Laminin Potentiates Differentiation Of Pcc4uva Embryonal Carcinoma Into Neurons, T. M. Sweeney, Roy C. Ogle, C. D. Little Sep 1990

Laminin Potentiates Differentiation Of Pcc4uva Embryonal Carcinoma Into Neurons, T. M. Sweeney, Roy C. Ogle, C. D. Little

School of Medical Diagnostics & Translational Sciences Faculty Publications

The embryonal carcinoma PCC4uva differentiates into neurons in response to treatment with retinoic acid and dbcAMP. We used this in vitro model system to study the effects of laminin on early neural differentiation. Laminin substrata markedly potentiate neural differentiation of retinoic acid and dbcAMP-treated cultures. Only laminin induced more rapid neural cell body clustering, neurite growth and neurite fasciculation as compared to type IV collagen, type I collagen, and fibronectin substrata. Exogenous laminin substrata promoted greater cell attachment, cellular spreading and growth to confluence than type IV collagen, type I collagen, fibronectin and glass substrata. Laminin-induced effects were inhibited by …

Molecular Mechanisms Of Physalia Physalis Venom Modulation Of Cardiac And Vascular Functions, Eva Luo Aug 1990

Molecular Mechanisms Of Physalia Physalis Venom Modulation Of Cardiac And Vascular Functions, Eva Luo

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Portuguese man-of-war (Physalia physalis)venom has profound effects on the cardiovascular system of man and animals. The venom produces vascular relaxation in norepinephrine precontracted, intact rabbit femoral arterial rings by stimulating vasodilatory prostaglandin synthesis in the endothelium. This action does not depend on endotheliumderived relaxing factor (EDRF). P. physalis venom produces a vascular constriction on KC1 depolarized, intact rings. This is completely inhibited by dibenzyline and yohimbine. Increased membrane permeability to calcium may be involved in direct vascular smooth muscle stimulation. The venom has a positive inotropic effect on rat atrial preparations, which is intensified by increased extracellular calcium concentration. …

Effect Of Glucose Administration On Hamster Liver S9-Mediated Mutagenesis, Metabolism And Dna-Binding Of Benzo[A]Pyrene And Aflatoxin B1, Daniel C. Rubano Jun 1990

Effect Of Glucose Administration On Hamster Liver S9-Mediated Mutagenesis, Metabolism And Dna-Binding Of Benzo[A]Pyrene And Aflatoxin B1, Daniel C. Rubano

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Hamster liver S9 prepared from control animals and animals given 30% glucose in drinking water 48 h before time of sacrifice was used in studies of benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) and aflatoxin (AFB1)-induced mutagenesis, metabolism of BaP and AFB1, and metabolite binding to calf thymus DNA. BaP-induced mutagenesis in Salmonella typhimurium TA100 was reduced 38.5% while AFB1-induced mutagenesis was increased 36% by S9 from glucose-treated hamsters. The reduction of [3H]BaP metabolite binding to calf thymus DNA in incubations with S9 from glucose-treated hamsters correlated with a decrease in unknown BaP metabolite-deoxyribonucleoside adducts isolated by …

Characterization Of Hsd::Mudx128 Operon Fusion Mutant Of Escherichia Coli K-12, Marjorie Ann T. Reyno Jun 1990

Characterization Of Hsd::Mudx128 Operon Fusion Mutant Of Escherichia Coli K-12, Marjorie Ann T. Reyno

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The study of the regulation of gene expression in complex genes can be facilitated by the use of operon fusions which place a well characterized lacZ gene under the control of a promoter of interest. An hsd::MudX128 operon fusion mutant of E. coli K-12 isolated by Prakash (1986) was observed to have a high β-galactosidase activity (1000 units), ten to twenty times higher than other hsd::MudX mutants. This β-galactosidase activity was suppressed to a very low level (25 units) by the introduction of an F’ plasmid, F'101, which carries the 98 min to 2 min region of the …

Determinants Of 2000 Meter Rowing Ergometer Performance, Jeff C. Young May 1990

Determinants Of 2000 Meter Rowing Ergometer Performance, Jeff C. Young

Dissertations and Theses

Lean body weight and aerobic and anaerobic factors have long been recognized as important determinants of performance in the 2000 meter (M) race distance for rowing. Current research with noninvasive techniques has important implications for training and performance but is inconclusive. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between a 2000 M rowing ergometer performance test (PT) and lean body weight (LBW), velocity at heart rate deflection (Vd), and anaerobic capacity (AC) in experienced rowers. Vd was used as an estimate of aerobic function. Thirteen trained male rowers (mean age 38.5 ± 8 years) were studied. Hydrostatic …

Morphological And Physiological Examination Of A Demyelinating And Remyelinating Lesion, Paul Anson Felts Apr 1990

Morphological And Physiological Examination Of A Demyelinating And Remyelinating Lesion, Paul Anson Felts

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

Multiple sclerosis causes demyelination of central nerve fibers, and it is this pathology which results in most of the symptoms of the disease. The repair of the fibers by remyelination has been advanced as a potential symptomatic therapy, but at present the conduction properties of remyelinated central fibers are not well understood. In this study the conduction properties of Schwannian or oligodendrocyte remyelinated central nerve fibers have been determined. In addition, the status of the blood-brain barrier has been examined in lesions characterized by Schwann cell remyelination. These lesions chronically lack astrocytes, a cell believed to be involved in the …

Effects Of Sodium Intake, Furosemide, And Infusion Of Atrial Natriuretic Peptide On The Urinary And Metabolic Clearances Of Arginine Vasopressin In Normal Subjects, Arnold M. Moses, Carol Jones, Carolyn B. Yucha Jan 1990

Yucha

Nursing Faculty Publications

Arginine vasopressin (AVP) and atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) have important influences on water and electrolyte metabolism, and studies on the interactions between these hormones may have important implications. We have investigated the effects of sodium intake, furosemide, and infusion of ANP on the urinary and metabolic (nonurinary) clearances of AVP in hydrated normal subjects. On a high sodium diet there was an increase in urine volume, sodium excretion, osmolal clearance, plasma ANP concentration, and urinary clearance and fractional excretion of AVP, with a decrease in PRA. The infusion of furosemide increased urine volume, sodium excretion, osmolal clearance, and PRA, but …

Cardiovascular, Metabolic, Electromyographic, And Rpe Responses To Isotonic Versus Isokinetic Exercise Performed On The Monark And Fitron Bicycle Ergometers, Patrice Annette Keil Jan 1990

Cardiovascular, Metabolic, Electromyographic, And Rpe Responses To Isotonic Versus Isokinetic Exercise Performed On The Monark And Fitron Bicycle Ergometers, Patrice Annette Keil

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine if any differences exist in relative efficiency of the subjects when riding a Monark bicycle ergometer as compared to a Fitron bicycle ergometer ridden at the same work rate. This efficiency was determined from levels of oxygen consumption, exercise heart rates, ratings of perceived exertion, blood pressure, and electromyographic recordings of four right leg muscles during exercise bouts on the two different bicycle ergometers.

Seventeen apparently healthy male subjects aged 42 to 78 years performed two tests, one on the Monark bicycle ergometer and one on the Fitron bicycle ergometer. Each test …

Role Of Newly Synthesized Steroid Hormone Antagonists In Adrenocortico-Steroid Hormone-Induced Hypertension, Justicia Opoku-Edusei Jan 1990

Role Of Newly Synthesized Steroid Hormone Antagonists In Adrenocortico-Steroid Hormone-Induced Hypertension, Justicia Opoku-Edusei

Theses and Dissertations

Excess adrenocorticosteroid hormones such as glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids is well known to induce hypertension in several animal species as well as in humans. Therefore, the development of potent and specific glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid antagonists with antihypertensive effects is clinically necessary. steroid hormone antagonists being used therapeutically present serious endocrinology side effects such as the widely used antimineralocorticoid, spironolactone. The antiglucocorticoids available so far have been active only in vitro or only weakly in viva. Recently, three new exciting adrenocorticosteroid hormone antagonists have been synthesized. RU 486 is a potent antiglucocorticoid (and antiprogesterone with potential as an abortifacient), RU 26752 and …

The Effect Of Horseback Riding Activity On The Tibialis Anterior, Vastus Lateralis, And Rectus Abdominis Of A Paraplegic, Laurie A. Price Jan 1990

The Effect Of Horseback Riding Activity On The Tibialis Anterior, Vastus Lateralis, And Rectus Abdominis Of A Paraplegic, Laurie A. Price

Masters Theses

Horses are now being used in various programs under various conditions. The use of horses for therapy and recreation for the physically and mentally disabled first began in Germany and Switzerland. The United States now has many schools and different riding programs as well.

Riding seems to be especially beneficial to those with neurological impairments. Treatment of paraplegia is very limited but recreational activities are advancing. The use of the horse is beneficial for paraplegics emotionally as well as physically. Measurements and evaluations of these benefits are lacking. This project analyzes and measures the physical benefits of horseback riding on …

The Accuracy Of A Post-Exercise Heart Rate Determined By Electronic Monitoring And Radial Artery Palpation Following Swimming Exercise, Jonathan Kevin Kessel Jan 1990

The Accuracy Of A Post-Exercise Heart Rate Determined By Electronic Monitoring And Radial Artery Palpation Following Swimming Exercise, Jonathan Kevin Kessel

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate through electronic monitoring whether immediate post-exercise heart rates determined in an erect position are an accurate representation of heart rates achieved during swimming exercises performed in the prone position. In addition, a comparison was made to determine what differences, if any, existed between immediate post-exercise heart rates determined by radial palpation and immediate recovery heart rates determined by electronic monitoring.

Fourteen male and four female members of the Eastern Illinois University Swim Program volunteered to be subjects.

Each of the subjects swam eight lengths of the pool (200 yds.) at approximately 60-70 …

Patterns Of Ionic Currents Around The Developing Oocyte Of The Cockroach, Blattella Germanica., Joseph Kunkel Dec 1989

Patterns Of Ionic Currents Around The Developing Oocyte Of The Cockroach, Blattella Germanica., Joseph Kunkel

Joseph Kunkel

The development of patterns of current around vitellogenic oocytes of the cockroach, Blattella germanica, was examined by means of a two-dimensional vibrating probe. Previtellogenic oocytes exhibited small unstable currents. Shortly after vitellogenic uptake began (oocytes 0.6-0.8 mm anterior to posterior) currents were either all inward or all outward at the plane of measuiement. A dorsoventral pattern of currents was first observed around oocytes a little larger than 0.8 mm. Current exited dorsally (source) and entered ventrally (sink). In these oocytes source and sink were small, less than half the anterior-posterior length. As oocytes grew, relative sizes of source and sink …
