. Pfeiffer, S. Nevins
Does Chemical Leaf Burn Of Double Crop Soybeans Reduce Yield?, Larry J. Grabau, Todd W. Pfeiffer, S. Nevins
Agronomy Notes
Most farmers who have applied acifluorfen (sold as Blazer or Tackle) for postemergence control of broadleaf weeds in soybean fields are aware that leaf crinkling, bronzing, and necrosis can result. Despite this, studies in Kentucky, Illinois, Arkansas, and South Carolina have shown that full season soybeans have plenty of time to recover from leaf burn caused by this herbicide, and no yield losses have been found. However, double crop soybeans are usually planted much later than the full season crop. This delay in planting may reduce the time for plants to complete vegetative growth before beginning the seed production process. …

Trial 90WH75
A. Ear:stem ratios in parental genotypes.
Earlier studies have established the importance of ear:stem ratio in determining the harvest index and potential yield of wheat cultivars (Siddique et al. 1989; Siddique and Whan, 1990). Much of the earlier work was concentrated mainly on recommended high yielding cultivars and some old cultivars. It is important to evaluate a wide range of parental materials for ear:stem ratios, before embarking on a breeding programme on ear:stem ratios. The main aim of this study was to assess ear:stem ratios in a wide range of parental genotypes.

The National Subterranean Clover Improvement Programme (NSCIP) aims to develop, by breeding and selection, better adapted and more productive low—oestrogen cultivars of subterranean clover for a range of environments in southern Australia. The programme is a collaborative one with the University of Western Australia and consists of two phases: (i) early generation selection, which involves selecting varieties satisfying primary selection criteria; and (ii) field evaluation of advanced lines, which is conducted by the Departments of Agriculture in each State and co—ordinated by the Plant Breeder.
The first phase is conducted at the University Field Station (UFS) and is continued until …
